12/02/05 Fourth Birmingham Cross Country League Race - Malvern

The mens team had a mountain to climb to avoid relegation in this fourth and final race in the Birmingham League. Lying in 11th position after race 3, they had to overturn Royal Sutton Coldfield's 75 point lead to get 10th position and be safe. Men's Club Captain, Richard Greenhalf, had done a superb job making sure that the best team available was fielded and fired up with the task in hand. The whistle blew, and they were off. Graham took an early lead with everyone else in hot pursuit. But where were all the Sutton runners? It soon beacame apparant they were all somewhere behind most of the Kenilworth runners.

Julian Simpson led Kenilworth Runners in with a terrific run in 37 minutes and 55 seconds for 18th position. He was followed by Pat Noonan (38.36, 33rd) and Graham Birch (38.45, 36th).

15/01/05 The Warwickshire X-Country Champsionshipsnt>

No less than 33 members of Kenilworth Runners, 12 ladies and 21 men, travelled to Newbold Comyn on Saturday afternoon to take part in the first of the regional cross country championships. As always Newbold Comyn is an ideal venue for a cross country race with plenty of mud, some of it deep, and a steep climb up Beacon Hill on each of the three laps.

As at Droitwich the week before it was the ladies that stole the show with a very impressive performance to give them second place, and silver medal position, in the team event. Ruth Barnes finished in 4th position overall. So good was her run that she has been chosen to run for the County in the Inter Counties Championships at Nottingham, soon! Rebecca Kendall, Karen Hallas and Catherine Wilson all finished in the first 16 which is some performance given the quality of the field. Kenilworth Runners men also performed very well with the 'A' team of Julian Simpson, Pat Noonan, Graham Birch, Mick Williams, Wayne Oakes and Roger Homes finishing in 5th position with Julian Simpson gaining 20th position overall. 08/01/05 The final Gloucester X-country race>

On Saturday ten members of Kenilworth Runners, 3 ladies and 7 men, travelled to Droitwich to take part in the final event of this four race series. The four events have been held over varying courses in different parts of the Midlands and all have been very challenging and always face the runner with new obstacles.

This race, 10 kilometres for men and 7 for the ladies, was held in the picturesque park adjacent to the race headquarters in Droitwich High School. With plenty of twists and turns the course offered those type of obstacles so beloved by cross country runners together with a wide variety of mud conditions elsewhere. Two deep ditches had to be crossed three times and a steep bank, also three times, covered in mud made for a desperate scramble to avoid slipping back to the bottom. All in all a splendid course well marshalled by the organisers.

On a day when the weather was ideal for cross country running it was the ladies team, of Rebecca Kendall, Catherine Wilson and Pauline Dable, who eclipsed their male compatriots by coming in second position on the day out of a total of 6 teams.

Their male counterpart's failed to live up to the standard the ladies set and languished in 9th position out of 9 teams! On the bright side Mick Morris was unofficially advised that he had won the over 70 prize for the second year running.

In the Under 13 boys race Kenilworth Runners P. McCorquodale ran his race in 10 minutes and 5 seconds to finish in the impressive position of 12th place out of 32 finishers.

11/12/04 Cheltenham, Gloucester League Race 3

10 members of Kenilworth Runners made the journey to Cheltenham for the third race of the Gloucestershire Cross Country League which was held in the pleasant surroundings of Pittville Park.

In bright but cold conditions, the 3 Kenilworth ladies, 3 counting in scoring the team, completed their two lap 4 mile course. A little later they were followed by the 7 Kenilworth men in their 3 lap 6 mile race, 6 of whom made up the scoring team. First home for the ladies was Pauline Dable with a superb run to finish in 33 minutes. Jane Pithie was the next Kenilworth lady runner to finish in 33.30, followed by the third counter for the ladies team, Kristy Dable (40.09).

In the men's race, Steve Jackson led the Kenilworth team home with a blistering run to finish in 38 minutes 9 seconds followed by Richard Greenhalf (42.53). Next home for the team was Steff Shillington (45.27). 71 year old Mick Morris (50.03) followed shortly after with Colin Bricher coming close behind in 50.32. Richard Elliott and Martin Smith also ran but their times are not available at this time..

The final race of this league takes place at Droitwich on 8th January 2004

04/12/04 Midland 7- Newbold Comyn

On Saturday afternoon nine Kenilworth Runners, consisting of 5 ladies and 4 men, lined up to take part in the Midlands 7 (4 for the ladies). The event also included the Midlands Intercounty Championships.

On the day it was Kenilworth's ladies who took pride of place with a truly superb show of running with Lucy Aphramor (winner of this years Kenilworth Runners Hilly Challenge in the Abbey Fields) the second lady to finish, followed by Rebecca Kendall who also had a superb run to finish in 6th position overall, and Pauline Dable who finished 3rd over 50 lady. Sandie Pearman and Kristy Dable also had good runs but their positions are not available at this time. Given the strength of the field this was an incredible performance by Kenilworth's ladies and bodes very well for the future.

As a result of their runs on Saturday two of Kenilworth's ladies, Lucy Aphramor and Rebecca Kendall, have been nominated to run for Warwickshire who won the team race in the incorporated County Championships.

Kenilworth Men's team had a steady performance with Richard Greenhalf leading them in with an excellent run to finish in 57 minutes and 12 seconds, he was followed by Steff Shillington (58.47), Mick Morris (63.48) and Colin Bricher (65.13).

Competition in the 2nd Division of this excellent cross country league is very tough but the 15 Kenilworth Runners who ran at Keresley Park last Saturday were ready for the challenge. This was the second of four races over a 10 kilometre course which was both flat and fast with the whole event brilliantly organised by Northbrook Running Club.

Kenilworth Runners gave of their best with Martin Dorrill leading them in with an exceptional run in 40 minutes 42 seconds to achieve 59th place. He was closely followed by Mick Williams who gave yet another superb performance to finish in 41 minutes 49 seconds in 76th place. 30/10/04 Reebok Challenge incorporating the 1st B'ham league race

'So far I only have provisional results for the race. The Division 2 men made a solid start at Sennelys Park, and are comfortably sitting in 8th position after race 1. Pat Noonan had an excellent run, followed by Martin then Wayne. Both the A and B teams performed well in the mud (!!) and made a good start in this tough league. Now the men hope to build on this on the next 3 fixtures and stay in this divison for a further year! . The B team are lying in 7th position also.

In the womens race Ruth Barnes had a great run to lead the Kenilworth ladies home. Although the mud was a challenge everyone enjoyed the race!

More results when I get them....

02/10/04 4 Stage Midlands Cross Country Championships

Ten members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Brooksby College near Leicester on Saturday to take part in the first of the seasons cross country races. This race was a relay where the men fielded teams of four runners each runner completing a 6 kilometre two lap course which took them over some of the most pleasant countryside in the midlands. The ladies teams were made up of three runners each and the team each completed three laps.

The day was generally mild and dry with the exception of the start of the first race of the day when the heavens opened and thoroughly wet the group of runners preparing or their stage of the race.

The three Kenilworth teams were lead out in the first stage by Rebecca Kendall, Julian Simpson and Mick Morris who had the honour of the soaking at the start. The ladies team could only field two runners both of whom had superb runs that, had they had a third runner, would probably have put them in among the prizes. The members times were as follows:-
