17/03/01: Race 4 Birmingham League - Alexander Stadium

The Runners ended this years cross country campaign with a solid performance at Alexander Stadium. Originally it was intended to run the race on Malvern Common in the shadows of the Malvern Hills but was transferred to Birmingham due to the outbreak of foot and mouth.

Nonetheless the Alexander Stadium Park is a fine setting for a cross-country race with plenty of variations to make an interesting and challenging course with plenty of mud. There were three equal laps of a total of 9.5 kilometres. The day was cold but pleasant and ideal for the last race of the four event series, the race that would establish final league positions. With six team members to count Kenilworth Runners finished in sixth position, comfortably in the middle of division three with no fears of relegation. Wayne Oakes lead the team in with a splendid run finishing in 11th position in 35.19 minutes. Mick Williams was next in 21st position (36.00 minutes) confirming the excellent form he is in. They were followed by Simon Vine (31st; 36.46 min), Martin Dorrill (44th; 37.17 min), Richard Steel (51st; 37.48 min) followed by the sixth team member Roger Holmes (57th; 38.07 min). Other members who ran were John McNally (108th; 44.38), Stef Shillington (124th 46.46) and Mick Morris (130th; 50.34).

03/02/2001: Race 4 Gloucester League - Leamington Spa

On Saturday seven club members took part in the last of the Gloucester League Cross Country Races at Newbold Comyn. The course was very muddy and presented a tough challenge. Pauline Dable represented the club in the two lap (4 miles) ladies race and completed in a commendable 33.39 minutes. In the three lap (6 mile) mens race, Simon Vine lead the men in with a sparkling run of 38.38 minutes. He was followed by Richard Elliott (39.42), Richard Steele (40.18), Tom Dable (43.43) and Stef Shillington (48.51).

27/01/2001: Midlands Championships - Nottingham

Four Club Members travelled to Nottingham on Saturday to take part in the Midland Cross Country Championships. A large contingent of runners from clubs throughout the Midlands took part in this 12 kilometre (7.45 miles) race in the attractive grounds of Wollaton Park an ideal venue for this race with a varied terrain. The course was well set out starting with a short lap and then three laps, each getting longer. The going was firm with only two muddy parts and with the day cold and bright it was cross country at its best. The Kenilworth contingent were led in by Martin Dorrill who completed in a superb time of 45.08 minutes, followed by Roger Homes in a steady 48.22, Stef Shillington was next in 60.06 minutes with Mick Morris just behind in 64.10 minutes.

13/01/2001: Race 3 Birmingham League - Sparkhill

On Saturday 14 runners took part in the third of the Birmingham League Cross Country Race series at Fox Hollies Park, Birmingham. The day was superb, bright and dry and whilst the course appeared firm in fact the going was soft with several very boggy sections in particular on the steep climb in each of the 4 equal laps that made up this 6.5 mile course. Mick Williams led the runners in with a splendid run of 40.50 minutes putting him well up the finishing order in 18th place. He was followed closely by Wayne Oakes (41.50-28), Simon Vine (41.55-30), Martin Dorrill (41.36-31), Richard Steel (43.30-48), Richard Elliott (44.28-63), Matthew Kingston-Lee (45.24-77), Steve Jones (46.39-85), John McNally (48.07-100), Ray Wilson (48.07-101), Ian Gregory (53.30-126), Stef Shillington (53.55-128), John Jones (56.00-135) and Mick Morris (56.24-138). After the third round the Runners are lying comfortably in 7th position having finished 6th on the day. Sphinx are just ahead of them so it could make for a very interesting final race over at Worcester.

06/01/2001: Warwickshire Cross Country Championships

On Saturday eight runners went to the Alexander Stadium Birmingham to take part in the 11th Annual Warwickshire Cross Country Championships. This 9.5 kilometre (5.9 mile) course comprised of three laps of 3 kilometres each plus a small lap of half a kilometre. The going was generally firm with only a few boggy sections. In an exciting battle Martin Dorrill finished just ahead of Mick Williams with a time of 36.24, Mick coming in only 5 seconds later in 36.29, confirming that both are in splendid form. Simon Vine was close behind with a time of 37.59 just ahead of the ever improving Roger Holmes who clocked 38.19. Roland Smythe recorded 40.40, followed by Ray Wilson 43.00, Stef Shillington 47.34 and Mick Morris 49.50.

09/12/2000: Race 3 Gloucester League, Pittville Park, Cheltenham

On Saturday 5 runners were on the start line at Pittville Park Cheltenham for the three lap 9.1 Kilometre cross country race. The course was undulating rather than hilly with plenty of variation and a water obstacle to tackle. In all a very pleasant venue. Kenilworth Runners acquitted themselves well being lead in by Simon Vine in a splendid time of 38.23 minutes, he was followed by John McNally in 42.52, with Tom Dable in 43.01, a resurgent Stef Shillington in 47.01 and Mick Morris in 49.41 who managed to get an early bath in the stream on the first lap!

02/12/2000: Race 2 Birmingham League, Newcastle under Lyme

Saturday 14 Runners travelled to Newcastle under Lyne to take part in the second race of the Birmingham & District Invitation Cross Country League. This event brought together all the teams in Division 3 of the league where Kenilworth Runners compete and currently occupy 9th place out of a total of 13 teams. On the day Kenilworth took 6th place. The race took place in Westbury Park which overlooks the M6 motorway. The course was 5.5 miles long, with long sections of thick mud and so provided a very tough challenge. The course was divided into 4 laps with an "easy" short first leg followed by 3 tough laps which included a steep climb and a boggy downhill. However the view from the top was stimulating! Kenilworth Runners acquitted themselves well with Mick Williams taking 16th position overall which was a splendid effort against very strong opposition, Martin Dorill was next Runner to finish in a creditable 29th position, followed by Wayne Oaks (37), Richard Elliott (41), Richard Steele (62), Luigi Frondella (64), Matthew Kingston-Lee (71), Simon Vine (93), Terry Dyer (110), Ray Wilson (120), Steve Jones(126), Ian Gregory (134), Steff Shillington (144) and Mick Morris (148).

18/11/2000: Race 2 Gloucester League - Plock Court, Gloucester

On Saturday nine members of the club ran the second race of the Gloucester League at Plock Park, Gloucester. Despite the recent heavy rains the course was easy with only one waterlogged part. However due to the weather the distance was reduced to about 4.5 miles. Kenilworth Runners were lead in by Richard Elliot with a fine run of 30.29 minutes. He was closely followed by Richard Steele (30.49), Roland Smythe (32.56), John McNally (33.04), Ray Wilson (34.00), Tom Dable (34.54), Jason Wilson (37.00), Stef Shillington (37.50) and Mick Morris (39.55).

04/11/2000: Race 1 Birmingham League - Kicks off at Senneleys Park

Kenilworth Runners fielded 14 runners in the first Birmingham league cross country race at Senneleys Park, Birmingham. The 10 kilometre race at Senneleys Park involved all age groups, male and female, with ages ranges from under 13's to senior runners. Teams from all four divisions of the league took part which meant that the competition was fierce. The mud on the four lap course was sticky and in places difficult to negotiate which together with the six water obstacles made the race a tough challenge. Nonetheless Wayne Oakes lead the team in with an excellent run in 42.25 minutes, followed closely by Mick Williams (43.13), Martin Dorrill (44.18), Roger Holmes (44.35), Richard Elliot (44.40), Lou Frondella (45.14), Richard Steel (45.36), Roland Smythe (48.26), John McNally (49.56), Ray Wilson (50.30), Steve Jones (51.34), Ian Gregory (53.50), Richard Greenhalf (54.31) and Mick Morris (61.02). The other vital component of the day, the mini bus, had a faultless first lap to Birmingham but on the return leg to Kenilworth joined the spirit of Guy Faulkes day and backfired its way into the Town. However the skill of driver Ray Wilson coaxed the bus back over the last few miles thus ending a satisfying day

21/10/2000: Race 1 Gloucester League - Kenilworth make it to Dursley....just in the nick of time!

On Saturday the men's team set off for Dursley to take part in the Gloucestershire Cross Country League. Showing resolve, their mini bus breaking down on the M40, they returned to Kenilworth to organise alternative transport. Arriving just in time for the race was just the thing to get adrenaline pumping. A demanding course of three laps produced some gritty running. Stef Shillington (55 min) put some serious space between himself, Kerry Waine (57 min) and Mick Morris (58.40 min), who both finished in front of him last season. "Well Done!" Wayne Oakes, still rampant, took 12th place (41 min) followed by Mick Williams (41.40 min) Richard Elliott (42.57 min) Richard Steel (44.17 min) Roland Smythe (47.26 min) Ray Wilson (51.10 min) Ian Gregory (51.42 min) and Gerry Lewis (53.12 min).

07/10/2000: Midlands Cross Country Relays

It's here at last! The new Cross Country season kicked off today at 2pm, in traditional wet muddy and dull conditions. In contrast with the weather, the mood was bright, perhaps a little pensive with four miles and two strength sapping laps for each to consider, but nonetheless, race days are always fun days! As usual, the two lap course at Newbold provided it's unique blend of furrowed fields and boggy river banks, plus the sickeningly steep climb to the summit of the Beacon. A field of sixty men's and twenty woman's teams, including the likes of Birchfield Harriers and Coventry Godiva took to the start line. Roger Holmes for the "A" team had a great first leg, putting them in 38th position, followed by Richard Steel for the "B" team, just 17 seconds behind in 39th. Probably our most determined runner (Mick Williams) for the "A" was almost caught by Richard Elliott "B" on the line, with barely 1 second between them. This strongly contended leg really improved their positions, they were now in 29th and 30th respectively. Luigi Frondella took the "A" into 27th place with a typically strong run, but Roland Smythe "B" couldn't quite stay in touch and finished in 35th. Anchor Man for the "A" Waine Oakes, had a blistering run, (26min 06 secs) overtaking six quality runners to put his team in a respectable 21st place overall. Simon Vine "B" pulled back a few places too, which rewarded the "B" with 32nd place overall. Kenilworth "C" comprising of Gerry Lewis, Andy Biss, Kerry Waine and Mick Morris showed the usual grit and determination we have come to expect, finishing in a combined time of 2hrs 15mins 06secs.
