2012 Club League Race Report - Race 3: Cap'n Phil's Hilly 100 Warmup

There was an overwhelming sense of gratitude at the end of this season’s longest Club Race, Cap’n Phil’s Hilly 100 Warmup, which saw runners in the lanes around Henley and Lowsonford for the second time this year.

Firstly, everyone was grateful that the weather was significantly kinder than for the preceding Sunday’s combined Stratford half-marathon/half-marathon event. On top of this, it seemed that runners were also very grateful to Cap’n Phil for setting a testing Hilly 100 warmup course. Almost the entire field could be heard to exclaim ‘thank Phil for that!’ as they crossed the finish line.

The larger than usual gathering of marshals might have aroused the suspicions of the less generous souls in the field, but generally all of those helping on the day were a model of restraint, keeping their sly chuckles, raised eyebrows and ‘rather them than me’ type comments to themselves.

Only one diplomatic near-miss occurred on the day, after raceday marshal Martin Dorrill was heard to say that the course ‘could have been much harder’ within earshot of the field. Most were prepared to let the comment go, but seasoned observers would have seen that famous ‘flash of steel’ appear in Nick Benbow’s eyes, and would have known that trouble was in the offing. However, the swift action of Jon ‘you can call me John’ Mettyear averted danger. His knowledge of what makes Nick tick was invaluable: Once told that there were ‘cakes available somewhere nearby’, a becalmed Nick strode off with his mind fully focused on the possibilities of getting hold of a chocolate éclair, jam doughnut or cream horn.

Whatever the reasons for their increased numbers, the help of the Marshals meant that all ran smoothly on the day, and my thanks go to Helen Neal and Liz Hegan, both of whom ended up walking most of the course to help with repointing arrows and generally preventing people from heading in the wrong direction, Glyn Clarke, who manned the lone 5-mile outpost near Preston Bagot, Dave Ramus, Clive Pearce and Martin Dorrill (the Lowsonford team) and Keith Blake and Gary Dilnot who provided help and encouragement to runners at the finish.

Course photographers Rod Goodwin, Colin Underhill and Helen Neal are loading some outstanding shots onto Facebook, and my thanks to them for their efforts. Most of the photos are very impressive, however one shot of Chairman Pete does add a certain irony to his comment that the modelling shots on the club kit page of the website ‘aren’t very easy on the eye’.

Finally, special thanks also to Pete Matthews for his role as cycle sweeper and to Phil Gould for setting up and running the water station.

As for the results, unfortunately one person was missing from the first published version of results, and once this was corrected, the missing runner: Liam Chapple, proved to be the winner. Apologies for this error on the first version.

Despite taking nearly 2 minutes off her predicted time, and thereby showing signs of hitting form at the right time for the Hilly 100, Ros Matthews just missed out on top place in the field to Liam. Gwyn Davies and Matt Kingston-Lee were 3rd and 4th: both looked very strong on the finishing hill and appeared to find the course to their liking.

It was good to see Andy Holbrook and Sean Mitchell at their first race of the Club League season, and they both played their jokers on the day. Andy picked up 8th place as the result of a slight improvement on his predicted time, and secured a healthy 88 points. Sean was lower down the results list, but opened his points tally with a handy 68 points.

Full (corrected) results are here: Race 3 Race results

(NB: The version of the results sent to Phil prior to Hilly 100 team selection did include Liam and reported his, and all other times, correctly).

The 'ever presents' for the first 3 races are heading the field in the League standings, with Glyn Clarke now the overall leader. Rich Steel leads Group C, Sally Hicks Group B and Liz Hegan Group A.

Current League Standings (revised following correction to results) are here: League Standings after Race 3

As for the race ‘guests’ list, I don’t yet have registration details for several new members, so these appear as guests for now. Once I have the details I’ll make sure this race is taken into account as the first of the 2 you need to run before you can start gaining points.

Once again, we welcomed a couple of Warwick Wasps members to the race, including past attendee Jayne Mumford. Prominent local runner Gavin Davies and his Centurion colleague, Marc Curtis also added to the numbers. I’m sure Gavin enjoyed leading the field home, and we look forward to welcoming all guests back at future races. Guest/New Member results are here: Race 3 Guest results

Honiley Hoof results

Full report:

Whilst they took place in the same calendar month, the conditions for the first and second Club races of the 2012 season were very different.

The runners who gathered for the Honiley Hoof basked in glorious Spring sunshine, and the only concern for most runners in the pre-race build up was whether Ray Bans or Reactolite Rapides were this year’s ‘must-have’ eyewear for the discerning club runner. Only those who had endured the Preston Bagot deluge in Race 1  failed to share the general mood of optimism, and could be recognised by their reluctance to part with their fleeces and occasional nervous glances at the sky.

The relatively short course distance over a mostly flat course presented an opportunity for those in good form to make a big dent in their predicted time, and Aidan Keher led the way, just shading Paddy Roddy. Both improved on their predicted times by over 7%. Paddy also took the Course record, adding further to his points tally for the race.

As expected from the predicted times, the field generally came together at the end of the race. Steve Payne and Aidan were first over the line, with Steve’s generally relaxed approach along the finishing straight and comedy-style crossing of the finish line (spectators were in agreement that Norman Wisdom was the probable inspiration) cementing his place in the B group when he returns for his first scoring race. Both Steve and Richard Miller were heading straight off to the Sport Relief Mile afterwards, so their attendance at the Club race was an excellent show of commitment.

Glyn Clarke and Liz Hegan both made good use of their jokers by improving on their predicted times, with Glyn securing third place on the day, and Liz again looking to be well placed for a high A group finish at the end of the season to follow on from her 3rd place in last year’s final league standings.

We welcomed 2 guests to the Club Race: Sam Moffatt’s son Harry and Chris Hart’s wife Michelle. Sam achieved a time of 26.53 and Michelle 34.06. Hopefully they’ll be back for future Club races. It was great to see that regular Club Race guest Jimmy Atkins is now a Club member: a strong addition to the C group.

A total of 7 spot prizes were awarded after the race, with Mike Crust taking home the lavish top prize, awarded to 26th runner over the line on the day.

Finally, many thanks to the marshals for their invaluable help with the race: Gary Dilnot, Mandy Crust and Sally Hicks.

(The league standings sheet will follow shortly, once jokers from the first race, and marshals from the second, have been added to the points tally).

Club League - Race 1: Preston Bagot Bash Print E-mail

A heroic effort from 25 runners and 5 marshals saw the 2012 Club Race season get off to a testing start on a cold and wet day in Lowsonford.

The challenging weather conditions made it one of those days where it feels like everyone in attendance deserves double points towards their Club League tally, particularly the marshals, and on that note, I’d like to heartily thank Sam Calder, Anton Raath, Rod Goodwin and Mick Williams for their commitment to the cause – their help was invaluable on the day.

The figure-of-eight course takes the runners out from Lowsonford towards Preston Bagot, via an ‘unmade road’, complete with its own ford. Conditions on the day made this part of the course, which runners see twice, more like something you’d usually expect to see in a Cross Country race. A few additional impromptu fords appeared in some of the on-road sections to add to the fun.

Before the race, it was interesting to see the contrast in approaches to the pre-race muster in cold, wet conditions. The contrast being that Clive stood around for 20 minutes in his vest and shorts, whilst everyone else stayed layered-up until the last possible moment. As the final group set off, discarding their garments for safekeeping, the race starter was left looking like a mobile jumble sale.

Understandably, there was little appetite for lingering around afterwards, so most people were unaware of Phil Fusi’s very realistic post-race simulation of the onset of hypothermia. His efforts were rewarded with some generous hospitality from Tom and Pauline: Once warmed up, fed and watered chez Dable, Phil's ‘recovery’ was complete.

As for the results, only one runner was able to match their predicted time for the day, and was deservedly awarded top spot and 50points - congratulations to Rich Steel who bettered his predicted time by 4 seconds. Choosing to play his joker doubled his tally and gave him 100 points to start the season off. Of the other jokers played, Clive, Sally, and Aidan all took top spots in their groups, with Tom securing second spot in the B's.

Second spot in the results list went to Mike Crust as he looks to complete as many races as possible this year having spent much of last seasons club league on the sidelines as a regular marshall and supporter. Glyn Clarke completes the podium for the first race who despite not being able to match his predicted time, was less than a minute away from it.

Congratulations must also go to Imogen Peace and Sarah Stein, both of whom managed to break the course records for their respective age categories. Well done Ladies!
