06/02/2010 Coventry Parkrun, Coventry War Memorial Park

Saturday saw the inaugural Coventry Funrun at the War Memorial Park. The grass roots initiative allows runners of all ability to take part in a weekly 5km time trial each Saturday at 9am. It's free to take part, but runners must register beforehand. The first running of the event proved a success with 101 finishers, albeit on a course that turned out to be a little short of 5 km (The organisers have promised to adjust and remeasure the course for future events). Kenilworth Runners had four members taking part: Pete Bryan 17:19; Mick Williams 17:41; Matthew Elkington 19:53; Barry Elkington 20:38.
Early indications are that these Parkruns, supported by England Athletics, are proving very popular. To register your interest in the Coventry Parkrun, visit the Coventry Parkrun website.
07/02/2010 Watford Half Marathon, Watford

Two members of Kenilworth Runners headed to Hertfordshire to take part in the Watford Half Marathon. With the race declared full having received 2500 entries, the event has established itself as one of the most popular winter Half Marathons. New for 2010 was chip timing and Gatorade at the drinks stations. The course is surprisingly rural given its start point in the heart of Watford and is relentlessly undulating, with some steep hills scattered in for good measure. As the second half of the race is predominantly downhill however, fast times are possible for those who save some reserves for the latter stages.
Conditions were nearly ideal for racing, if a touch on the cold side - cloudy but dry and only a gentle breeze. Matthew Kingston-Lee kicked off his 2010 road running campaign in style with an excellent run, finishing twentieth overall in a time of 1:17:19, taking over a minute off his previous personal best. He was followed home by Mark Hall, who didn't particularly enjoy the hills and came home a handful of minutes outside his best time. Nevertheless, 1:37:09 saw Mark finish in an excellent 385th place.

20/02/2010 Wedgnock Winter Hills & Spills, Rd 4, Ilmington
Richard Simkiss was crowned in style as champion of the Wedgnock Winter Hills & Spills series after winning the fourth and final race on an extremely hilly snow covered course, which took in the grounds of the magnificent Foxcote Hall. The course was significantly revised following the snowfall and the distance was reduced from 10km to 9.23km, but this did not detract from the severity of the challenge.
Richard was particularly pleased with his time of 36:15 as he beat Toby Spencer of Solihull & Small Heath, who had beaten him in the previous week's cross country at Malvern. Richard was dominant in the four race series having won the final three races after a second placed finish in the series opener. Two other club members took part in the race: Tom Dable finished in 53:25 and was first V60; Pauline Dable finished in 64:02 and was first V55.
21/02/2010 Wyre Forest Multi Terrain 8
Three members of Kenilworth Runners took part in the Wyre Forest Multi Terrain 8. The off road course comprised of tracks and paths in the heart of the Wyre Forest and actually covered 8.42 miles despite the title of the race suggesting otherwise. This is following a revised route necessitated by a bridge being destroyed in the 2007 floods.
Lucy Aphramor made light work of the snow covered and muddy course to finish first in the women's race. (61:12) This is the fourth time Lucy has won this challenging event, having savoured the sweet taste of success in 2003, 2005 and 2009. She was joined at the finish by Tom Dable (72:14), Pauline Dable (84:35 and 1st VF60).
