14/06/2009 Corn Dolly Challenge

Tom and Pauline Dable took part in the Corn Dolly Challenge, an 8.2 mile circular route from Hickling (on the Leicestershire / Nottinghamshire border) to Long Clawsdon and back. A fairly flat course with with a few inclines and the last three miles on canal towpath, the race was run in conjunction with the Hickling annual Country Fayre and attracted 100 plus runners on what was a very hot day. Runners received a welcome cup of tea and a huge piece of homemade cake instead of the usual medal. Post race entertainment included displays from the Quorn Hunt Beagles, Vintage cars, tractors & bicycles, birds of prey and a gymnastic display as well as a dog show and the usual stalls and side shows.

With all that on offer it is a small miracle Tom and Pauline found time to run. But they did and both ran well, with Tom finishing in 1:02:10 and Pauline in 1:13:04.

25/06/2009 Hampton Lucy Luker - Summer League

47 Members and visitors found this course very demanding with a full mile of up hill at 2 miles, not that the hills finish there as the remainder of the course was very undulating.

Roger Wilkes race organiser was caught out by the popularity of this race underestimating the numbers for the super after the race, hopefully all went away happy having had at least a sandwich and a few chips on what was considered a good evening for the club.

David Brown recorded the fastest predicted time so taking home the box of chocolates for this, Tom Dable remains the overall leader as do the tables remaining the same as the previous race with only minor place changes.

28/06/2009 Mansfield - Half Marathon

New Men's Team Captain Phil Gould headed to the Mansfield Half Marathon in fine form and with hopes of securing a PB and a time of around 1:18. A midsummer half marathon though is often a trial of runner vs the weather and this race proved no exception with warm humid conditions making the semi-rural hilly course all the tougher. Phil went through 10 miles spot on his target time (60:02) but he faded slightly in the final three miles as the hills continued relentlessly. Nevertheless Phil finished in an excellent 21st position, agonisingly close to breaking 1:20 and his existing PB as he came home in 1:20:02
