12 members of Kenilworth Runners, including two lady members, travelled to North Wales to compete in two, a 10 kilometre and 14 mile race, of the toughest races in the calendar. To make things even harder the 14 mile event has been extended by half a mile this year. Both races follow a similar course with the longer event ending at the terminal station of the Talyllyn Railway, Abergynolwyn, where the prime objective is to beat the Train into the station.
Starting at Talyllyn Station the course broadly follows the rail line and spectators who travel on the train to meet the runners at the end can often see them struggling through some daunting countryside. The course involves a mixture of public roads, lanes, un-metalled roads, tracks, agricultural land, and rough grazing pastures in very rough terrain, going up and down steep mountainsides.
The wet, cold and windy conditions made the race very hard. However despite these difficulties four member of Kenilworth Runners managed to beat the train into Abergynolwyn Station, which arrived in 107.58 minutes to complete the journey.

University Challenge - Summer League
The last race of this years splendid eight race series attracted no less than 28 members of Kenilworth Runners and their guests. The prospect of some competitive racing and a tight finish on a tough course was one that could not be missed. They were not disappointed with a new overall leader and two course records broken.
The race course starts and finishes outside the Varsity Public House in Westwood Heath. Leaving Gibbet Hill Road a left turn took the runners into Westwood Heath Road and up a steady drag to met the left turn into Crackley Lane. After a fairly flat section the first steep climb occurs by Roughknowles Wood. Turning left into Cryfield Grange Road a little relief was provided by the steady drop past the Farm and up a vicious climb which took them onto the A 429, Coventry Road. A further climb to the traffic lights and a left turn into Gibbet Hill Road took the runners past the University to the finish outside the Varsity.
Richard Green who was second overall after the last race had a superb run to finish in 32 minutes and 33 seconds to take the series title with 290 points. Sue Taylor also sped around this hilly course in 34 minutes and 45 seconds to break the lady veterans course record. Mick Johnson, who last year won the Leicester Marathon, showed that he is in great form and broke the course record to finish in 27 minutes and 30 seconds.

This years series of races has probably been the most successful and competitive ever with plenty of course records falling. Each event has been followed by a buffet in a local hostelry which has added to the pleasure of the races all of which was organised by Club Chairman and Race Organiser, Roger Wilkes.
