Silverstone 10Km - East Mids Grand Prix
No sooner has the winter cross country season ended than it is time to start the summer road races. This is by tradition started by the two lap 10 kilometre race at Silverstone Motor Circuit in Northamptonshire and four members of Kenilworth Runners travelled there on a cool Tuesday evening to join nearly a thousand other athletes. The course comprises two laps of the motor circuit and is generally flat but with some deceptively hard climbs near the end of each circuit.
Matthew Kingstone Lee lead the Kenilworth contingent with a superb run to finish in 49th position in the time of 37 minutes and 10 seconds. He was followed by Peter Bryan, men over 40, (71st, 37.48), Andrew Holbrook, senior men, (132nd, 39.50) and Tom Dable, men over 55, (410th, 46.14). There were 924 finishers.

The course followed the lane until arriving back in Glass House Lane. The course is completed by Farmer Ward Road, Leyes Lane and then down Windy Harbour to the finish.

The Prague Marathon
Kenilworth Runners, Martin Lambert, travelled to Prague to take part in one of the top international marathons. Together with several thousand other athletes from many countries he tackled this tough race that passes through the City of Prague and past many famous sites, not to mention several miles of cobble stones!
Despite the very hot day and under clear blue skies, not the conditions most runners want when tackling this daunting distance, Martin clocked a personal best of 3 hours 52 minutes and 22 seconds to return home feeling that he had achieved a major running target which has given him great personal satisfaction.

Cotswold Hilly 100
30 athletes from Kenilworth Runners, and their supporters, travelled to the Cotswolds to take part in this daunting event. Each member was allocated a 10 mile section to run with a team of ten completing the 100 miles of this gruelling event.
The start and finish is in Stratford upon Avon and the course takes in some of the loveliest villages and countryside to be found in England. Having left Stratford upon Avon the first lap ends near Mickleton, then the runners pass through the villages or towns of Chipping Camden, Snowshill, Brockhampton, Chedworth, Northleach, Bourton on the Water, Moreton in Marsh, Illmington and back to the finish at Stratford upon Avon. Each lap offers a tough challenge to the runner and to coordinate and finish this race is a tough logistical acheivement as well.
After many years of trying it is very pleasing to report that this year Kenilworth Runners ’A’ team won the overall event with a splendid combined time of 10 hours 24 minutes and 31 seconds, taking the best times in no less than 7 of the 10 laps. The ’B’ and ’C’ teams both had excellent runs and the day ended in triumph for Kenilworth Runners.

The Windermere Marathon
Charlotte Beckford, one of Kenilworth Runners recent members, bravely tackled a daunting Marathon set in the beautiful scenery of the English Lake District, in aid of the Marie Curie Charity and could not have chosen a tougher course for her most worthy endeavour. Quite correctly described by the organisers, The Brathay Hall Trust, as the most scenic course in England, Charlotte started with over 1,400 other brave athletes on what is 26.2 miles of either up or down in weather conditions that were mild and pleasant.
The race circumnavigates Lake Windermere, the largest in England, in an anti clockwise direction. Starting outside Brathay Hall, near Windermere the course passed through the village of Hawkeshead. The next section took the runners along the narrow road to Newby Bridge. A quick look at the map reveals the true nature of the course with this section heavily marked by black up and down arrows, which were quickly recognised by the runners as steep climbs and descents. At Newby Bridge the, now very tired runners, took the main road back through Bowness-on-Windermere to the finish at Brathay Hall.
Charlotte completed this epic challenge in the superb time of 4 hours 31 minutes and 28 seconds and in 640th position as well as 55th in her category of senior lady. Her magnificent run was rewarded by the £500 she raised for The Marie Curie Trust. A very satisfying day for her and Kenilworth Runners.

Harbury Stroll - Summer League
28 members of Kenilworth Runners met outside the New Inn, Harbury, to take part in the second race of the series.
The 5.25 mile course chosen for the evening started and finished outside The New Inn and was the first time it had been used. It followed the lane leading to the Five Ways road junction and then down the farm track past Chesterton Church and back up the hill past Chesterton Windmill to turn right and then left to the finish at The New Inn. This is a course which has the ‘last laugh’ for the last two miles include the steep climb up to the Windmill and then a long steady drag into Harbury and the finish.
As the result of a superb run in 44 minutes and 40 seconds Sally Hicks is now overall leader with 95 points. Additionally as this was the first time a race has used this course she has the honour of setting the course record for a veteran lady.

Corby 5 - East Mids Grand Prix
Kenilworth Runners, members, Tom Dable and Mick Morris, were surprised to be greeted by clear skies and not a hint of rain when they arrived at East Carlton Countryside Park, near Corby, on Wednesday evening. The pleasant conditions added to the pleasure of Park with its 18th century French Chateau set in acres of the most lovely park land. They were joined in these idyllic surroundings by over 300 other athletes all keen and ready to tackle a very tough 5 mile race.
The course started in the beautiful local stone village of East Carlton but to show the runners that they were in for a tough time the first half mile was up hill past the ancient church. After the initial climb the course flattened before a long and steady downhill through the exquisite village of Middleton before a flat(ish) two mile section. However all runners knew that what goes down must inevitably go up and having rounded a corner the Chateau came into view in the distance standing on an elevation well above the runners. Sure enough the runners faced two steep, taxing, climbs before reaching the finish near the Chateau.
Tom Dable lead the Kenilworth duo with an excellent run to finish in 37 minutes and 21 seconds in 174th position overall and 7th men 55. Mick Morris followed him in 50.08 minutes in 312th overall and 3rd over 70 category.
