04/03/07 The Wyre Forest 8 - Multi Terrain Race

Kenilworth Runner, Steve Jackson, travelled to the lovely Wyre Forest, near Bewdley, in Worcestershire to take part in the annual 8 mile multi terrain race.

After the recent continuous rain the forest course was in an ideal state to hold a challenging cross country race. Starting with a steep, relatively solid under foot, downhill section of about a mile and half, runners turned left alongside the River Severn to be met with ankle deep mud and this continued for the next five miles - even when these tough athletes left the low lying areas and moved on to forest track. The course was difficult all along and the steep ascent of a mile and half up to the finish confirmed this.

Steve had an excellent run to finish in the exalted position of 44th out of 210 finishers in a time of 63 minutes and 10 seconds.

11/03/07 Ashorne Attack Double - Winter League

A sturdy group of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Ashorne to take part in the 6th race of the 8 race Winter club race series.

On a pleasant Sunday morning they tackled the two lap 7.5 mile course that lead out of Ashorne to the cross roads where a right turn took them through Little Morrell and Newbold Pacey back to Ashorne to repeat the first lap.

With only two races left Roger Wilkes is in overall leading position with 291 points but is closely followed by Stef Shillington on 281 points. So everything depends on a good race at the next event which is a 4 mile race starting at Barford near the Grenville Arms at 11 am on Sunday 25th March 2007.

24/03/07 National Veterans Cross Country Championships

Kenilworth Runners member, Richard Elliot, represented Warwickshire in this prestigious cross country race. Chosen for the race as a result of winning the over 55 men’s title at the recent Midlands Veterans Championships, Richard took up the challenge in the National Race where he was up against the best in the country.

On the difficult Berry Hill 8 kilometre cross country course at Mansfield he took the prestigious 3rd place in the over 55 age group with a superb run in 30 minutes and 20 seconds. At the end of an exciting race Richard was a mere 10 seconds behind the winner.

24/03/07 Warwickshire Open Road Race Relays

Kenilworth ladies entered a team in this prestigious event that was held on a nice cool Saturday in the pleasant surroundings of Sutton Park, Birmingham.

Each team consisted of three runners and Charlotte Beckford, Helen Herniman and Sally Hicks made up Kenilworth’s team. Charlotte ran the first lap in the superb time of 20.41 minutes, for the 5 kilometre hilly course, Helen completed the second lap in an excellent 21.45 minutes and Sally followed her on the third lap to finish in a very impressive 19.32 minutes.

As a result of their great runs Kenilworth Runners team finished in 13th position out of 17 top quality ladies teams.

25/03/07 Hemel Hempstead - 20 mile road race

Kenilworth Runners member, Pauline Dable, joined 300 other athletes in this tough and challenging race which many runners use to hone their pace for the forthcoming London Marathon.

This difficult course climbed out of Boxmoor, Hemel Hempstead, passing initially along the canal towards Berkhampstead Common, before reaching Ashridge Manor Estate at the 12 miles mark. The runners returned by way of the picturesque villages of Little Gaddesden and Potten End before descending on to the canal towpath for the final push into Hemel Hempstead.

On a difficult course Pauline had a superb run to finish in 3 hours 30 minutes.

25/03/07 Barford Belter - Winter League

With only one race to go in this highly competitive series of races, part in the penultimate event, a 4 mile race, held on Sunday morning at Barford. The competitors appreciated the ideal weather conditions with the spring atmosphere adding to the pleasure of an excellent course, that was part road and part cross country.

Starting and finishing just inside Wasperton Lane, in Barford, the course took the runners out of the village towards the Banbury Road. After a long one mile climb they soon reached a footpath on the left which took them over some rough terrain past Plestowes Farm and into Hareway Lane. Turning left they headed back into Barford village and past the Church to meet the A429 road and so back to the finish in Wasperton Lane.

With only one race to go and with the competition for the prestigious title of “Overall Leader of the series” at issue, the 7th event became a race between Roger Wilkes, Kenilworth Runners Chairman, and present leader and Stef Shillington, leader of ‘B’ group who was a mere 10 points behind. A good run by either challenger would make all the difference.

In the event Roger just held onto the overall lead with a very determined run but with yet another superb run Stef has closed the gap to a mere 6 points and with one race to go either can be the eventual proud winner of the series title.
