On an ideal day for hard running, cool and overcast with the hint of rain, Kenilworth Runners veteran runner, Mick Morris, and his son, David, and daughter in law, Sylvia from China, travelled to the picturesque Staffordshire town of Leek to join 342 other athletes in one of the tougher half marathons which includes 13.1 miles of running with 1,220 feet of climbing.
Starting in Leek at Brough Park the course descended rapidly for about three quarters of a mile until heading along a lane with two vicious climbs to the village of Meerbrook. Here a right turn to them by Tittesworth Reservoir before climbing steadily to the Buxton road.
The course proceeded along this road until it reached the village of Upper Hulme where the real effort started with the long and steep climb up to a group of rocks called ’Five Clouds’. Passing along past the Roaches even the tiredest runner could not but be inspired by the stunning views which presented themselves between 6 and 8 miles.
The next few miles were downhill along pleasant little lanes past Meerbrook at 10 miles and so back to the finish in Brough Park.
However as the organisers describe as ’cruel’ the last three quarters of a mile are up the steep climb mentioned earlier which taxed tired legs.
David Morris lead the threesome in with a great run to finish in 91 minutes and 12 seconds in 7th veterans place and 47th overall, Sylvia on her first half marathon also had a great run to finish in 99.14 minutes and 6th lady in 103rd position overall with Mick Morris having a calm steady run to finish in 131.22 minutes in 22nd over 60 and 316th position overall.
