20/07/06 University Callenge - Summer League

On a mild and pleasant Thursday evening no less than 38 members of Kenilworth Runners and their guests met outside the Varsity Public House, Kirby Corner, Coventry, to take part in the penultimate race of what has been an excellent and exciting series of races.
The 5 mile route chosen for the 7th race took the runners from Kirby Corner along Westwood Heath Road to turn left into Bockendon Road and so into Crackley Lane where the first challenge appeared in the form of Crackley Hill.
At the top a sharp left turn took the runners down Cryfield Grange Road to confront the second and possibly harder challenge of a steep hill passing Cryfield Grange Farm. A short descent took them to the Coventry Road and left again to the traffic lights at Gibbet Hill Road and so back to the finish at Kirby Corner.
Before the race Club Chairman, Roger Wilkes, had a very determined look particularly when he played his joker (which doubles points for that race) and with an equally determined run on a tough course he leapt into the overall lead with 284 points.
The full 50 points was claimed by Bob Griffith who had a superb run and at the same time also played his joker to get the maximum 100 points.
Such has been the competition in this seasons series that on Thursday three course records were shattered. New member Andrew Siggers broke the Senior men’s time, Mick Williams broke the veterans and Celia Mills beat the lady veterans record. The group positions are as follows:-

22/08/06 Massey Ferguson - Firms 5

On a very pleasant Tuesday evening three members of Kenilworth Runners joined about 50 other athletes at Warwick University Sports Hall to take part in Massey Fergusan’s 5 mile multi terrain challenge.
The two lap course chosen for this race was partly on road and then on the grass tracks that follow the western boundary of the University.
Starting by the Sports Hall the competitors were faced with a climb up the service road which follows the campus buildings until just before Gibbet Hill Road when a sharp left turn took them onto the grassy footpath that follows the University boundary and then through Whitefield Coppice to turn left again and past the Sports Hall and so to repeat this for the second leg with the race finishing on the playing field near the Sports Hall.
Conditions were excellent for this race with temperatures ideal for running and Barry Elkington lead the Kenilworth trio with a splendid run in 35 minutes and 23 seconds.
He was followed by Roger Wilkes in 43.47 minutes and Pam Wilkes in 53.01 minutes.

24/08/06 Old Town Eight - Summer League

A bumper turnout of 40 members of Kenilworth Runners including 4 guests gathered outside the entrance to the Abbey Fields, Kenilworth, to take part in the 8th and final race of this popular series of races.
The 4 mile course was all on the roads of ‘Old Town’. Starting by the entrance the runners proceeded to the traffic lights where they turned left up High Street.
They turned right down Malthouse Lane hill to reach Beehive Hill and turn left to Clinton Lane. They returned to High Street via Castle Hill and turned left at the traffic lights into Fieldgate Lane which they followed to Beehive Hill and a left turn into Malthouse Lane.
At the end of Malthouse lane they turned down Hill Street and followed the road bounding Abbey Fields to reach the finish by the Car Park entrance.
With all categories under challenge the last race was a heady contest with, club chairman and race organiser, Roger Wilkes, deservedly winning the overall award with 296 points.
Mick Morris took the ‘A’ group title with 284 points, Richard Green the ‘B’ group title with 283 points and Philip McCorquodale the ‘C’ group title with 285 points.

27/08/06 Leek Half Marathon

On an ideal day for hard running, cool and overcast with the hint of rain, Kenilworth Runners veteran runner, Mick Morris, and his son, David, and daughter in law, Sylvia from China, travelled to the picturesque Staffordshire town of Leek to join 342 other athletes in one of the tougher half marathons which includes 13.1 miles of running with 1,220 feet of climbing.
Starting in Leek at Brough Park the course descended rapidly for about three quarters of a mile until heading along a lane with two vicious climbs to the village of Meerbrook. Here a right turn to them by Tittesworth Reservoir before climbing steadily to the Buxton road.
The course proceeded along this road until it reached the village of Upper Hulme where the real effort started with the long and steep climb up to a group of rocks called ’Five Clouds’. Passing along past the Roaches even the tiredest runner could not but be inspired by the stunning views which presented themselves between 6 and 8 miles. The next few miles were downhill along pleasant little lanes past Meerbrook at 10 miles and so back to the finish in Brough Park.
However as the organisers describe as ’cruel’ the last three quarters of a mile are up the steep climb mentioned earlier which taxed tired legs.
David Morris lead the threesome in with a great run to finish in 91 minutes and 12 seconds in 7th veterans place and 47th overall, Sylvia on her first half marathon also had a great run to finish in 99.14 minutes and 6th lady in 103rd position overall with Mick Morris having a calm steady run to finish in 131.22 minutes in 22nd over 60 and 316th position overall.
