As in the last race the members were given the choice of one or two laps but only determined Stef Shillington took this option. The 5 mile route chosen for the race took the runners from Kirby Corner along Westwood Heath Road to turn left into Bockendon Road and so into Crackley Lane which it followed until the left turn after Crackley Hill into and down Cryfield Grange Road to the Coventry Road and left again to Gibbet Hill Road and a left turn back to the start at Kirby Corner.
As the result of a superb run Nick Bradbury as taken the overall lead with 289 points with a great run to finish in 34.02 minutes. Matthew Keal played his joker on the day but Stef Shillingtons double lap has put him in lead position in the ‘B’ group.

5/02/06 Charnwood Hill - The Bowline

On Sunday 5 members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Ansty a small town just north of Leicester to take part in the hardest cross country race in the Midlands.
The course is advertised as approximately 12.5 miles as the measurement of such a difficult route over 5 hills is very difficult, with 1,200 feet of climbing. In fact the organisers had a surprise in store for the competitors as the route was changed at its extreme end and so added about half a mile making the total distance a good half marathon, possibly plus, with an extra few feet of climbing for good measure! Starting in the fields behind Martin High School, Ansty, the route the runners took lead them out over a ploughed field through a muddy quagmire, where the unwary who had not tightened their laces well lost a shoe, and into Bradgate Park . Going past the ruins of the ancient Priory the route lead up the steady climb to leave the Park and take a fast descent down Heartbreak Hill and across the golf course.
The next obstacle was the steep ascent of Broombrigs Hill followed by a rapid descent to enter Beacon Hill Country Park and up a long pull to just behind the rocks at the summit. The return took the runners on an extended route along the boundary of the Park, plus a new and unexpected sharp climb to return under Broombrigs Hill to meet Heartbreak Hill again and struggle up its steep climb. The race followed outward route again trying to save shoes from the mud at the exit from Bradgate Park.
The finish as usual; was on Martin High School playing field.
This was a very tough run but much appreciated by the 365 finishers and was excellently organised and marshalled by the Bowline Climbing Club.
Mick Williams lead Kenilworth Runners in with a superb run in 96.25 minutes to finish in 22nd position and win the first prize for the over 45’s.

The other Kenilworth Runners were:-
Stan Alexander (106.57, 68th),
Steve Jackson (112.17, 110),
Bob Griffith (149.24, 338)
Mick Morris (150.45, 340).

12/02/06 Draycote Water 35 - Club Event

Despite a cool drizzle and a steady wind on the back straight 60 runners took up the daunting challenge of running 35 miles around Draycote Water on Sunday morning in Kenilworth Runner's third Ultra distance race.
After the first two races proved such a success the verdict on this years event was that it matched the previous efforts.
The setting for the race in Severn Trent's magnificent reservoir at Draycote near Dunchurch would be hard to better. Standing in pleasant Warwickshire countryside it is a superb venue for any race and for an Ultra it is ideal with excellent road surfaces, few inclines and little traffic to disturb the runners concentration. The course follows the perimeter road that circumnavigates reservoir, a route that became very familiar to the competitors after the 7 laps that made up the 35 miles.
The strong wind whipped up the water surface and filled the sails of the many craft that were on the reservoir to make a most attractive picture, although it is unlikely that many of the competitors noticed this.
Kenilworth Runners Race Organiser, Roger Wilkes, started the runners and after the first lap it became obvious who was going to come out on top with the eventual first three finishers in the men’s event, Matthew Lynas of Thames Hare and Hounds, Colin Gell of Sale Harriers and Paul Harwood of Leamington all together but local runner Paul pushed hard and went on to finish first with Matthew and Colin following in second and third place. Rosalyn Alexander of Carnegie Harriers was the star on the day for she not only took the ladies first prize but also broke the course record in the process! BUT on such a difficult day it was all the runners who were the real winners in the end! Kenilworth Runners are most grateful again to Severn Trent Water who wholeheartedly gave their permission to use their facilities for this race.

12/02/06 Stamford Stagger - Road Race

Determined member of Kenilworth Runners, Nick Bradbury, travelled to Stamford in Lincolnshire to compete in one of the tougher road races in the calendar. This 30 kilometre (18.6 miles) course is challenging, as it seriously undulates throughout and was made all the harder by the constant drizzle and a stiff head wind that faced the runners from the 10 to the 20 kilometre marks. The end taxed what stamina was left for after a gruelling race it concluded with a lap of a muddy school field, making any hope of a last dash effort impossible. The event was well organised and took in many a scenic view of the Lincolnshire countryside. Nick exceeded all his expectations, finishing in 2 hours 22 minutes in 196th place out of 563 completing the course.

25/02/06 National Championships - Parliment Hill

On Saturday twelve members of Kenilworth Runners, two ladies and ten men, travelled down the M1 eager to compete in the most prestigious cross country race of the season. The English National Cross Country Championships attract runners from clubs throughout the Country to compete in the ultimate cross country event of the year. This year the venue was Parliament Hill Fields in North London a huge expanse of rolling open ground which forms part of Hampstead Heath. Events for all age groups take place from the morning until late afternoon and the ages range from 14 years to some over 70 runners!
The weather on the day was good for cross country running with bright sunny conditions but with a waspish cold easterly wind blowing across the course. However the wind proved of some advantage as it was behind runners up all the short climbs.
The senior and veteran ladies ran an 8 kilometre (4.97 miles with one lap of the course) whilst the senior and veteran men ran 12 kilometres (7.45 miles with 2 full laps).
All races started on a line near the Lido and as runners approach the start line to get ready for the off they are presented with a glorious view over London with all the famous sites to be seen in the distance.
However turning around to prepare for the start presented a less attractive view up the long hill which lead to the first lap of the race. Each lap of the course followed the same route and wound through some picturesque countryside but with few flat sections and many thick muddy sections it made for very tough running. With at least 2000 feet having run over the course throughout the day the last runners had a hard time with the mud stirred up to a fine consistency that seemed to glue running shoes to the ground. None the less many sections of each lap were through enjoyable tree lined avenues and the finish was ideal with a steep downhill to the end.
Pauline Dable lead the Kenilworth Runners ladies in with an excellent run to finish in 52.28 minutes in 401st position out of 444 finishers. Wayne Oaks lead the men in with yet another superb run to finish in 49.45 minutes in 435th position out of 1290 finishers.
Given the quality of the competitors Kenilworth Runners performed excellently with the men’s team, of 6 to count, finishing in 69th position out of 99 teams.
