On a misty Sunday morning which improved as the morning advanced 18 members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Lowsenford to take part in the 5th race of the Winter handicap series of races.
This race introduced a new feature to the event, members had the option of running one or two laps of the course. This would enable potential London Marathon entrants to get a longer run on a Sunday morning.
The 4 mile course started and finished just outside the Fleur de Leys Public House in Lowsenford. From the start the runners proceeded down the hill to take a sharp right turn and up a very steep hill out of the village and so towards Henley in Arden but at the first left turn they entered a slightly descending lane to take them towards Preston Baggot which, after another sharp left turn, presented a particularly steep climb. The next two miles to the finish line, or in the case of those who decided to run the two laps, the half way point, proved equally tough with plenty of ups and downs making this one of the tougher courses in the competition and excellent London training.
Ian Simpson had yet another good run and so retains the overall lead with 275 points but Roger Wilkes spotted a good opportunity to play his ‘joker’ and so double his points haul on the day which has elevated him to the lead of the ‘A’ group.
