08/10/05 Malvern Hill Race

On Saturday seven members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Malvern in Worcestershire to take part in the annual 6.75 mile hill race which was brilliantly organised by Worcester AC Club. 300 runners finished the race which was held on a very wet afternoon. Out on the course many of the tracks were difficult in wet conditions in particular the steep drop from Worcestershire Beacon the highest point in the race.

The Worcester Beacon Hill Race is a race that generally attracts runners who welcome the daunting prospect of an unrelenting climb followed by a sublime chase down hill to the finish line. This race offers this challenge in full with a steady pull up through the wooded sides of the Malvern Hills above the Town to meet the long gruelling track up to the summit of Worcester Beacon which stands at 1340 feet above sea level. The race returns via North End which also has its long climbs but, despite the inclement weather conditions on the day, still offered a superb view over Worcestershire as a reward for the earlier effort of the climb. Finally after North End is left behind the race heads downhill, to pass Saint Anne’s Well for the third time, and so back to the Rose Gardens in Malvern Town where the race started.

Emily Beacham was the star on the day taking the prestigious 2nd ladies award in 58.33 minutes. Martin Dorrill and Pat Noonan were locked in a battle throughout and whilst Martin just piped Pat at the finish with a time of 47.35 they together with Mick Williams took the men’s team award. Mick Morris finished in 76.51 and was awarded the 1st Men’s over 70 award on the day.

09/10/05 Kenilworth Half Marathon

The 2005 Kenilworth Runners Half Marathon, which also hosted the Warwickshire Road Race Championships, proved a sell out days before the event and yet again proved its popularity as an irresistible attraction to runners throughout this land and indeed some from abroad. No less than 609 runners completed this challenging course.
The day was made all the more memorable by the presence of the Mayor of Kenilworth, Councillor Dave Shilton who kindly handed prizes to the worthy winners but on a superb day every one of the 609 finishers was a true champion.

The day was ideal for running, cold but dry and with no discernable wind to hinder the competitors. The course chosen was that used in the previous events offering the runners many different challenges with a few hills and all in the beautiful Warwickshire countryside with fleeting views of the famous Castle at several points as a bonus. Starting in Fishponds Road it heads out along the nearby roads to eventually meet Rouncil Lane and a nice downhill. The course then follows Rouncil Lane until it turns right near Waste Green and head out towards Hatton Green where another right turn leads through Haseley Green to Haseley Knob and right to Beausale where after a short while it returns to Rouncil Lane and back to the Leisure Centre and the finish.
There may be bigger half marathons but few can boast such a beautiful course passing through truly English countryside.

This year's race proved yet another outstanding success for Kenilworth Runners and in particular for Roger Wilkes the race organiser and his team of helpers.

16/10/05 Abingdon Marathon

Two members of Kenilworth Runners, Sue Taylor and Nick Bradbury completed the tough Abingdon Marathon on a day when conditions for long distance running were ideal. On a lovely cool autumn day, overcast, with slight breeze, this three lap course took the competitors over a course that is mainly flat with the occasional incline, but gives the many spectators and supporters three chances of seeing the runners as they pass through Abingdon.

Sue had a storming run finishing in 3:27:20 in 180th position and finished just ahead of Nick Bradbury who also had an excellent run completing the race in 3:39:59 in 273rd position. Both members said afterwards that they felt it was a lovely course, well organised and run with good support and local enough to make it an easy trip in time to get back for lunch

23/10/05 Stoneleigh Dash - Winter League

The excellent Summer series has only just finished but it’s popularity has carried on into the first of the Winter Series with 26 members and guests attending the first race of this 8 race series.

This year there will be a change to the already successful formulae with the last four races being extended in distance by making these races two laps.

This will be of particular interest to those training for the London Marathon and offer them some pretty tough routes.

These will commence in January.

The first race was however a single 5 mile race over very familiar local roads and tracks. Starting outside the Cricket Club in Glasshouse Lane the runners took the steady climb until reaching Crewe Lane which gave some relief past the Golf Club to reach the B4115 and turn right to eventually turn up Rocky Lane and back into Glasshouse Lane. A left turn took the runners out of Rocky Lane and after a steady run to Farmer Ward Road and along Whitemoor Road and they turned along the footpath just before Windy Harbour to reach the finish near the Cricket Club.

These are early days in the series and there are a lot of points to be fought for over some very tough courses but after Sunday it is Nick Bradbury who is overall leader with 50 points having had a magnificent run and probably wishing he had played his joker which doubles the points gained on the day.
