This was the 5th race of the series which again attracted a large turnout of 42 members and guests last Thursday evening to a 4 mile race that started and finished outside the Gauntlet Public House in Caesar Road, Kenilworth.
On a pleasant evening the runners left Caesar Road to turn left into Fishponds Road, John a Gaunt Road and so up the hill to Rounds Hill. After turning right into Rouncil Lane they left Kenilworth down the steep hill to then climb up until they reached Woodcote Lane. After passing through Leek Wotton the turned left onto the Coventry Road which presented them with a long steady climb to eventually turn left into Rouncil Lane and so back to Caesar Road via Mortimer Road, Chestnut Avenue and Oaks Road.
For the second race in succession the course records were broken with another stunning run by Martin Dorrill to finish the 4 miles in 22.18 minutes and smash the men’s record BUT it was the ladies who broke two records with Rachel Canning breaking the senior ladies with a superb run of 29.57 minutes and Lucy Aphramor the veteran ladies in 25.08 minutes. In the handicap league Stan Alexander had yet another great run to hold on to the overall lead. Newcomer Sharon Litterick had a good run to take the full 50 points.

Barford Super Belter - Summer League
Once again this Summers series of road races attracted a large number of members and guests this time to Barford for a tough six mile race.
At first sight the course offers little difficulty but when out on the run the competitor soon realises that it is one long climb after another. Starting at the entrance to Wasperton Lane the course soon starts to climb steadily until after about a mile there is some relief but at the tee junction and a left turn another climb appears which continues up onto the Banbury Road and over the M40 until a left turn takes the runner into Hareway Lane and a rare stretch of downhill but not for long as the road gradually climbs up and up until Barford is reached where a left turn takes the runners through the village and so to the finish in Wasperton Lane.
Ruth Barnes broke the ladies course record with a sparkling run in 37.15 minutes. Andy Preshouse took the full 50 points for the best handicap with an excellent run. Stan Alexander who is in superb form at this time kept hold of the overall lead but Keith Blake is hot on his heels which will make for an exciting last two races.

Milton Keynes Half Marathon
In ideal weather conditions two members of Kenilworth Runners took part in this half marathon. Cool temperatures and later rain are ideal conditions for a good performance and Nick Bradbury and Andy Holbrooke demonstrated this fact. The course was flat and scenic and the race organisation was excellent with every finisher receiving a medal and goody bag.
Andy is a new member of the club and showed what a powerful runner he is by finishing in 68th position in the impressive time of 86.02 minutes. Nick also had a good run to finish in 118th position in 91.04 minutes.

Annual Stratford V Kenilworth Runners - Inter Club Race
A large turnout of Stratford and Kenilworth members met in Snitterfield on a cool but very pleasant evening to take part in the annual club competition. Organised this year by Kenilworth Runner’s Roger Wilkes the atmosphere was friendly but in the race no quarter were asked and non given as all the runners strove to give their best for their club. This year there were no less than 62 runners in total with a remarkable 23 ladies.
The course chosen for the race was anything but easy starting in Snitterfield on the Wolverton Road the first two miles was a steady climb until the right turn to Norton Lindsey was reached when the course eased to pass through Norton Lindsey and take Snitterfield Lane to Snitterfield and the finish in Wolverton Road. A total distance of 5.75 miles this was a tough race.
Despite having 4 of the first 6 runners the overall strength of Stratford AC told and they took the overall and ladies title but Kenilworth took the men’s. N. Hawkins of Stratford was the first finisher in a splendid 32.42 and Lucy Aphramor was the first lady to finish in an impressive 35.55.
The whole evening was completed by a superb buffet in the Snitterfield Arms and most enjoyable evening swapping running stories.

Roger's Railway Handicap
This annual Club event attracted 23 club members to the disused railway line that once connected Kenilworth to the main line at Balsall Common. The race is based upon the handicap times established in the Summer Race Series and runners are started according to their handicap times.
The course is the simplest possible for the runners run two and half miles starting on the bridge in Crackley Lane and turning at a point about half a mile from Cromwell Lane Bridge, where they turn and then to run back to Crackley Bridge and the finish. To anybody but a runner this would appear an easy flat course but, as steam trains found years ago it takes a lot of coal to ascend what is a steady climb to the half way mark. It also took a lot of puff to get the runners to that point but the return was fast and furious.
Mike Seach had an excellent run in 40.51 minutes to beat his handicap by 72 seconds and claim the title. Julie Bevan, Mary Joyce, Richard Greenhalf were just behind him also having beaten their handicaps.
