07/06/05 Weedon 10Km - Midlands Grand Prix

The fifth race in the eight race East Midlands Grand Prix Road Race series was held at Weedon, just south of Daventry, in Northamptonshire. Mick Morris Kenilworth Runner's over 70 athlete represented the club in this race which is rated as the hardest in the series, a fact confirmed by the continuous series of hills on route.

The course starts in the village of Weedon and the first half mile proves immediately that this is no easy run with a steady climb out of the village when some respite is gained although it must be said the next two miles are hardly flat. The central section of the course can justly be claimed as picturesque for the next two miles the road passes along a high plateau which gives glorious views over the Northamptonshire countryside. Not that many runners noticed this for the climb up to the heights was long and steep. Even after this climb the course was undulating with some long inclines but did provide a superb downhill finish, if that is, you forget the short painful climb just before the end.

Mick Morris finished in 54.38 minutes in the second over 70 position and 303rd overall out of an impressive 347 finishers, an astonishing turnout of athletes from clubs all over the Midlands on a Tuesday evening.

09/06/05 Burton Bruiser - Summer League

Again a bumper turnout of 32 Club Members took part in the third event of the series which was over a 6 mile course.

The course has been used many times before but never gets any easier as it includes some tough sections. Starting outside the Peeping Tom Public House on Cromwell Lane it heads out to Red Lane and so down the hill to met the Birmingham Road. A short way along there is a left turn up Beehive Hill and along to Hollis Lane another long winding section until it meets Crackley Lane and after two climbs heads past Bockendon Grange onto Westwood Heath Hill which finally taxes tired legs but the end is now in sight opposite the start. The final lap on Thursday was the short stretch into the Peeping Tom for an excellent meal with a thirst sapping drink.

Brennan Lively was star of the evening taking the handicap and so gained the full 50 points, but David Wheatly also had an excellent run to take the overall position.

14/06/05 Banbury 5 mile - Midlands Grand Prix

The sixth race in the eight race East Midlands Grand Prix Road Race series was held in Banbury on a cool Tuesday evening. Kristy Dable and Mick Morris represented Kenilworth Runners in this race. The race attracted nearly 400 runners with 379 finishers which is a tremendous turnout for a Tuesday Evening.

The course started just off the Bloxham Road and passed down Queensway before turning onto the Broughton Road and for two miles is undulating rather than hilly but at the village of Broughton turned sharp left and up a long steep hill until the Bloxham road was reached again and so to the finish just before Queensway.

Mick Morris finished in 42.35 minutes to take 2nd over 70 position in 327th overall position and Kristy Dable finished in 49.25 minutes in 379th position.

19/06/05 Blackpool Half and Full Marathon

Two members of Kenilworth Runners took part in these two tough events on a scorching Sunday morning with a very high humidity despite the closeness of the sea.

Stuart Hopkins tackled the daunting Marathon course whilst Nick Bradbury took on the half marathon. Despite the very tough conditions both had superb runs with Stuart beating the magic 3 hour target by finishing in 11th position out of 808 finishers with the excellent time of 2 hours 55 minutes and 34 seconds.

Nick also had a good run finishing in 280th position out of 1654 finishers in the time of 1 hour 44 minutes and 50 seconds.

21/06/05 Harborough 5 Mile - Midlands Grand Prix

Mick Morris represented Kenilworth Runners in the 6th race of the excellent East Midlands Grand Prix Race series. The race is called the Harborough 5 as it is run by the Athletic Club of that name but starts just under the walls of Gartree Prison in Leicestershire.

The course takes in delightful country lanes throughout and after a steady downhill into the village of Lubbenham it takes a steady climb up towards Gumley and after two more turns and climbs heads to Foxton, famous for the Canal Locks, and so to the finish by the Prison.

Mick finished in 295th position out of 358 finishers, and 2nd over 70, in a time of 42 minutes and 52 seconds.

23/06/05 Ashorne Attack - Summer League

This was the 4th race of the series and attracted no less than 45 members and guests to Ashorne last Thursday evening which again confirmed what a success this series of races has become.

The 3.5 mile course chosen for the race started and finished in the village of Ashorne. The route took the runners on the road towards Harbury but at the cross roads it turned right and passed by Little Morrell and then Newbold Pacey up to the right turn back to the finish in Ashorne.

Not only was the there a large turnout on the evening but records tumbled on the night. Martin Dorrill had a superb run and to show what impressive form he is in he beat the men's course record with a stunning effort to finish in 21 minutes and 34 seconds. Not to be outdone Ruth Barnes had an equally terrific run to beat the ladies course record finishing in 22 minutes and 33 seconds.

Stan Alexander took the handicap on the evening and with it the full 50 points and by playing his joker and is now overall leader of the series with 221 points
