6/02/05 - Winter League Race 5

Kenilworth Runners Winter League Road Race Handicap Series

On a dull but mild Sunday morning 18 members of Kenilworth Runners took part in the 5th of this highly competitive series of races. The venue for this one was beautiful countryside around the little village of Hunningham.

This race had the two starts, first for the 'A' group and then 10 minutes later for the 'B' and 'C' groups. This 5 mile race follows a course starting by the Red Lion Public House and then out of Hunningham along Weston Lane before turning right after a mile to take the road to Wappenbury. Another right turn along a narrow lane passes Wappenbury Hall and through Eathorpe to join the Fosse Way. This ancient road climbs up Hunningham Hill where a right turn leads onto a smooth two mile downhill to the finish in Hunningham.

John Dagnan out shone every one with a splendid run to beat his predicted time by no less than 4 minutes and so take the full 50 points on offer. Sue Divine continued her fine form to continue to hold the overall lead with 232 points. The other group positions are as follows:-

GROUP RUNNER POINTS

B Stef Shillington 179
B Richard Greenhalf 141

6/02/05 - Charnwood Hill Race

Always a popular race in the calendar, the 19th Charnwood Hills Race was as good as ever. Of the 8 Kenilworth Runners who tackled this challenging 12.5 mile off-road race, two came away with first prizes!

Lucy Aphramor, winner of last years Hilly Challenge in the Abbey Fields, was running her first 'Charnwood' and set such a scorching pace that she left all her challengers behind her and claimed the prestigious first ladies prize. Mick Williams also had an excellent run to be the first over 45 man to finish. For once Julian Simpson managed to stay ahead of Mick (rather than be reeled in on the final hill as usual) and was first Kenilworth runner home in 10th position.

As usual the race started and finished at the School in the village of Ansty, just a few miles north of Leicester, proceeded downhill (through thick mud) to enter Bradgate Park and pass by the Medieval Priory and then up the steep hill to leave the Park and go down another steep hill known as ’Heartbreak Hill’, an unwelcome challenge on the return at 10 miles. After an easy section over the golf course the tough climb up Broombriggs is met with it's equally sharp descent to enter Beacon Hill Country Park where this year the course followed the hard track to the summit of Beacon Hill at the outcrop of rocks and then continued with the track to return to the bottom of Broombriggs which was then skirted until the outward course was meet below the hill and so across the golf course to Heartbreak Hill and through Bradgate Park back to the school and welcome showers.
