02/01/05 - The Huncote Hash

Mick Morris, Kenilworth Runners over 70 member, was the club's representative in this annual event. Held at the impressive Leisure Centre in the Leicestershire village of Huncote this race has been on the running calendar for over 10 years and each year attracts more and more runners who like to start the year with a 'tough one'.

The race starts in the relatively grassy field by the leisure Centre but after passing through a little wood onto a muddy track that gets worse as the sand quarry is approached. Skirting the quarry the course passes over some very muddy fields before the steep climb to the top of the local eminence 'Croft Hill'. Whilst only a short climb the hill provides a tough challenge as does the downhill that follows to take runners back over the fields to the first obstacle - The Stream; which the runners run up for about 100 yards before they enter a new world of sticky sand and very sharp climbs. Due to recent rains this last two miles of the race was very difficult with continuous little climbs up sand hills and through a deep pudding of sand. After the Sand Quarry the race returns to the field by the Leisure Centre and to the finish.

Mick completed the race in 69 minutes 20 seconds.
