12/08/04 - Honiley Super Hoof - Summer League Race 7

On a pleasant evening 36 members of Kenilworth Runners met to take part in the penultimate race of the series, known to club members as the 'Honiley Super Hoof' so named because it starts in the lane leading to Honiley and it is the longest of two club races that start at this spot place.

The race started in the lane opposite the Honiley Corus Hotel and then proceeded through Honiley towards Beausale turning right at the tee junction along the lane and after a left turn the race passed through Haseley Knob and to Haseley Green when after a comforting downhill a sharp left turn took the race through Waste Green and Beausale and back to the start opposite the Hotel.

Lucy and James Hartwright retained their joint overall lead in the series with 284 points after superb runs BUT they are now being closely pressed by Laurence Copeland, who had a storming run, to close the gap to 5 points and Sue Divine who maintained her good form. So with several members yet to play their jokers (doubles the points) the final outcome is far from certain.

Who will be the overall winner of this seasons hard fought series? Well that will all depend upon performances in the last race which is to be held at Norton Lindsey on the 26th August starting at 7.30p.m. The six mile course is one of the toughest of the 8 in the series with 3 miles downhill at the start and 3 miles up hill at the end.

This has been an excellent series of races, extremely well attended, and the tough uncompromising course for the final race is a fitting conclusion to the series which has been greatly enjoyed by all who have taken part and for which we all have to thank our race organiser Roger Wilkes for an excellent summers hard competition.

The group positions are:-

26/08/04 - Final Race - Summer League Race 8

26 members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Norton Lindsey to take part in the 8th and final event in Kenilworth Runners Summer Road Race Handicap League and to settle the burning question - Who would take the coveted overall winners position. Would Lucy beat Husband James Hartwright, they were level after the last race, or would they remain on equal points or would somebody have an extraordinary race and overtake them both?

If there was to be any course to sort the final positions out then this was it, truly a fitting challenge to produce the overall winner.

This six mile race started and ended outside The New Inn in the village of Norton Lindsey. The runners headed out of the village towards Snitterfied and after only a few yards of downhill faced a tough climb before descending rapidly past Luscombe Farm on the right before tackling another short but taxing climb into Pigeon Green and Snitterfield Village. Two immediate right turns took the runners through Snitterfield and onto the 'hard part' of the race. Following the Wolverton Road out of Snitterfied the runners firstly faced a sharp but short climb and then after a relatively flat section took on the taxing climb up into Wolverton and so through the hamlet to climb again to the cross roads to turn right past Newlands Farm back into Norton Lindsey being careful to turn right into the village and so to the finish.

When the times were feed into our Race Organiser's computer James Hartright came out top with 301 points and so is a very worthy winner of the 2004 title which he has dominated since the second race. His wife Lucy, who has challenged him throughout the series, took the 'A' group title with yet another superb run gaining 289 points. Race Organiser, Roger Wilkes, took the 'B' group title with 281 points for a succession of excellent runs which gave him 281 points and Richard Steel took the 'C' group title with 271 points a reward for which he has worked hard and run well for over the series.

This has been an excellent series of races which have been thoroughly enjoyed by all Kenilworth Runners who took part, sometime in inclement weather, in a tough series of races but all in beautiful surroundings in the district and so it was most gratifying to learn that our Race Organiser, Roger Wilkes, gained deserved reward for the hard work he has put into the series by taking the 'B' group title.

The final group positions were:-
