03/06/04 - Summer Handicap League Race 2

35 members of Kenilworth Runners plus a sprinkling of guests took part in the second race of the Summer Series of 8 races. Called 'The Preston Baggot Bash' because it takes in the Hamlet of Preston Baggot on its figure of eight course it offers a fair challenge to all runners.

Arguably the toughest of all the events in this years series the race started at the bottom of the steep hill on the road leading to Beaudesert and after about a mile passed down a green lane and through a very boggy ford to climb up to turn right onto the road leading to Preston Bagot where a sharp right turn took the runners up another long hill and eventually back to the green lane again. This time at the end of the lane the runners turned left to encounter the long tough climb up to 'The Rookery' after which there is a steady descent to the finish in Lowsenford.

Whilst all the other runners shunned the idea of using their joker on this difficult course, Sue Divine threw caution to the wind and played hers and as a result of this, and an excellent run that beat her predicted time, gained the full 50 points which doubled up to 100 and so joined Colin Dooling, who was marshalling, in the position of overall leader with 145 points each.. This puts them well ahead of the rest of the field where the positions are as follows:-

The next race is also 5 miles and starts at Kenilworth Castle Car Park at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday evening 17th June 2004.

06/06/04 - The Lake Vernwy Marathon

Kenilworth Runner's England star travelled to Wales on Sunday to take part in one of the toughest Marathons around in order to prepare herself for her England debut on the 27th June next.

By most runners standards this race is the ultimate in toughness particularly as the day was very hot. However to Isobel it was a mere 'training run' in which she still achieved the prestigious position of 3rd lady in the incredible time of 3 hours 12 minutes. Such is her prowess in Ultra distance races that she also had time to admire the spectacular scenery on this two lap course which circumnavigates the beautiful Lake Verny. Isobel's training is going well for the big event later this month.

06/06/04 - The Castle to Castle 10km

A large contingent of Kenilworth Runners members took part in this popular and spectacularly successful race but I am waiting for the full results to appear on the Web Site so I will let you have them when they are available.

Hans Smits was 1st over 40
Lou Frondella was 2nd over 45
Richard Elliott was 1st over 50

08/06/04 - The East Midlands Grand Prix Road Race Series

The fifth race in the eight race East Midlands Grand Prix Road Race series was held at Weedon, just south of Daventry, in Northamptonshire.. Four members of Kenilworth Runners took part in the race which is rated as the hardest in the series in normal conditions but on Tuesday the evening was hot and humid so making this difficult race even harder. Despite the conditions over 300 runners completed the race.

The course can justly be claimed as picturesque for after four kilometres the road passes along a high plateau which gives glorious views over the Northamptonshire countryside. Not that many runners noticed this for the climb up to the heights was long and steep. Even after this climb the course was undulating with some long inclines but did provide a superb downhill finish, if that is, if you forget the short painful climb just before the end.

Despite the hardship of the course and the weather conditions Kenilworth Runners acquitted themselves well. Lead in by Roger Wilkes in the excellent time of 55 minutes and 3 seconds to give him 4th position in the over 65 category and 274th overall. He was followed by the indomitable Pauline Dable (56.20, 6th, 288th) and Kristy Dable (58.51, 21st, 299th). However the star Kenilworth Runner was Pam Wilkes who gained 1st place in her category (60.31, 1st, 305th)

13/06/04 - Northbrooke 10km Road Race

This was the second race of the Warwickshire Road Race League and was contested in fiercely hot conditions on a very undulating course around the Brownshill Green and Corley Moor areas of Coventry. Hans Smits had yet another fantastic run to finish in seventh position with his very fast time of 34 minutes and 44 seconds. In the womens race Sandy Pearman was first Kenilworth lady home with a great run to finish in 171st position overall (51 minutes and 50 seconds). The winning time was 32:31 (Emerson Combstock, Godiva) and there were 238 finishers. Times of the 16 Kenilworth Runners who ran are:

17/06/04 - Kenilworth Runners Summer Hanicap Race 5 mile

On a nice, cool, Thursday evening, 40 members of Kenilworth Runners and their guests turned up at Kenilworth Castle to take part in the 3rd race of this popular and fiercely contested series of club races.

This time the 5 mile course was what is usually described as 'multi-terrian' as it started at the Brays to pass under the Castle Walls to come out into Purlieu Lane. The next 2 miles were along the footpath to Honiley passing over the Pleasance and eventually up the long hill to Chase Lane at Warriors Lodge Farm. The remainder of the race was along Chase Lane to the Birmingham Road finally finishing in the Brays having arrived via Purlie lane and the footpath beneath the Castle Wall.

Again the overall leadership changed and Laurence Copeland holds that honour, having now amassed 178 points, the result of a magnificent run that beat his predicted time by a good measure and at the same time playing his joker to double his score. However he will need to be at his best if he is to retain that position for he is hotly pursued by Sue Divine and many runners have yet to play their Joker. The Group positions are as follows:-

GROUP RUNNER POINTS

A Sue Divine 173
A Lucy Hartwright 135
A Tim Payne 113

B Colin Dooling 145
B James Hartwright 128
B John Woodrow 125
