04/05/04 - East Midlands Grand Prix Race 1 Silverstone 10K

On a cold and wet evening with frequent rain storms seven members of Kenilworth Runners, three ladies and four men, travelled to the Silverstone Motor Race Stadium in Northamptonshire to compete in the Silverstone 10 kilometre race which is the first of 8 races that make up this excellent series. This race always attracts a good turnout and on the evening there were 832 finishers.

The race started on the grid where normally only high speed motors are to be found but on Tuesday evening it was to be human effort that covered two complete circuits taking in all the same twists and turns top drivers experience. Whilst the course appeared to be flat there were two steady inclines near the end of each lap which provided a stimulating view as the pit stop was reached. The sign for a 'pit stop' beckoned the end of the race which finished in the area normally associated with the hectic changing of wheels etc.!

Richard Elliott lead the runners in with a splendid effort to command 3rd men's over 50 category, but whilst the younger runners usually take the major share of the attention it was the eldest group of runners, the men's over 70's, who produced the exciting finish with the four competitors in this select group all finishing within 52 seconds of each other and Mick Morris just being piped to the post. Pauline Dable and Pam Wilkes both had excellent runs to both finish 2nd in their age category.

08/05/04 - Icknield Way 10k

Located at Chinnor. Oxon, this was a multi terrain race taking in Bledlow Ridge.
Continuous heavy rain gave treachorous conditions underfoot on the clay soils of the Chilterns and after a heavy fall Pauline opted to complete just one circuit for 10k instead of her intened distance of half marathon.

09/05/04 - Hilly Challenge

On Sunday morning many runners and a large crowd of onlookers came to Kenilworth Runners 15th Annual Hilly Challenge and Fun Run which was again held in the beautiful arena of the Abbey Fields, Kenilworth. The weather was at its best for running, dry but cool and so everything was set for a superb mornings sport and the spectators were certainly not to be disappointed.

Throughout the event Councillor Dave Shilton, a staunch supporter of Kenilworth Runners, made the announcements and kept everybody well informed of the progress of both races and at the end Miss Verity Rivers, Kenilworth Carnival Queen, presented prizes to the winners.

The 1 mile fun run started the proceedings with lots of children of all ages and their mothers and fathers and the occasional dog taking part. The run takes in the Abbey ruins and the lake and returns back by the tennis courts. 12/05/04 - The Provident Rugby 6 Mile Road Race - The East Midlands Grand Prix 2004 Series

Seven members of Kenilworth Runners took part in the second race of this superb series of road races, The Provident Rugby 6 Mile Road Race.

The course could not have been more different from that used for the first race on Silverstone Motor Race Track a week earlier. Gone were the stands and pit stops to be replaced by pleasant country lanes and steep climbs. The race started on the road just outside St Andrews Rugby Club in Ashlawn Road, Rugby. It headed along Ashlawn Road to turn left into Onley Lane when after a long downhill and crossing over the M45 the lane reached Cart Horse Hill to turn left part way up the Hill into Barby Lane. This lane took the race back over the M45 to the Hillmorton Road and so back into Ashlawn Road and to the finish which was on the field at the Rugby Club.

Mick Williams and Richard Elliott battled it out to be the first Club member to finish and it was Mick who just got ahead to finish in 35 minutes and 33 seconds with Richard finishing 22 seconds later. Other members had good runs, in particular Pauline Dable (50.00). Full details of all the times and positions as follows:-

18/05/04 - Bedford 6 mile - The East Midlands Grand Prix 2004 Series

On a dry and reasonably cool Tuesday evening 3 members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Bedford to take part in the third event of this prestigious road race series. This time the distance was 6 miles. This series is proving more and more popular with 313 runners finishing which is an astonishing number for a midweek evening 6 mile race.

The six mile course started in a very pleasant park near the race headquarters at The Mark Rutherford School, Bedford. After a mile through the suburbs of Bedford the race entered a nice quite, but undulating lane which it followed for two miles before turning left to present the runners with a long hill which was quite steep in places. The effort of climbing the hill was rewarded by a lovely long downhill back to the Park and after a small detour in the Park to the finish line.

Pauline Dable lead the runners home with an excellent run in 49 minutes and 51 seconds to come 5th lady in the over 55 category and 253rd overall. She was followed by 71 year old Mick Morris in 50.59 being 2nd in the over 70 category and 268th overall with Kristy Dable finishing in the splendid time of 56.22 to finish 82nd in the senior ladies and 296th overall.

Each runner completes a distance of 3 miles and positions are based upon the total time of the 8 runners. There are different age categories and Kenilworth's team entered the over 40 event. Against very strong opposition Kenilworth Runners finished in a total time of 2 hours and 25 minutes to 45th out of 67 teams, a very good effort for the first time they have entered this event. The runners individual times are as follows:-

Leg 1 - Richard Elliott 16.39
Leg 2 - Luigi Frondella 16.52
Leg 3 - Simon Vine 19.32
Leg 4 - John McNally 18.35

23/05/04 - Sutton Park 50km Ultra distance road race

On a warm Sunday at Sutton Park, Birmingham, with temperatures arround 20 degrees centigrade throughout, Isobel Partridge a keen member of Kenilworth Runners put in such an impressive performance in this tough 50 kilometre Ultra distance road race that she has been selected to run for ENGLAND in an even tougher event, a 100 kilometre race for the Anglo-Celtic plate to be run at Cardiff on the 27th June next. However her selection was not based only on this one race, which involved 10 laps of 5 kilometres each on an undulating course and in which she finished in 3rd lady in the remarkable time of 3 hours and 52 minutes, but also upon a very impressive 12 months Ultra distance racing which included her massive achievement in Kenilworth runners own event at Draycote, when she was 1st Lady to finish.

Isobel and Sam Kincaid, another member of Kenilworth Runners who was recently chosen to run for IRELAND, give Kenilworth Runers the enviable claim to have TWO National runners in that most demanding of events The Ultra Marathon!

26/05/04 - The East Midlands Grand Prix 2004 Series

On Wednesday evening two members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Rockingham Speedway Racing Circuit, Corby, to compete in the fourth race of this competitive series of races. This was the shortest of the races so far, after 6.2 miles at Silverstone, 6 miles at Rugby and Bedford, this time the distance was 5 miles, but despite the bitterly cold evening there were a large gathering of runners and the race had 326 finishers.

The two lap course lay over the circuit normally used by fast cars and motor bicycles and was mainly flat but with some steady inclines. The surface of the course was excellent and with the weather conditions combined to make this an excellent opportunity for fast times.

Pauline Dable finished in a very creditable 39 minutes and 57 seconds in 4th position in her age category whilst daughter Kristy followed her in with yet another good run in 45 minutes and 26 seconds to finish 25th in her age category.

27/05/04 - Summer League Race - 'Hampton Lucy Lurker'

No sooner has the Winter League finished and awards made than Kenilworth Runners are involved in the Summer races. The first was held last Thursday evening which was cool but very pleasant at Charlcote near Stratford on Avon.

A large contingent of 37 club members and guests took part in a 5 mile race known as ' The Hampton Lucy Lurker', so named because it passes through the picturesque village of Hampton Lucy on the way out. Starting outside Charlecote park, with the deer looking on in amazement, the race turns left into Charlecote Road to pass through the village and head out along the very pleasant Stratford Road. After 2 miles there is a sharp right turn into Hatton Bank Lane which presents the runners with a long steep hill. Another sharp right turn takes them into Snitterfield Street and back through Hampton Lucy to finish at the end of Charlecote Road.

Colin Dooling started as he means to continue in the series with a very impressive run to be first over the finish line and cleverly played his joker at the same time, thus giving him the maximum 100 points. Lou Frondella, who is in top form at this time also played his joker, and had an excellent run, thus he gained 90 points. Both will be difficult to catch in the remaining 7 races.

The overall group position is as follows:-

GROUP RUNNER POINTS

A Laurence Copland 45
A Mick Morris 45
A Sue Divine 45

B Gus Davidson 47
B John Woodrow 46

31/05/04 - Boddington 10km

On a very hot and calm morning three members of Kenilworth runners turned up in Upper Boddington to compete in the local 10km race. The course was mostly flat and with no shade! The heat and the after-effects of the hilly 100 were felt, but the event was very enjoyable and is recommended to everyone for next year. All proceeds go to local charities and there is a lot of support on the day. I (Rebecca) must thank John for encouraging me around the first three miles - maybe next time I will hang on for longer!!!

All four runners recorded excellent times with John McNally leading them in with a superb run in 40 minutes and 20 seconds to take 18th position. He was closely followed by Nick Bradbury (40.50: 23rd) who took the prestigious prize of 3rd male veteran over 40. Rebecca Kendal also had an excellent run (41.51) BUT it was Jane McNally who was the star of the day taking FIRST lady veteran place in 50 minutes and 38 seconds, a magnificent performance.

Results:

John McNally 40.20 18th
Nick Bradbury 40.50 23rd (3rd male vet over 40)
Rebecca Kendall 41.51
Jane McNally 50.35 (1st vet lady)
