14/12/03 Winter League Race 3 - Preston Bagot Bash

On a cold but pleasant Sunday morning 24 members of Kenilworth Runners met in the picturesque village of Lowsenford to take part in the third race of the series.

Any race in the locality of Lowsenford is tough because of the nature of terrain which offers plenty of stiff hill climbs. This 4 mile race certainly had its fair share of these hills with the first tough climb being met only yards from the start on the lane that leads to Henley in Arden. Near the left turn at Kites Green the road drops to enter the hamlet of Preston Bagot, from which it gets its club name of 'The Preston Bagot Bash', and then turns left to meet a vicious hill near Preston Fields and the last mile to the finish at Lowsenford reserves a few more climbs. Quite a tough four miles.

The tough course did not deter Karen Carter who has been in excellent form recently. With a superb run she was the star on the day and so earned the full 50 points on offer and into the bargain took the overall lead with 145 points in total.

The group positions are as follows:-

Group A: Tim Payne 140; Mick Morris 130; Pam Wilkes 120

Group B: Stef Shillington 144 ; Martin Carter 130 ; Roger Wilkes 118

Group C: Ivan Holdsworth 133 ; John McNally 97; Roland Smythe 81

16/12/03 Letter from Oz

Merry Christmas to you all. I've just had a look at the website and it seems people are running pretty well. We've hardly been doing any running (as you may be able to tell from the photos) but
we're having a great time on our round the world trip.

We're now in the South Island of New Zealand, having arrived last Saturday from Sydney. Australia was great. We spent a month in Western Australia doing a trip north to the Ningaloo Reef from some snorkelling and hired a car to go south from Perth seeing loads of massive trees and climbing one aswell as doing some wine tasting around Margaret River.

From Perth we then flew to Melbourne and hired a campervan. We drove along the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide and then back to Melbourne for England v's Samoa. We then decided Melbourne was too cold and wet so drove north to Brisbane, via Canberra. We then did a couple of surfing lessons and lazed around on beaches on our way down the coast to Sydney, where we stayed off and on for a couple of weeks, with a brief trip to the Blue Mountains for some walking. We were in Sydney in the run up to the final of the rugby and the atmosphere was pretty amazing. We managed to watch Oz v's NZ in the semi on a big screen on the steps of the Opera house with 4000 others which was brilliant.

After a few more weeks in the South Island doing walking, mountain biking, kayaking and white water rafting we're off to the North Island for a few weeks then onto Fiji, the west coast of USA, then New York before coming back in March.

It doesn't feel like Christmas here - it's summer and we're not going to the usual parties and stuff in the run-up but we're still having a great time.

Hope you are all well. Happy New Year too!

We've attached a couple of photos of us while we were in Australia, one of us in the Botanical Gardens in Canberra and the other of us and a possum, on the coast near Sydney.

28/12/03 Huncote Hash

On a bright Sunday morning Julian Tombs and Mick Morris of Kenilworth Runners travelled to the Leicestershire village of Huncote for the annual 'mud splash' 6 mile cross country race.
The race starts in the relatively grassy field by the leisure Centre but after passing through a little wood pass onto a muddy track that gets worse as the sand quarry is approached. Skirting the quarry the course passes over some very muddy fields before the steep climb to the top of the local eminence 'Croft Hill'. Whilst only a short climb the hill was covered by icy grass which made the climb very difficult and the downhill that followed to take runners back over the fields to the first obstacle - The Stream which the runners run up for about 100 yards and then into the Sand Quarry. Due to recent rains this was very sticky - so sticky that Mick Morris left shoe fell apart and he had to run with a bare left foot for the rest of the race. After several steep climbs over mountains of sand the race returns to the field by the Leisure Centre and to the finish.
Julian Tombs had an excellent run in difficult conditions and finished in 47 minutes and 34 seconds whilst Mick Morris followed him in a time of 66 minutes and 15 seconds despite having only one shoe for the last two miles.
