07/09/03 - Carver, Wolverhampton Half and Full Marathons

In ideal conditions, warm and still, 3 Kenilworth Runners tackled this now annual event. On the undulating course starting from Weston Park (2 laps for the marathon and one for half marathon) to the north of Wolverhampton, John McNally took on the 26.2 miles and finished in 3:07, whilst tackling the less arduous half, Tom Dable returned 1:38 and Pauline Dable, 1:52

14/09/03 - Bullock Smithy Hike

Stef Shillington took a rest from running last weekend to take part in a very tough 60 mile cross country walk.
The Bullock Smithy Hike starts at Hazel Grove, near Manchester, and then proceeds to Edale taking in such famous beauty spots as 'The Bow Stones', 'Chinley Churn' and 'Edale Cross' at about 20 miles. From there it passes through the beautiful Derbyhire Dales to reach 'Axe Edge' near Buxton at about 40 miles and so back to Hazel Grove.
This is a very tough event involving long and steep climbs which starts at mid day and so the competitors have to walk through the night which involves some difficult navigation.
Fortunately weather conditions were perfect and Stef put in an excellent performance on such a tough route to finish in 18 hours and 51 minutes.

14/09/03 - Grunty Fen Half Marathon

Two members of Kenilworth Runners, Karen and Martin Carter, travelled to Cambridgeshire to take part in this annual half marathon. This 13.1 mile race is also part of the Road Runners Club sub Ultra competition and starts near the picturesque City of Ely with it's magnificent Cathedral.
The course being in Cambridgeshire is mainly flat with a few undulations but the flatness of course was offset by the blistering heat of 28 degrees which slowed some runners down but the organisation was superb and there was plenty of water stations en-route.
Despite the heat of the day both our runners had excellent runs with Martin finishing in 1 hour 46 minutes 9 seconds in 177th position overall out of 500 runners and Karen in 2 hours 27 minutes and 54 seconds in 395 position.

14/09/03 - Nottingham Half Marathon

In a brilliant run, Mike Johnson was the toast of the Runners as he stormed to a 4th place in this years race. Australian, Phil Sly, was too quick for everyone as he romped round the course in 1:05:30 - leaving a massive 3 minute gap before the second runner came home. Although Mike was 4th overall, he was the 2nd one back in the Sweatshop Grand Prix final. With Richard Steel heading home Martin Dorrill by 8 seconds, and Roger Homes coming home in 1:23 expectations were high that the team may have done well. As it turned out, we were placed 4th out of the 14 counties that were taking part. An excellent effort and a great performance by everyone in the team. John McNally and Colin Dooling were the other two members of the team, whilst Matt Kingtston Lee, was sandwiched in between.

The weather was very warm and dry and so it made for a difficult race - but the fact that this was a championship race, it seemed to spur the team on. Certainly it was an added bonus to be representing the County.

Whilst the team were doing their best, Matthew Kingston and Louis De la Porta were also running - if only Matt had run in some of the Grand Prix Races! Louis was attempting the race for the first time - and thoroughly enjoyed it - He'll be back!.

In the ladies race - it was Jane McNally who was first back, but there then followed a group of 5 Runners who all came in within 6 minutes of each other.

There were 6,500 runners in the half marathon, anda further 1,500 in the full marathon.

14/09/03 - Flora Light Challenge 5K

On Sunday Lyn Jaggard travelled to London to take part in this highly popular annual race around Hyde Park. In bright sunshine when the temperature climbed to 25 degrees she joined a field containing an estimated 22,000 ladies for this 5 kilometre race. The number of competitors demonstrates the popularity of running and also included some very famous names amongst the competitors.

The traditional course around Hyde Park was mainly flat but with a few slopes to test the runners. Taking in some of the well known streets of London the race passed along Broad Walk down Park Lane and finished at the Serpentine
The mornings event started with a muscle relaxing warm up session conducted by 'Mr Motivator' followed by the race at 10.30 a.m. and was lead out by a galaxy of stars including Paula Radcliff who finished in 14.51 minutes!, Deratu Tulu, Sonia O'Sullivan, Catherine Derara and Cathy Freeman, the Australian 400 metre Olympic star. Famous people from the TV also ran to make the race a superb event which Lyn was delighted to take part in as well as recording an excellent personal time of 28 minutes and 58 seconds.

This form of race is so popular that for the first time the organisers held a similar event in Birmingham to which 5000 athletes took part.

14/09/03 - Aldbourne 10K

On a very warm day 150 runners took part . The first 6km climbed out of the village followed by 2km undulating and 2km downhill. Once again Tom and Pauline represented the Club, with Tom finishing in 45:03 and Pauline 53:00

19/09/03 - Summer League Presentation

On Friday members and guests of Kenilworth Runners attended the Presentation and Quiz evening when the winners of the various categories in the Summer Handicap League and Roger's Railway Race were revealed and given their award.

The first presentations were for Roger's Railway Run which is based upon runners handicap times and involved a 5 mile race up and down the disused railway line to Berkswell. In this race Colin Dooling was the first man to finish and Julie Bevan the first Lady confirming the splendid season both have had with ever improving performances.

Whilst Roger's Railway Run is a one off, the Summer Handicap League is a long haul of eight races of varying distance and difficulty. The routes chosen are all pleasant and challenging and held at various places in South Warwickshire. This years event has been one of the best attended of all time and the number of ladies who ran in the series was particularly pleasing.

Competition has been fierce throughout the series and the group positions have been a scene of constant change. The overall position has been equally volatile changing hands at each race which shows the quality of the competition as well as being a testament to the fitness of all the athletes who took part. Kenilworth Runners can look back with satisfaction on a really successful series of races which have been thoroughly enjoyed by all concerned.

With the overall lead changing so frequently it was no surprise to learn that the series winner had not featured before. With a superb run in the last event 'The University Challenge' 5 mile race - not one for the faint hearted, Roger Wilkes beat his handicap by 8 seconds and also played his joker to accrue 300 points and so become a worthy overall winner of the 2003 Kenilworth Runners Summer Handicap League.

The final group positions are as follows:-

Group A - Julie Bevan 291 - Bob Griffiths 260 - Jane Pithie 255

Group B - Lisa Rodda 276 - James Hartwright 275 - Jayne Gillard 273

Group C - Richard Steel 246 - John McNally 213 - Mick Williams 194
