03/08/03 - Hook Norton 6

On a hot Sunday morning six members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Hook Norton a picturesque village in Oxfordshire to take part in the annual six mile road race. This is a two lap event which passes through the lovely Oxfordshire countryside.

With the sweltering heat adding its own burden onto the runners John McNally lead the Kenilworth contingent in with a superb run in 37 minutes and 54 seconds. He was followed by Roger Wilkes (46.20), Jane McNally (49.21), Pauline Dable (51.12) and Pam Wilkes (54.59).

07/08/03 - Oxford Motivation Series

Tom and Pauline have been out and about again. This time it was the penultimate race in the series - the Chipping Norton 4.25 miler. Conditions were far from ideal with temperatures still very high and coupled with the testing course meant it was not a night for personal bests. Tom recorded a time of 30:03 whilst Pauline was 33:50

07/08/03 - Roger's Railway Race

This annual pursuit race takes place on the disused railway track in Kenilworth. Starting on the bridge in Crackley Lane the race is a straight dash two and a half miles up the line and then back again. Sixteen members turned out - a lower than usual turn out - but all did well considering the conditions. First back was Erna Gerber, whilst first male was Andy Roote. Unfortunately, as they have yet to establish a handicap, they will not be eligible for Roger's trophy, that honour goes to.........................(be at the summer presentation to find out)

14/08/03 - Summer League Race 7 - Josh Last Jaunt

On Thursday evening 38 members and their guests took part in the 7th and penultimate race in the Summer Series. In this race each runner starts the race according to their handicap instead of the normal three group starts.

The five mile race started at Hatton Locks and headed west along the towpath towards John's Bridge where runners took a sharp climb up to the road and along and past Hatton Country World and shortly after onto a rough footpath over two fields to join a track leading past Home Farm. This track eventually grows into a lane and so to Hampton on the Hill where a sharp left turn takes runners past Woodway Farm and then Church Farm to eventually pass under the Railway bridge and at the Canal Bridge called 'Ugly Bridge' to turn onto the canal towpath and ascend the magnificent row of locks to the finish by Hatton Locks.

With only one race left Julie Beavan took full advantage of her strong position to run an excellent race and put herself into overall position with 283 points, 7 points ahead of her nearest challenger Lisa Rodda. With a splendid run James Hartwright also put himself in the frame with 276 points to take the Overall Title at the end of the series.

The group positions are as follows:-

GROUP A - Lucy Nott 217 - Jane Pithie 212 - Bob Griffiths 208

GROUP B - Lisa Rodda 276 - James Hartwright 275 - Colin Dooling 242

GROUP C - Richard Steel 225 - John McNally 208 - Mick Williams 184

The final 5 mile race of the series will be held on the 28th August 2003 starting at the Crackley Lane End of Cryfield Grange Road at 7.30 pm.

16/08/03 - Race the Train

After a two year absence, Kenilworth regained the senior mens trophy in the tough 14.75 mile main race. No fewer than 5 Runners beat the train this year, but it was Pat Noonan, Martin Dorrill and Mick Williams who secured the team prize - all finishing in the top 50 - out of field of over 800 finishers. Richard Steel and John McNally were the others to beat the train. Conditions were once again extremely hot and humid and the ground bone dry. With the race being slightly longer than in previous years - by some half mile - the train time was extended, but only by three minutes! The train completed the course in 1:48:03 this year and the winning time was an astonishing 1:21:48. Colin Dooling was trying the race for the first time and found it to be bit more difficult that the recent Tour of Thameside. Colin completed the course in 2:09.

The main race is the big attraction, but there is also the 10K race which is run in the morning. Five Runners tackled this one, with Suzanne Divine and Jane Pithie running it for the first time. Gerry Lewis and Daniel Biss were competing for the umpteenth time whilst Roland Smythe, having done the main race opted for the shorter one this year. The course follows the last 5 1/2 miles of the main race - it is only the start that is different - half a mile straight up a dirt track - before joining the main course and a steep descent to Dolgeth Falls. Again the course is slightly longer than 10K - nearer 10.5K and so the train time was lenghened to take this into account. In a field of 346 finishers, the trains whistle blew at 53 minutes and 19 seconds, with a winning time of 40:36. Roland Smythe completed the course in 50:08 with Daniel Biss and Gerry Lewis fighting it out for next place - Daniel just pipping Gerry to the post. Suzzane and Jane came in together - after deciding that racing in the hot conditions was not perhaps the best course of action.

28/08/03 - Summer League Race 8 - University Challenge

Last Thursday evening in cool and pleasant conditions 38 members and their guests took part in the 8th and last race in the Summer Series. .

This five mile race started at the Kenilworth end of Cryfield Grange Road to head off downhill towards the Coventry Road and Gibbet Hill. At the traffic lights it turned left into Gibbet Hill Road and so by the University to Kirby Corner where another left turn took the race into Westwood Heath Road and then after another mile into Bockendon Road which leads into Crackley Lane and so to the finish, but only after the steep climb by Roughknowles Wood.

Being the last race of the series it is customary to withhold the final positions and the overall winner until the presentation evening which will be held at the Wardens Cricket Club on Friday evening 19th September. However it is no secret that it will have taken a massive effort to overhaul the leaders after the last race but it is possible for a runner with his joker to play (doubles the points) and a determined attitude on a tough course
