05/07/03 - Le Touquet-Paris-Plage 10km & 20km Races

Ten members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to France to take part in these excellent road races. Le Touquet-Paris-Plage is a medium sized seaside town about forty miles south of Calais and every year holds these two races which are attended by many English Running Clubs as well as those from all over France and neighbouring countries. At least 1,000 runners lined up at the start each with his automatic timing devise strapped to his leg. The course was the same for both distances with the longer race having a second lap on what is a fairly flat course. The race started in the road by the superb Le Touquet sports arena which boasts a full size running track with the very latest surface as can be seen in the attached photograph. After passing through the Town the race headed out along the sea front to turn back into the Town at a point where there was a breathtaking view over the Channel. After passing back through the Town and along some, thankfully shady lanes, the race ended with a half lap of the running track which was like running on a cushion. Under blistering blue skies Mick Cruickshank and Roland Smythe ran the 20 Kilometre race and came in together in the splendid time of 1 hour 31 minutes. Martin Dorrill lead the 10 kilometre runners in with an excellent time of 36 minutes 6 seconds and followed by Gary Bradbury (44.05), Roger Wilkes (48.24), Time Payne (54.07) and Mick Morris (55.16).

08/07/03 - East Midlands Grand Prix Race 8 - Milton Keynes

On Tuesday evening five members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Milton Keynes to take part in the 8th and last race in the East Midlands Grand Prix Series of Road Races. This race was well attended with 432 finishers. Times and positions as follows:- Helen Jones 47.16, (Senior Lady 7th) 269th; Jayne Gillard 47.48 (Lady 40 4th) 280th; Roger Wilkes 49.41 (Men 60 5th) 312th; Pauline Dable 52.57 (Lady 55 4th) 360th; Pam Wilkes 54.06 (Lady 60 2nd) 379th

13/07/03 - Wyre Forest Half Marathon

On Sunday and in the blistering heat Jane and John McNally tackled this difficult half Marathon which is held in the picturesque surroundings of the Wyre Forest, near Bewdley in Worcestershire. On a hot day which sapped the energy the cooler and shady trails and footpaths in the forest were greatly appreciated but it was still a very testing event. John McNally had a superb run completing in 1 hour 25 minutes and 51 seconds and taking the first veterans prize. Jane also had a good run to finish in 2 hours four minutes and 21 seconds.

17/07/03 - Summer League Race 5 - Ashorne Attack

Last Thursday evening 37 members of Kenilworth Runners and their guests held the fifth of this exciting eight race series and this time the venue was the lovely lanes in and around the village of Ashorne to which the race owes its name 'The Ashorne Attack'. Starting in the Village of Ashorne adjacent to the Village Hall the race headed out eastward towards the Fosse Way but turned right at the first road junction to pass along a mainly flat road into and through Little Morrell to Newbold Pacey and shortly after this small hamlet to turn right into the shady lane leading to Ashorne and the finish just outside the Village Hall. Although only 4 miles long the run was very fiercely contested with 4 runners playing their 'Joker' (which doubles the points gained) and as a result this has lead to yet another change in the overall leadership with Julie Bevan putting in a superb run to not only take the handicap and gain 50 points but doubling it with her joker and so take the overall leadership of the series with 265 points. However Julie is only 1 point clear of the 'B group' leader Lisa Rodda who is showing terrific form. With 5 races now complete and the final group placing taken from each runners five best times of their eight races the final positions could still change but it will take a supreme effort to catch Julie and Lisa. The group positions are as follows:-

GROUP A: Shelly Warren 201; Mick Morris 186; Lucy Nott 181

GROUP B: Lisa Rodda 264; Stewart Fenton 235; James Hartwright 226

GROUP C: John McNally 203; Richard Steel 189; Mick Williams 169

20/07/03 - Tour of Thameside

6 races in 7 days - not for the faint hearted - but Colin Dooling, John and Jane McNally and Pauline Dable decided to give it a go......The races are of varying distances and difficulty. First off is an 11 mile on the Sunday morning. Monday sees them then tackle a shorter 7 mile course, but this changes on Tuesday with a grueling 6 mile fell race. Wednesday brings a welcome relief as it is a rest day. Battle recommences on Thursday with the half marathon whilst on Thursday it must be cross country - 4.5 miles. For the final race on Friday the tour finishes off with a short 9 miler!

So how have our Runners done? See below. Overall John McNally finished 43rd in the mens event in a total time of 5:40:20; Colin 113th in 6:19:45. in the ladies competition, it was Pauline who just pipped Jane - 25th in 7:36:26 whilst Jane as 26th in 7:39:59

24/07/03 - Summer League Race 6 - Lowsenford Loiter

Last Thursday evening 30 members of Kenilworth Runners and their guests held the sixth race of this exciting eight race series and this time the venue was the lovely lanes in and around the village of Lowsenford. Without doubt the most testing of the eight races this one started in the village of Lowsenford and to show that the runners were not in for an easy time climbed steadily for one mile uphill towards the motorway and just before the motorway bridge turned left into Yew Tree Lane which for about two miles is a switch back of climbs and descents before turning left again to pass Copt Green and turn into the road that took the race out but with a splendid downhill to comfort the tired runners to finish outside the Fleur de lys Public House after 5 miles of tough running.

Martin Dorrill had a blistering run to finish in a remarkable 28 minutes and 58 seconds which beat the course record by 24 seconds and so securing the full 50 points. But this was not enough to disturb the present 'runaway' leader Lisa Rodda who is in sparkling form and beat her predicted time easily to put herself in the overall lead with 276 points. Julie Beven continued her excellent form to head the 'A' group with 275 points and keep the pressure on Lisa. With the Stewart Fenton of 'B' group her nearest challenger on 235 points it will take a superhuman effort to prevent the final award going one of these two lady stars particularly as there are only two races left.

The group positions are as follows:-

GROUP A: Julie Bevan 275; Shelly Warren 202; Tim Payne 191.

GROUP B: Stewart Fenton 235; James Hartwright 232; Roger Wilkes 220.

GROUP C: Richard Steel 220; John McNally 203; Mick Williams 189.

27/07/03 - Salford Quays Triathlon

With the ultra section now established - here's another one to try. Karen Hallas and Rebecca Kendall ventured north for this one. Starting early on Sunday morning, the first event was a 750 metre swim in the canal. This was followed by a 10K bike ride and to finish off - a 5K run. This was the first time they had entered a competition like this and although they successfully completed the course, no times/positions are available yet. But they will be back next year!
