- East Midlands Grand Prix - Race 4 Bedford 6 mile
Ona dry and reasonably cool Tuesday evening 3
members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Bedford to take part in the fourth event of this prestigious road race series. This time the distance was
6 miles. This series is proving more and more popular with 266 runners finishing which is an astonishing number for a midweek race. The
six mile course started in a very pleasant park near the race headquarters at The Mark Rutherford School, Bedford. After a mile through the suburbs
of Bedford the race entered a nice quite, but undulating lane which it followed for two miles before turning left to present the runners with
a long hill which was steep in places. The effort of climbing the hill was rewarded by a lovely long downhill back to the Park and after a small
detour in the Park to the finish line. Tom Dable lead Kenilworth Runners in with a splendid run in 42 minutes and 8 seconds to claim 6th place
in the over 55 category. He was followed by Mick Morris in 49.26 who claimed the 1st place in the over 65 category and holding off several
runners who had beaten him in the three previous events. Pauline Dable had an excellent run on a tough course to claim 4th place in the over
55 category. The next race of this series takes place at Weedon next week and a race with a wicked hill to conquer.

- Summer League Race 2 - Crackley Cracker
On Thursday evening with the weather warm and dry
41 members of Kenilworth Runners and 7 guests took part in the second of the Summer Handicap Races. This race is known to club members as
'Crackley Cracker' because it involves a lot of tough hills and is by no means an easy run. Unlike the previous race this race was a pursuit
race with each runner starting on a time based upon his handicap. Hence the runners who would normally start in the fast group 'C' started
well after the earlier runners from group 'A'. The race starts and finishes by the rough car park at Crackley Woods, Kenilworth and is composed
of two almost equal laps. Each lap takes the runners from the corner and up the hill by the Tennis Club and so to the Coventry Road. A sharp
turn into Upper Spring Lane gives a little breathing space before the right turn into Hollis lane and the long drag up to and past Dunns Pit Farm,
under the disused Railway Bridge and so back to Crackley Lane to face the imposing hill up to the start line and with the perturbing thought
that it all has to be done again! to reach the race distance of 5.2 miles. Again the ladies took the star role this time with Lisa Rodda
who with a superb run took over the much sort after title of overall leader with 97 points. Colin Dooling showed his potential by taking
the full 50 points by having the fastest handicap on the night.
Group A:Shelly Warren 91; Julie Bevan 89; Bob Griffiths 73.
Group B: Mike Cruickshank 92; Steve Jones 91; Jane McNally 81.
Group C: Richard Steel 93; John McNally 79; Gwyn Davies 78.
The next race in the Club Handicap series will be a 6 mile race which will be held on the 19th June 2003 starting at 7.30 pm from the road
opposite the Granville Arms, Barford.

- Dartmoor Discovery
Five Kenilworth Runners ably supported by their seconds
tackled the Dartmoor Discovery Ultra distance marathon. It covered 32.5 miles of the moor and included 5,000 feet of gruelling ascent
and descent in warm humid conditions! Some race! The seconds consisted of car and bike support with Annette Robinson, Karen Carter Sue Kincaid,
Sue Furlinc and Kathleen Hutchinson. For all the runners it was a new experience and in a field of 106 from all over the country they
did remarkably well at their first attempt. Sam Kincaid attacked the course with his usual determination and found himself amongst the
front-runners from the start. He finished the race in a well deserved 6th place, which included 2nd fastest newcomer and 3rd male veteran with
a time of 4 hours 15 minutes. Mary Joyce, competing in her first race at this distance gave an outstanding performance to finish 5th female in a time of
5 hours 15 minutes. Team manager/coach Gus Davidson was the next runner home; initially running to pace the team he put in a great performance
and returned a time of 5 hours 34 minutes. For Gwyn Davies it too was his first attempt at the distance and he finished in a creditable
time of 5 hours 36 minutes. Martin Carter, using the event as part of his training for a forthcoming 24-hour race next month came in next, exactly
to his plan. It was not a race for the faint hearted and posed personal challenges for all runners. The team returned jubilant but a little sore!

- 21st Two Castles Run
On a morning ideal for running, some 35 Runners
took part in the 21st running of this event. With record numbers of entrants expected, the start and finish were going to be crucial for
the smooth running of the event. At the end of the day it all went remarkably well with no major problems to worry about. In all there
were 1091 finishers, with the Runners getting 6 in the top 25. Mike Cahill and Gary Bradbury were running well until Fishponds Road when
they encountered one runner who appeared to have had one too many to drink, as his legs appeared to have gone to rubber. On closer inspection
it was worse than that and they had to support him to let him sit down. An ambulance was called, although it was in a police car that the injured
runner was transferred to the ambulance. Having ensured that the runner was okay, they proceeded to the finish in a time of just under the hour.
Jo Everatt took time out from her serious running to run in fancy dress, whilst Roland Smythe suffered from a tight calf muscle from the 2nd
kilometre, to "limp" round in 51 minutes - slightly slower than his expected 39 minutes!
This year each finisher was presented with a medal - makes a change from the normal piece of paper, and on top of that Hans Smits received a prize
for 1st vet, whilst John McNally and Simon Vine received 1st and 3rd prizes respectively for the over 45's.

- East Midlands Grand Priz Race 5 - Weedon 10K
The fifth race in the eight race East Midlands Grand
Prix Road Race series was held at Weedon, just south of Daventry, in Northamptonshire. Six members of Kenilworth Runners took part in the
race which is rated as the hardest in the series, a fact confirmed by all six after they had finished. This is a very popular race shown by the 324
finishers. The course can justly be claimed as picturesque for after four kilometres the road passes along a high plateau which gives
glorious views over the Northamptonshire countryside. Not that many runners noticed this for the climb up to the heights was long and steep. Even after
this climb the course was undulating with some long inclines but did provide a superb downhill finish, if that is, you forget the short painful
climb just before the end. Despite the hardship of the course Kenilworth Runners acquitted themselves well being lead in by Tom Dable who finished
in 45 minutes 8 seconds in 144th place overall and 8th over 55. He was followed by Jayne Gilliard (48.37, 216th, 6th lady over 40), Helen Jones
(48.52, 221st, 10th senior lady), Roger Wilkes (49.17, 229th, 4th over 60), Pauline Dable (54.06, 284th, 4th lady over 55) and Pam Wilkes (57.11,
308th, 2nd lady over 60).

- East Midlands Grand Prix Race 6 - Banbury 5
On Tuesday evening three members of Kenilworth
Runners travelled to Banbury to take part in the 6th race in the East Midlands Grand Prix Series of Road Races. This race was well attended
with 341 finishers. The five mile race started and finished near Banbury School. The course of the race, which would best be described as
undulating rather than hilly although there seemed more long uphill drags than those going downhill, headed out of Banbury towards the
village of Broughton where it turned left to head the A361 and return to the start. Tom Dable lead the Kenilworth trio in with an excellent
run to finish in 35 minutes 12 seconds in 171st place overall and 12th over 55. He was followed by Roger Wilkes in 37.44, 234th place overall
and 4th over 60 and Pam Wilkes who had a great run to finish in 2nd place in the ladies over 60 category and 320th overall with a time of 43.44.

- Summer League Race 3 - Barford Super Belter
The weather was pleasant on Thursday evening when
Kenilworth Runners held the 3rd of their Summer Handicap Series of road races. This time the venue was Barford and a course of 6 miles, known
in the club as 'The Barford Super Belter'. Such is the popularity of this series of races that 51 club members and guests turned out for the
event which starts and ends in Barford. The course starts in Wasperton Lane and follows this pleasant by road until it turns left by
the crematorium and so onto the Banbury Road to turn left again and over the M40 to reach Hareway Lane and so over the M40 again and back
to Barford and end in Wasperton Lane. This is the second time that the club have used this excellent course and Mike Johnson took the opportunity
to blow the previous course record away with a magnificent run to finish in 31 minutes and 47 seconds. However even this incredible effort
failed to give him the full 50 points which went to Colin Dooling who with great foresight played his joker (which doubles the points)
and so take to overall leadership of the series with 150 points. After three events the position in the groups is as follows:-
GROUP A: Shelly Warren 136; Julie Bevan 134; Mick Morris 115
GROUP B: Lisa Rodda 145; James Hartwright 141; Mike Cruickshank 136
GROUP C: Richard Steel 132; John McNally 125; Gwyn Davies 124

- East Midlands Grand Prix Race 7 - MarketHarborough
Six members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Leicestershire
to take part in the seventh of the eight East Midland Grand Prix series of road races. This took place near the picturesque village of Foxton,
noted for the magnificent series of canal locks, at the Prison that is located some mile or so to the east of the village. Conditions on the
night were near perfect with a slight cooling breeze and clear weather. The 5 mile course has a nice downhill in the first mile to reach
the village of Lubenham where it turns right along a leafy lane which despite its pleasant nature requires considerable effort to climb
steadily until it turns right again into a lane past the famous Foxton Locks and thence back to the start near the Prison. Tom Dable lead
the Kenilworth contingent with a fine run in 34 minutes and 32 seconds giving him 7th position in the over 55 age group and 150th overall.
Jayne Gilliard lead the Kenilworth Runners Ladies in with yet another excellent run in 37.58 and 8th in the Ladies over 40 category and 222nd
overall. The other finishers were as follows:- Roger Wilkes 38.02; 224th; Helen Jones 39.02; 237th; Pauline Dable 41.15; 262nd; Pam Wilkes
42.40; 272nd

- Summer League Race 4 - White Horse Gallop
The weather was superb on Thursday evening when
Kenilworth Runners held the 4th of their Summer Handicap Series of road races. This time the venue was Balsall Common and a course of 3 miles,
known in the club as 'The White Horse Gallop', because it starts and finishes outside the White Horse Public House and involves some cross country
running. Such is the popularity of this series of races that 42 club members and guests turned out for the event. The course starts by the
White Horse Public House and heads out along the A452 heading towards Kenilworth and turns left into Waste lane and so to Catchems Corner
where the race turns into a cross country for a mile or so following the public footpath to come out into Truggits Lane to again turn left
and head past Berkswell Station and to Meeting House Lane and after a right turn back into Waste Lane to the finish outside the White Horse.
Yet another change to the overall leader. On an evening when three runners beat there handicap times it was James Hartwright who had an excellent
run and so with best handicap time he claimed all 50 points to take the overall lead. Group 'A' remains unchanged but Colin Dooling and
Roger Wilkes have come into the frame in group 'B' and in group 'C' John McNally has taken over the lead. With only 49 points separating
the runners in all groups and with four more races to go it only needs one of the leaders to beat their handicap and play their joker
to leap into a convincing lead. The group positions are as follows
GROUP A: Shelly Warren 174; Julie Bevan 165;Mick Morris 161
GROUP B: Lisa Rodda 184; Colin Dooling 166;Roger Wilkes 166
GROUP C: John McNally 159; Richard Steel 145; Gwyn Davies 139

- StourbridgeStumble 10K
On a lovely summers evening Kenilworth Lady Runner
Jayne Gilliard went to Stourbridge to take part in this unusual multi terrain race. The course was a true multi terrain event with a variety
of different surfaces for the runner. There were many stiles and footpaths some sandy sections and even included a golf course and playing
field as well as pleasant country lanes on the outskirts of Stourbridge. Jayne had an excellent run completing the race in 49 minutes and 23 seconds.
