-The NeolithicMarathon
On Sunday four intrepid members of Kenilworth Runners
travelled to Wiltshire to tackle one of the most challenging marathon and long distance walks - The Neolithic Marathon so named because
it starts at the Avebury standing stones and ends at Stonehenge and covers a route familiar to ancient man. The event is now in it's fifteenth
year and is called The Sarsen Trail and over 2000 people took part, either walking or running the full marathon or half marathon distance,
on a beautiful Sunday morning. Pam and Roger Wilkes chose to walk the full marathon distance and so started in the early morning at 7.15
am. Mary Joyce chose to run the half marathon distance whilst Annette Robinson opted to walk the half marathon. The route leaves Avebury
and quickly pass Silbury Hill the oldest man-made mound in the UK, and then climbs above the Vale of Pewsey and Avon Valley where stunning views
abound and heads out on the ancient fortification, 35 miles long, called the Wansdyke which dates from Saxon times and where King Alfred fought
the Danes. It then passes Rybury Camp an Iron Age Fort, and drops down to the Vale of Pewsey where there was a forest in Roman times and
enters a lowland between Marlborough Downs and Salisbury Plain. It passes on to the steepest climb of the day at Redhorn Hill and the start
of Salisbury Plain with magnificent views across Avon valley to Boscombe Down. From here it follows the ridgeway track on the eastern fringe of
the downs as most the plain is under MOD ownership and finishes at Stonehenge. Pam and Roger found it a most enjoyable walk with an added bonus
on completing the route in 6 hours 46 minutes, an excellent time for such a tough course. Mary Joyce, who ran the Half marathon also had an
excellent run completing the 13.1 miles in 107 minutes.

- East Midlands Grand Prix Race 1 Silverstone 10K
On a cool but pleasant evening nine members of
Kenilworth Runners, four ladies and five men, travelled to the Silverstone Motor Race Stadium in Northamptonshire to compete in the Silverstone
10 kilometre race which is the first of 8 races that make up this excellent series. This race always attracts a good turnout and on the evening
there were 938 finishers. The race started on the grid where normally only high speed motors are to be found but on Tuesday evening it was
to be human effort that covered two complete circuits taking in all the same twists and turns top drivers experience. Whilst the course appeared
to be flat there were two steady inclines near the end of each lap which provided a stimulating view as the pit stop was reached. The sign for
a 'pit stop' beckoned the end of the race which finished in the area normally associated with the hectic changing of wheels etc.! Kenilworths
stars on the night were Pam Wilkes, Pauline Dable and Jayne Gillard all of whom had excellent runs to finish 1st, 3rd and 9th in their respective
age categories. Matthew Kingston Lee lead the men in with a superb run to finish in 111th position overall whilst Roland Smythe also had
a good run to finish under the magic 40 minute mark in 149th position overall.

- East Midlands Grand Prix Race 2 Rugby 6
Nine members of Kenilworth Runners took part in the
second race of this superb series of road races, The Provident Rugby 6 Mile Road Race. The course could not have been more different from that
used for the first race on Silverstone Motor Race Track. Gone were the stands and pit stops to be replaced by pleasant country lanes and
steep climbs. The race started on the road just outside St Andrews Rugby Club in Ashlawn Road, Rugby. It headed along Ashlawn Road to turn
left into the road to Barby when after a long downhill and crossing over the M45 the lane reached Cart Horse Hill to turn left part way
up the Hill into Barby Lane. This lane took the race back over the M45 to the Hillmorton Road and so back into Ashlawn Road and to the
finish which was on the field at the Rugby Club.
Once more the ladies were the stars on the night with Pam Wilkes picking up first place in her category for the second time in the series and
Helen Jones, Jayne Gilliard and Pauline Dable picking up 4th, 5th and 5th positions in their respective categories. For the men Mick Morris
managed to force himself into 3rd place in the over 65 category.

- Winter League Presentation Evening
On Friday May 16th, Kenilworth Runners held their
Winter Presentation evening at the Wardens Cricket Club, Kenilworth. A large number of members turned up to enjoy an evening of good food,
bingo and a quiz and see various members awarded their prizes for achievements in the Winter Road Race Handicap League as well as for the
Winters Cross Country Events. It is traditional that the final results from the last race are a kept a close secret but this year nobody in
the Club had any doubt who would take the award of Overall Winner. Leading well before the last race at Honiley and for the second year running!
Tim Payne thoroughly deserved to take this award which he did with a staggering total of 305 points. He achieved this by his steady running
on some tough courses and kept himself well ahead of his rivals for most of the series. There were close finishes in all three groups
with Robin Groves (286 points) just beating Mick Morris (281) to 'A' group first place. The tussle for 'B' group was even closer with
Stef Shillington (297) just getting in front of Roger Wilkes (295) to take first place. However the competition was at its most ferocious in
'C' group where the first and second runners both finished on 296 points. Accordingly a joint award was made to Roland Smythe and Richard
Steel (296 each). Overall the top places were separated by a mere 9 points which reflects the quality of the competition and the excellence
of the courses chosen by Race Organiser, Roger Wilkes. Awards were also made for the Cross Country Runner of the Year and The Club Member
of the Year. These were chosen by Club members by ballot on the evening; Roland Smythe won the Cross Country Runner of the Year and Gary
Bradbury won the Club Member of the Year. Both were chosen unanimously and richly deserving their award. Richard Elliot received his medal
from the Gloucester Cross Country League for 1st Veterans Man Over 50, Pam Wilkes received a medal for 1st Lady Over 60 and husband Roger
2nd Veteran Over 60 whilst Pauline Dable won 1st Lady Over 50. Lisa Rodda, Celia Mills, Pam Wilkes, Jane McNally, Jayne Gilliard, Pauline
Dable and Erna Gerber received a medal for 2nd Ladies team in this league. Awards were also made to all club members who won best handicap
for an individual race in the Winter League and a special award was made to all those members who ran in the Birmingham league races in the
Birmingham Cross Country Race this season, where in the last race at Wolverhampton the Club were promoted to Division 2 for the first time in
their history.

- East Midlands Grand Prix - Race 3 Rockingham 4.75 miles
On Wednesday evening six members of Kenilworth
Runners travelled to Rockingham Speedway Racing Circuit, Corby, to compete in the third race of this competitive series of races. This was
the shortest of the races so far, after 6.2 miles at Silverstone, 6 miles at Rugby this time the distance was 5 miles but this attracted
a large number of runners with 349 finishers. (In fact due to a error, the course was only 4.75 miles long!) The evening was very wet with
driving rain although the rain eased to a fine mist by the time the race started but a wind got up to discomfort the runners on this exposed
course. The two lap course lay over the circuit normally used by fast cars and motor bicycles and was mainly flat but with some steady inclines.
The surface of the course was excellent and with the weather conditions combined to make this an excellent opportunity for fast times.
James Hartwright lead the Kenilworth contingent in to finish in 31 minutes and 18 seconds, just ahead of Tom Dable (31.38). Kenilworth's Ladies,
Jayne Gilliard and Helen Jones were close all through the race but Jayne finished just 4 seconds ahead of Helen in 35.21. Pauline Dable and Mick
Morris took the honours in the categories with Pauline finishing in 4th position in the Ladies o/55 and Mick Morris claiming 2nd position in
the Mens o/65.
The complete details of the finishers are as follows:-
James Hartwright 31.18secs; 134th; Tom Dable 31.38secs; 142nd; Jayne Gilliard 35.21secs; 236th; Helen Jones 35.25secs; 238th; Mick Morris
37.17secs; 275th; Pauline Dable 38.33secs; 294th.

- Cotswold Hilly Hundred
Kenilworth entered 4 teams in this annual outing around
the Cotswolds. For the first time we had a full team of lady runners. They and the C team started at the very, very early time of 5 in the morning.
The B team started at 6, whilst the A team started at 7. There were about 16 teams taking part, so for us to contribute some 25% of the field
was no mean feat. The A team had high hopes of beating the Club record this year and looked to be on course not only to do that but also
win the competition outright. With a lead of over six minutes over Leamington at the end of leg 4 they were well positioned to do just
that. Then, for whatever reason, the wrong route was taken. It was not until the seconds couldn't find the runner on the expected route that the
mistake was spotted. By this time the damage had been done. Still, if you read the report in the Weekly News the week after you would
be forgiven for thinking that we were never in the lead!

- Arnesby 5 mile
Arnesby is in rural Leicestershire approx 9 miles due south of Leicester city centre. They
have held a traditional May Fayre at the village for many years, and attract a large number of visitors. In recent times they introduced a
cross country race open to serious athletes and fun runners alike. Prizes are awarded. All who have taken part in previous years regard
this whole event (Fayre and race) as an excellent day out. To find out if this was true, Roland Smythe travelled the short distance up the M69.
The course is run over farm land and every field has at least one stile to get over. You can get through quite a few fields in 5 miles! I
lost count after about the 20th style. It is a great race - even if there were only about 50 runners - and most of them were from OWLS.
The fayre takes over the whole village and that in itself is also worth going along to see - the beer tent is well worth a visit. Oh yes,
I finished 12th in 33:58

- Boddington 10K
On Bank Holiday Monday three members of KenilworthRunners travelled to Boddington in Northamptonshire
to take part in the annual ten kilometre road race. The course takes in the villages of Upper and Lower Boddington along pleasant country
lanes which are in the main flat and conducive to a fast running. The course was obviously to the Kenilworth Runner's taste as they came
back with two prizes. Jane McNally had a storming run in 48 minutes and 30 seconds to, not only, beat her previous personal best but to take
the 1st veterans prize! John Dagnan also had a superb run to finish in 39.58 minutes and take 1st veteran prize over 50. John McNally
just edged in front of John Dagnan to finish in 38.55 minutes.

- Summer League Race 1 - Catchems Corner
On Thursday evening with the weather warm and close
38 members of Kenilworth Runners and 5 visitors took part in the first of the Summer Handicap Races. This race is known to club members as
'Catchems Corner' for no less reason than it passes this hamlet half way around the 4.5 mile course. Starting outside the Peeping Tom Public
House on Cromwell Lane the runners head off almost due south along Cromwell Lane turning right into Hodgetts Lane. After a mile or so
they turn left at the cross roads into Waste Lane and so to Catchems Corner and left into Windmill Lane. After a short distance another
left turn is taken into Hob Lane and finally into Cromwell Lane and the finish outside the Peeping Tom. This is mainly a flat run but with
a sharp climb up the hill before Burton Green Farm.
The Ladies were the stars on the night with Jo Everatt taking the full 50 points with a superb run to put herself into overall leadership. Julie
Bevan collected 49 points for an excellent run and put herself top of the 'A' group.
The position in the groups is as follows:-
GROUP A: Julie Bevan 49; Shelly Warren 46; Joyce Hatwood 45.
Group B: Mike Cruickshank 48; Lisa Rodda 45; Steve Jones 44;
Group C: Richard Steel 47; Gary Bradbury 43; John McNally 38.
With such a large number of club members keen to compete in this excellent series of eight races the competition is going to be hot and
no doubt positions will change as the series develops.
