Twenty members of Kenilworth Runners took part in either
the annual Stratford Marathon or Half Marathon yesterday and as a result continued to pick up prizes at this prestigious race. The weather
during the race was cool with a blustery wind and in these reasonable running conditions Kenilworth Runners men retained the Warwickshire Half Marathon
team title for the fifth consecutive year. The fastest four runners count in this event and it was Wayne Oakes who lead them in with a superb
run to finish in 79 minutes 48 seconds in 11th position. He was followed by Mick Williams (81:26, 19th), Simon Vine (83:46, 27th) and Matthew
Kingston-Lee (84:57, 38th). Kenilworth Runners stars on the day were Wayne Oakes, who not only lead the team in to win the team award but also
won the bronze medal in the Warwickshire Half Marathon Championship which was an outstanding achievement given the high quality of the competition,
Pauline Dable who tackled the tough Marathon challenge of 26.2 miles and put in a most impressive performance by finishing in 4 hours 25 minutes
and 12 seconds and new member Karen Holland who cracked the magic 100 minute boundary in the Half. Anybody who has been around the route
of the race will appreciate that it is not an easy course. The race stars outside the Shakespeare Theatre in Waterside. The route takes the race
once around the Town Centre before heading out along the Evesham Road to Stratford race course where it turns into the road to Luddington and
after going through the village turns up the hill to come out onto the Evesham Road again. Two left turns brings the race to the start
of the long two mile drag through Welford on Avon up the hill and sharply down to turn left into the lane leading to Milcote and so onto
the Greenway. At the end of the Greenway the race passes up the by-pass and back to enter the Park and so to the finish. Marathon runners
go around this course twice.
