02/03/03 - The Treat Multi-Terrain

Two of Kenilworth Runners intrepid lady members tackled this tough 8 mile cross country race in the beautiful surroundings of the Wyre Forest. Running over varied conditions including several hills, sandy tracks and on footpaths with the occasional relief of a road section. On this lovely Sunday morning Jayne Gillard and Celia Mills both had excellent runs with Celia finishing in 60 minutes and 18 seconds to be second lady overall and Jayne only just behind her in 65.42 in being 9th lady. Both very excellent performances.

02/03/03 - Flora London Silverstone Half Marathon

Seven Runners made it down to Silverstone for this the first running of Half Marathon - in preparation for the London Marathon in April. The course runs over three laps of which the first and last are on the circuit itself, whilst the middle lap - some 7 miles - runs around all the service roads.

With the course open to the elements the weather on the day was bitterly cold and windy which did not make for a very enjoyable run, however, Sam Kincaid was the first Runner back in a time of 1:22:01 for 52nd place. He also took the 3rd place for MV40 category. Shaun Lester making one of his first appearances in a Kenilworth vest finished 861st in a time of 1:38:33.

Other Runners competing on the day were - Bob Griffiths 2296th in 1:50:22. Keith Blake 2609th 1:52:48; Alex Preston 2656th 1:53:11; Gill Tugman 4585 2:09:15 and Julie Bevan 4743rd 2:10:37

02/03/03 - The Marie Curie Daffodil 10 kilometre & Half Marathon

Five members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Caste Abbey a village in Northamptonshire just east of Northampton to take part in a 10 kilometre and 13.1 mile half marathon. Both races started and finished in the village of Caste Abbey with both courses taking in the villages of Yardley Hastings, Easton Maudit and Grendon which lie in some picturesque but hilly country which made both races tough on the runners and in particular the finish which offers a steep hill near the finish. Mother and daughter team of Pam and Helen Wilkes had excellent runs finishing the 10 kilometre race in 49 minutes and 58 seconds and 56.08 respectively.

Mary Joyce, Jane and John McNally ran in the half marathon with Jane having a superb run finishing in 1 hour 48 minutes which was a personal best for this distance by a massive 6 minutes on a challenging course! Mary Joyce also had an excellent run finishing in 1.44, with John McNally completing a steady run in 1.36, despite having run in the cross country at Wolverhampton the day before.

02/03/03 - Milford 21 Mile

John Woodrow tackled this unusual race in Cannock along with 250 other runners. Described as flat and undulating it was anything but! Running mainly through trails and on stoney paths it only had at least 6 steep climbs! Still, undeterred, John completed the course in 3 hours and 5 minutes.

09/03/03 - Gloucester 20

Five members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Frampton on Seven in Gloucestershire to take part in an arduous 20 mile race. As at Silverstone the wind was very strong which made this scenic but hilly course all the more difficult. Tom Dable lead the Kenilworth team in with a splendid run finishing in 2 hours 27 minutes. He was followed by John McNally in 2.30 and Jayne McNally (3.04). Kristy Dable ran with her mother Pauline to complete in 3 hours 38 minutes which was a splendid effort from both and in particular Kristy for who this was the first time she has tackled the distance and such a daunting course. This will give her great confidence to tackle the forthcoming London Marathon.

16/03/03 - Ashby 20

With the London Marathon looming up in the near future Kenilworth Runners Mick Cruickshank, Lou Frondella and Mick Williams travelled to Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire to take part in one of the toughest long distance road races, the Ashby 20. Despite the tough hilly nature of the course Lou Frondella had a superb run finishing in 2 hours 6 minutes in 20th position overall out of a field of 460 finishers. Mick Williams followed him closely with another great run of 2.07 finishing in 21st position. Mick Cruickshank also had a superb run to finish in 2.19.25 in 78th position overall. These three good runs confirm that they are all in good form and very ready for the Big Day in London.

16/03/03 - Banbury 15

A tough country course taking in the villages of Little & Great Bourton & Cropedy saw the Dable family on their travels again. After early fog the day gave way to bright spring sunshine with a cooling bite in the air and perfect running conditions. Pauline Dable. 2.19 Tom & Kristy Dable 2.32

16/03/03 - Winter League Race 7 - Shillington's Shally

On Sunday morning 17 members of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Norton Lindsey to take part in the penultimate event in the Winter league which is known to members as 'Shillington's Shally' after Stef Shillington who first proposed this excellent rural event.

The course for this six mile race starts and ends outside The New Inn public house in the village of Norton Lindsey and proceeds downhill to Snitterfield where after two sharp right hand turns the course follows the mainly uphill road through Wolverton and to the cross roads near Langley Green before turning right to return to Norton Lindsey.

Yvonne Shillington set the pace with a superb run to beat her handicap and claim the full 50 points which great foresight she doubled by playing her joker. With only one race to go this was the time for the leader to extend the lead and Tim Payne wasted no time in doing this. with yet another steady run. He has now extended his overall lead over his next challenger, Stef Shillington, to 12 points and looks unbeatable. However the group positions are clearly wide open with only 7 points separating the first two in 'A' group where Chairman Robin Groves overtook Mick Morris, whilst both the leaders in 'B' and 'C' groups are separated by a few points.

The positions are as follows:-

Group A: Robin Groves 279; Mick Morris 272; Bob Griffiths 236.

Group B: Stef Shillington 288; Roger Wilkes 286; Jayne Gillard 285.

Group C: Roland Smythe 288; Richard Steel 284; John McNally 208.

The last race of the series takes place on Sunday 30th March 2003 starting just opposite the Honiley Court Hotel at 11.00pm. This is a 6.75 mile race over a splendid course.

23/03/03 - Inter-Counties Half Marathon Championships

Glorious sunny day, warm conditions, no wind. A delightful country course. Tom Dable 1.28.40 Pauline Dable 1.54.33 Kristy Dable 2.04.08.

23/03/03 - Draycote 5

Jayne Gillard ran in the Draycote 5 mile event on Sunday and managed a personal best for the course. With a glorious sunny morning the course is around Draycote water, which is actually undulating, not flat. Jayne's time was 37:22 an improvement on her run in 2001 when she recorded 39:03.

30/03/03 - Winter League Race 8 - Honiley Superhoof

OnSunday morning 20 members of Kenilworth Runners met to take part in the final race of the series which is known to club members as the 'Honiley Super Hoof' so named because it starts in the lane leading to Honiley and it is the longest of two club races that start at the same place. The race starts and ends in the lane opposite the Honiley Court Hotel and then proceeds through Honiley towards Beausale turning right at theT-junction along the lane and after a left turn the race passes through Haseley Knob and heads off to Haseley Green when after a comforting downhill a sharp left turn takes the race through Waste Green and Beausale and back to the start. On a bright sunny morning the race had a special significance for it would establish the final league positions and in particular who has won the prestigious overall prize for best handicap score. The photograph shows the runners at the start with the likely candidates, Roland Smythe (number 14), Stef Shillington (next to Roland), Tim Payne (number 30 the present overall leader and last years winner) and Robin Groves (number 29) in front. It would take some run to overtake Tim but we shall not know the outcome until final positions are announced at the AGM.

On the day Richard Steel was the first man back with a superb run but it was new club member Colin Dooling who took the full 50 points on the day..
