01/01/03 - Resolution Relay

On a truly miserable day we still managed to start the year in some sort of style. Twelve teams in varying degrees of fancy dress made their way around the two and a half mile circuit in a gusty wind and at times heavy rain. Special mention to Colin Bricher, who made the journey all the way from Northampton to take part.

The idea - if you didn't know by now is based on two runners - preferably in fancy dress - to take it in turns to run one lap of the Crackley Cracker. Based on the handicap system - controlled admirably by Tim Payne - the aim is to all finish at the same time. It never works, but it is good fun trying to catch up with the fairies, Blues Brothers, Tom Jones et al.

This years winners were Robert & Denise Cheetham who mastered the course a lot quicker than the rest of us - they walked off with the Aileen McQuarrie trophy, whilst it was Roger and Pam Wilkes who took the prize for best fancy dress - as Lubi Loo and Andy Pandy.

Afterwards it was back to Mike & Jill Cahill's house for the traditional first BBQ of the year!

05/01/03 - Chelmsley Wood Grand Prix Series

A large section of the normal monthly course was ruled unsafe due to icy conditions. The revamped course measuring approximately 8km instead of the usual 10km was over 4 laps of the lake. Tom Dable completed the course in 32 mins 10 secs. whilst Pauline Dable achieved 40 mins 55 secs.

12/01/03 - Roman 9

18 Runners turned up for this traditional start of the year road race. In a record field it was Lou Frondella who stormed home in 11th place in a time of 52:51. Thankfully conditions were not as bad as experienced by the cross country runners the previous day - although it was bitterly cold to begin with. Conditions underfoot were good - with care only having to be taken at the bottom of Loxley Hill with the sharp left turn taking you back into Stratford. It was good to see some of our new members out - Sandra Burt (75:18 - 420th); Jane Pithie (80:53); Julie Bevan (90:04) and Lyn Jaggard (91:27).

Lou was some 5 minutes ahead of second Runner, Roland Smythe, who just for a change managed to hold off the challenge of John McNally, who in turn was only just ahead of Stan Alexander. All four managed to get under the hour. Jane McNally produced the best performance of the day though - beating her previous best time for the event by a massive 10 minutes!

26/01/03 - Winter League Race 4 - Beausale Banditt

On Sunday twenty nine members of Kenilworth Runners turned out for the fourth race in Winter Handicap League Race Series at Beausale, welcoming a number of new members for whom this was their first race of the series. Conditions were ideal for road racing, mild and damp and the race was started with the 'A' group going followed by the 'B' & 'C' group five minutes later.

The four mile course took the runners from the start at Beausale Cross Roads to Rouncil Lane and to Waste Green where they turned right into the lane to Glebe Farm and then sharp right up the steady climb to Haseley Green and so to Haseley Knob and with a right turn to return to the start. With running conditions ideal many members played their jokers (this doubles the points on the day) but this proved unwise for some as several members beat their predicted handicap time.

Roland Smythe still retains the overall lead in the series with an excellent run despite yesterday's cross country race but it was new member Julie Bevan who took the 50 point maximum with a fine first race. Mick Morris dislodged last years overall winner Tim Payne to lead the 'A' group but Stef Shillington and Roland Smythe still lead 'B' and 'C' groups respectively.

However as the table shows there is very little in it and with four races left the picture could be very different at the end.

Group A: Mick Morris 222; Tim Payne 192; Bob Griffiths 180.

Group B: Stef Shillington 229; Roger Wilkes 223; Mike Cruickshank 176.

Group C Roland Smythe 235; Richard Steel 175; John McNally 169.

The next race takes place on the 9th February 2003 starting at 11.00 am at the 2nd Cross Road from the Tipperary Inn along Table Oak Lane where it joins Fen End Road.

26/01/03 - Slaughterford 9

On Sunday 26th January Tom & Pauline Dable travelled down to Slaughterford for a 9 mile Multi Terrain race. Situated near Corsham,Wiltshire, it was a difficult course, very muddy with a severe climb in the last half mile. Tom Dable managed 1.13 and Pauline Dable 1.38
