01/12/02 - Full Monty Cute 8

Roland Smythe & John Jones made the journey down to Somerset for this 9.5 miles multi terrain race - a mini version of the Grizzly. The 8 refers to the 8 steep climbs that are on the route - the majority of which are impossible to run up. Despite the prospect of gales and rain in the south, the day was remarkably sunny - although the recent rain had made many parts of the course very muddy and slippery. In a field of over 200 runners, Roland Smythe completed the course in a time of 1:19 for 36th place, whilst John Jones - taking part for the first time - finished in 1:59.

08/12/02 - Chelmsley Wood10K

Tom & Pauline Dable took part in this race in temperatures of 3 degrees Centigrade and a biting wind. Thrown in for good measure were 8 knee deep river crossings in icy water and 6 steep climbs. Tom Dable took 44mins 45 secs. Pauline Dable 55.15 secs . to complete the course

15/12/02 - Mortimer Forest Hill Race

Mike Johnson tackled this difficult race and achieved 3rd position for his efforts. The race was at Overton, Ludlow and included.1600 ft of ascent. The conditions were cold, damp, very misty and very muddy. Along with Mike there were also other good performances from: Julian Tombs 1hr 29mins 57 secs; Celia Mills 1hr 30mins 16 secs; Tom Dable 1 hr 33mins 41secs and Pauline Dable 2hr 09mins 11secs.

15/12/02 - Wlinter League Race 3 - Hampton Lucy Lurker

Richard Steel was the first back today in 30:13 for this 5 mile race around Hampton Lucy. With the weather wet and miserable, not to mention cold! Only 14 made it out to the other side of Warwick - so points should be there for the grabbing. Stan Alexander was some 3 minutes behind Richard with Mike Cruickshank a further minute behind Stan. The Hatwoods - after their mid week recce of the course - came in at the back, with Joyce edging out Ted by some 30 seconds. After the race a good drink was had at the Boars Head by a nice open fire!

Two new lady runners were very welcome and both, Julie Bevan and Lucy Nott, had excellent runs on what is known to be quite a tough course. The race started on the main road in Charlecote by the Park and after a few yards turned left into Charlecote Road and so along to reach Hampton Lucy and turn left along Stratford Road until the tee junction is reached. A right turn into Hatton Bank Lane and past Hatton Bank Farm where the runners were beginning to feel the effect of the long pull up to the tee junction and so right into Snitterfied Street and so back and through Hampton Lucy into Charlecote Road and the finish line just before the tee junction. Jayne Gillard also had a superb run to lead the ladies in with a time of 37 minutes 46 seconds. Being a handicap league leading the field does not always return full points and today it was Tim Payne from 'A' group who took the full 50 points and the 'A' group lead. With many runners still to play their joker (doubles the points for one race) the title can go to any runner. Roland Smythe still leads the League after three races although it was his turn to marshal this race but obtained 45 points for that duty and Stef Shillington with yet another impressive run was just behind him. However both need to watch Tim Payne, last years winner, who has yet to play his joker. The positions after three races are:-

GROUP A Tim Payne 143 points Mick Morris 142 points Bob Griffith 135 points Robin Groves 135 points

GROUP B Stef Shillington 183 points Stan Alexander 133 points Mike Cruickshank 129 points

GROUP C Roland Smythe 193 points Richard Steel 130 points John McNally 83 points

The fourth event of the series is 'The Beausale Bandit' a 4 mile race that has been rescheduled due to clashes with other events and will now be held on Sunday 26th January 2003 starting by the cross roads in Beausale at 11.00 am.

25/12/02 - Christmas Day Run

No day it would seem, is sacred to the committed runner. As ever, Tom and Pauline and Mick Williams made the annual trip to the pub - the Emscote Tavern in Warwick - for this 3 mile festive day run. Not to be outdone, Richard Steel, John McNally, Jane McNally, Jayne Gillard, John Jones, Lynne Jaggard, Sean Lonergan and Jane Pithie all took time out from preparing the Christmas dinner to endulge in a lung burning charge around the streets of Warwick.

26/12/02 - Barow on soar Handicap Race

Three members of Kenilworth Runners took part in this undulating six mile road race at Barrow on Soar, Leicestershire. The day was cold and bright but with a strong blustery wind which made the run difficult particularly in the last six miles. Pauline Dable finished in 51 minutes and 6 seconds and husband Tom in 42 minutes. Colin Bricher who travels from Northampton to compete for the club finished in 48 minutes and 47 seconds.

29/12/02 - Massey Christmas Five

Four members of Kenilworth runners took part in the annual five mile Massey race. Richard Elliott was the club star on the day as he took 1st place in the over fifty group where he was up against stern opposition. He finished in 29 minutes and 5 seconds. Tom Dable finished in 34 minutes and 8 seconds with Pauline Dable in 41 minutes and 5 seconds. Richard Steel also ran but his time is not available.

29/12/02 - Huncote Hash

Two members of Kenilworth Runners took part in the Huncote Hash a six mile cross country race with every variation of types of mud; sticky mud, soft mud, wet mud to mention just a few. But this course added other natural obstacles to the selection of mud: It had one of the steepest climbs in Leicestershire as well as 150 yards of waist deep water and to make the day a sand quarry with - yes you have guessed it sandy mud! Starting outside the Leisure Centre with the rain gently falling on the 200 competitors in the village of Huncote in Leicestershire the six mile course proceeded across a soggy field with copious areas of surface water entering a pleasant little muddy coppice from which it emerged onto a narrow track which was covered in thick gelatinous mud. This was the theme of the course for the next two miles until Croft Hill was reached which involved a sharp climb to the Ordnance Survey marker and back down the other side to retrace the muddy footpaths over the fields. Abruptly at about four miles runners take a sharp step down into a swollen stream about one metre deep. Frozen feet are the main feature of the run in which also involves a difficult crossing of the sand quarry and back to the finish by the Leisure Centre. The reward for all the effort involved was a welcome cup of hot soup and a piece of bread. Stan Alexander had a superb run in 43 minutes and 1 second and Mick Morris followed him in 66 minutes and 41 seconds.
