On a very pleasant Sunday morning an excellent
turn out of 25 members of Kenilworth Runners took part in the second race in the Winter Series of handicap road races. This time the venue
was Balsall Common where the race, known in the Club as 'The White Horse Chase' so named as it starts outside the White Horse Public
House and being four and half miles long tends to be a bit of a 'Chase'! The runners leave the White Horse and head for the traffic lights
where they turn left and along the B4101 past Catchems Corner until the cross roads is reached. A left turn takes them along Hodgett's Lane
to reach Carol Green and turn left again to climb slightly along Truggits Lane under the railway bridge at Berkswell Station until another
left turn into Meeting House Lane. The whole length of this Lane is covered and with two right turns the finish line is reached, again
outside the White Horse. After a very competitive race in which several runners exceeded their set handicap times Roland Smythe took the full
50 points with a blistering run and so preserved his overall lead. However, Roland will be aware that the impressive Stef Shillington is hot
on his heals after yet another excellent run. They will both notice that last years overall winner, Tim Payne, is now in the reckoning and
a number of runners have still to play their 'Jokers' which will double up their points tally. So it is all to play (or run) for.
The position after this second race is as follows:-
GROUP A: Mick Morris 98 points; Bob Griffith 94 points; Tim Payne 93 points
GROUP B: Stef Shillington 134 points; Sean Lonergan 96 points; Mike Cruickshank 90 points; Stan Alexander 90 points
GROUP C: Roland Smythe 150 points; Richard Steel 85 points; John McNally 83 points
The third race in this competitive series is a 5 mile race to be held on Sunday the 15th December 2002 starting near the junction in
Charlcote by Charlcote Park at 11.00am.

- Clowne Half Marathon
Two Kenilworth Runners, Jane McNally and John Jones,
travelled to Derbyshire to take part in the tough Clowne Half Marathon. Clowne is a small Town about 30 miles south east of Sheffield
(By the way Clowne is pronounced ‘Cloon’ as Jane was rather huffily told by one of the locals!) and despite the name this was no fun event.
The day was cold and rather foggy and the course was very hilly but Jane had a superb run finishing in 1 hour 54 minutes and 23 seconds with John
coming in just behind her in a very creditable 2 hours and 3 minutes. For Jane this was made all the more pleasurable for she managed to
set her personal best on a very hard course.
