03/11/02 - New York Marathon

Kenilworth Runner Gywn Davies made his fourth journey 'over the pond' to New York City to take part in the 30th running of this internationally acclaimed Marathon. No less than 30,000 entries had been received and Gwyn had a superb run finishing in an impressive 4,737th place which is a credit to his stamina in this demanding event. His time was 3 hours 37 minutes and 43 seconds.

03/11/02 - Chelmsley Wood Grand Prix

Despite an exhausting cross country race the previous day Tom Dable still had the energy left to tackle this tough 5 mile road race in Birmingham and achieve the good time of 33 minutes and 54 seconds

10/11/02 - Winter League Race 1 - Chesterton Chafer

Even on a damp, cold, November day Chesterton is a magical place with its ancient Church standing proud on a grassy platform and pleasant fields and lakes to be seen in all directions making it an ideal venue for the start and finish of Kenilworth Runners first Winter League Race, known to club members as the 'Chesterton Chaffer' for reasons that become evident shortly after the start of the race.

On Sunday morning 14 members took part in this six mile race and knew that they were in for a tough time. The race started by the Churchyard Gate and proceeded slightly downhill towards Chesterton Green and past the small collection of house and so to the junction of the road at Windmill Hill Farm. The sign should have warned the runners that hard work was close at hand for they had to make the stiff climb up and past Chesterton Windmill to turn right at the 'T' junction onto the road to Harbury which involved several other small climbs. Passing through Harbury the race turned right again and so slightly uphill again to the 'Five Way junction' to turn sharp right and so back past the Windmill where even the tirdest runners could not fail to admire the beautiful view across Warwickshire.

The race returned through Chesterton and so back to the finish. The race series is based upon a handicap principle with each runner having a set time to complete the race and points are awarded according to their time in comparison with their handicap. A 'joker' can be played which doubles the points for that race. The joker can only be used once in the eight race series. Roland Smythe with a powerful run lead the way and so took the maximum 50 points and with great foresight decided to play his joker and so doubled his total. With this advantage in the first race and with his fine running he is going to be difficult to dislodge from the top, but there are a lot of runners keen to try to do this in the next seven races!

A Group:Mick Morris 48; Bob Griffiths 46; Jane McNally 45.

B Group: Sean Lonergan 96; Stef Shillington 94; Jayne Gillard 45.

C Group: Roland Smythe 100; John McNally 45; Richard Steel 45 .

16/11/02 - Pen man Mawr Fell Race

Despite putting in a superb performance at Mansfield on the Saturday Martin Dorrill still travelled to Wales to take part in the hilly Llandudno ten mile road race and finished in the excellent time of 57 minutes and 56 seconds.

17/11/02 - Heartshill Heartbreaker

The Heartbreaker has always been a race that Kenilworth Runners like to compete in. On Sunday ten members and two prospective members travelled to Hartshill near Nuneaton to take part once more in this tough 10 mile cross country race. They joined a good field of about 200 runners. The Hartshill course is based upon the Hartshill Country Park. Starting in the pleasant grounds of Hartshill School the route follows footpaths to Hartshill Woods where it weaves through the woodland until coming out and heading for the canal over which it passes twice and so returns via a long muddy climb up a hill back into the woods and so back to Hartshill school. Throughout the course was muddy and in some places it had surface water which helped to cool overheated feet! This is an ideal course for cross country. Mick Williams was Kenilworth's star on the day for he not only finished in the spectacular time of 66.10 minutes in 6th position overall but also took the Men's Veterans 1st prize. Celia Mills, despite her gruelling fell race on Saturday (see above) lead the ladies home with an excellent run in 81.20 minutes, in 95th position overall. The other times are as follows:- LADIES Mary Joyce 93.12 Sarah Jackson 93.41 Wendy Hart 100.46 Pauline Dable 103.13 MEN Richard Steel 73.47 Stan Alexander 76.02 Tom Dable 81.31 Roy Hilton 95.10 Mick Morris 97.32 Bob Griffith 100.26

23/11/02 - Midland 7

Kenilworth Runner's Mick Williams travelled to Woolaton Park Nottingham on Saturday where he competed in the 7 mile cross country race together with 106 other runners. Woolaton Park, Nottingham is an ideal venue for a cross country race with acres of pleasant grounds around the old manor house in which to lay out an ideal course. This race comprised three equal laps with underfoot conditions muddy but overall ideal for cross country racing. Following his last week's success at Hartshill, Mick had another excellent run finishing the 7 miles in 40 minutes and 41 seconds which gave him a very creditable 41st position overall in a race with good quality runners involved.

24/11/02 - Benidorm Full and Half Marathons

Not content with just running all over the UK - Tom & Pauline Dable decided to spread their wings a little! Tom decided to tackle the full course whilst Pauline opted for the half. Tom finished in a time of 3 hours 16, whilst Pauline finished the shorted 13.1 mile course in 1:52.

24/11/02 - Winter League Race 2 - White Horse Gallop

On a very pleasant Sunday morning an excellent turn out of 25 members of Kenilworth Runners took part in the second race in the Winter Series of handicap road races. This time the venue was Balsall Common where the race, known in the Club as 'The White Horse Chase' so named as it starts outside the White Horse Public House and being four and half miles long tends to be a bit of a 'Chase'! The runners leave the White Horse and head for the traffic lights where they turn left and along the B4101 past Catchems Corner until the cross roads is reached. A left turn takes them along Hodgett's Lane to reach Carol Green and turn left again to climb slightly along Truggits Lane under the railway bridge at Berkswell Station until another left turn into Meeting House Lane. The whole length of this Lane is covered and with two right turns the finish line is reached, again outside the White Horse. After a very competitive race in which several runners exceeded their set handicap times Roland Smythe took the full 50 points with a blistering run and so preserved his overall lead. However, Roland will be aware that the impressive Stef Shillington is hot on his heals after yet another excellent run. They will both notice that last years overall winner, Tim Payne, is now in the reckoning and a number of runners have still to play their 'Jokers' which will double up their points tally. So it is all to play (or run) for.

The position after this second race is as follows:-

GROUP A: Mick Morris 98 points; Bob Griffith 94 points; Tim Payne 93 points

GROUP B: Stef Shillington 134 points; Sean Lonergan 96 points; Mike Cruickshank 90 points; Stan Alexander 90 points

GROUP C: Roland Smythe 150 points; Richard Steel 85 points; John McNally 83 points

The third race in this competitive series is a 5 mile race to be held on Sunday the 15th December 2002 starting near the junction in Charlcote by Charlcote Park at 11.00am.

24/11/02 - Clowne Half Marathon

Two Kenilworth Runners, Jane McNally and John Jones, travelled to Derbyshire to take part in the tough Clowne Half Marathon. Clowne is a small Town about 30 miles south east of Sheffield (By the way Clowne is pronounced ‘Cloon’ as Jane was rather huffily told by one of the locals!) and despite the name this was no fun event. The day was cold and rather foggy and the course was very hilly but Jane had a superb run finishing in 1 hour 54 minutes and 23 seconds with John coming in just behind her in a very creditable 2 hours and 3 minutes. For Jane this was made all the more pleasurable for she managed to set her personal best on a very hard course.
