05/09/02 - Summer League Race 7, Berkswell Bear.

The Last of the Club’s Summer Road Race League On a damp cloudy Thursday evening 32 members gathered in Berkswell to compete in the eighth and last of the Summer Races, called ‘The Berkswell Bear Race’ for the very obvious reason that it starts just in front of the Berkswell Bear Public House. This six mile race is probably one of the tougher of the series as it contains a number of steady inclines as well as one tough little climb at about 2 miles. The race starts by the Berkswell Bear and heads towards Coventry along Spencer’s Lane bearing left into Tanners’ Lane and up the hill. After the crest of the hill a sharp left turn takes it into Benton Green Lane and along into Broad Lane where it turns left and heads again towards Coventry until turning into Back Lane. After a steady climb up to Four Oaks a short downhill leads onto the Meridon Road and so with a left turn to the finish before the cross roads. Being the last of the races, in which all outstanding Jokers have to be played, the results are kept a close secret until the Club A.G.M. However it will take some effort to dislodge Matthew Dyer from the lead - BUT that could still be possible if one of his close challengers put in a special effort last Thursday evening.

15/09/02 - Coventry Way

Stef Shillington represented Kenilworth Runners last Sunday when he contested the annual 40 mile Coventry Way Walk. This very popular event starts and finishes at Meriden, passing through Kenilworth, Stoneleigh, Wolston, Brinklow, Bedworth, and Fillongley on its circular route around the City of Coventry. It was an early 6.00 am start for the more than 50 entrants which meant that the first few miles were walked in the dark, but by the time the leading walkers reached Kenilworth the day had dawned with almost perfect walking weather. As the day wore on however the long stretches of freshly ploughed fields took their toll and by the finish the leading group had been whittled down to just three. Stef shared the honour of first walker home with ex-Kenilworth Runner Bob Davis and Leamington walker Tom Mannion in the remarkable time of 10hrs 20mins.

22/09/02 - Uttoxeter Cross Country Race

Kenilworth Runner's Veteran member Mick Morris travelled to Uttoxeter to take part in the first Cross Country Race of the season. This was a day of racing for different age groups and the five mile race was one of 9 races for both men and ladies, with age ranges from 11 years to 69 (Mick Morris) who took part in an excellent days racing brilliantly organised by East Staffs Borough Council and Burton Athletic Club. The venue was picturesque Bramshall Park an ideal setting for Athletics and the course, comprising three laps, offered plenty of variety including steep slopes and three water obstacles per lap. These were quaintly named Beechers Brook, Valentines Brook and The Chair. The five mile race attracted about 70 runners and Mick finished in a reasonably satisfying 38 minutes and 36 seconds in a position that was not last but not far from it!

28/09/02 - The Cotswolds Challenge

Stef Shillington Takes First Place Again! This time on Saturday 28th September he rounded off a successful summer by contesting the Cotswold Challenge, a 25 mile event based on the village of Birdlip in Gloucestershire. This popular event attracted a field of 100 walkers and a number of runners. The route made full use of the many steep-sided valleys in the area, the high spot in both senses being Coopers Hill with its magnificent views of distant Breedon Hill and the north Cotswolds. Stef was delighted to be first walker home battling against some determined opposition in a time of 6hr 10min - breaking the all important 4mph barrier which is some achievement on this difficult terrain.

28/09/02 - King Alfred's Torment

Roland Smythe took time out from his holiday in Dorset to try out a seven mile muti terrain race around the Stourhead state near Mere in Somerset. In a field of just over 100, he finished 11th in a time of 51:40. If you have run the Grizzly then you will know that this part of the world is not flat! With two or three particularly steep climbs, this is definately not a race to try for a personal best.

28/09/02 - Midland Road Relays - Sutton Park

Kenilworth Runners were out in force at the Midland Road Relays held at Sutton Park. The Club were able to enter two Ladies and Men's teams on the day.
The Ladies event comprises four, 3.8 kilometre laps, whilst the men's six, 5.6 kilometre laps, around a pleasant course in this Birmingham Park. The men's A team had a total time of 2 hours 2 minutes and 37 seconds which gave them 24th position, just outside the position required to go forward to the National Finals. The B team finished in a total of 2.25.05 for 87th position, whilst the ladies A team finished in 1.16.54 in 38th position and the ladies B team in 1.31.18 in 50th position.
