01/06/02 - 24 Hour Track Race - Doncaster.

Rob Carr decided to undertake the annual 24 Track Race at Doncaster (and in the process raise money for Cancer Research UK) an Ultra that's in it's 17th year of running and usually attracts a competitive field, the aim of which is to cover as much distance as possible in the allocated time! He represented the club well completed the finished the race after 24 Hours with a distance of 102 miles and 1677 yards and placed a very credible 6th out of 27 runners (which currently also ranks him as 6th in the UK for 24 hour races in 2002) - on his debut Ultra. In the process he managed to raise over £1300 for Cancer Research UK.

03/06/02 - Boddington Golden Jubilee 10K.

Four members of Kenilworth Runners Club took part in the Jubilee Festivities at Boddington which is a village between Cheltenham and Tewksbury in Gloucestershire and in the process collected two prizes for their efforts. John Dagnan lead the Kenilworth team in with a splendid run of 39 minutes and 11 seconds to finish in 14th place overall and pick up the 2nd male over 50 veterans prize. He was followed by Gwyn Davies (40.02, 18th), this being his personal best for the distance. John McNally was next in (42.02, 27th) with Jane McNally (50.18, 65th) who also recording her personal best and taking the 2nd female over 35 veteran prize.

08/06/02 - Buxton Half Marathon.

This was the girls turn to show what they are made of as Mary Joyce, Jane McNally and Annette Robinson tackled probably the most difficult half in the country. Buxton is not reknowned for its flat rolling countryside - rather the opposite in fact. The only good bit of news was that for every climb there was a downhill to follow! Having received instructions from Mick Williams on Thursday about how to tackle it - he was optimistic that they would beat two hours - the girls nevertheless were undaunted. And a good job too! Mary was first back in 1:52, Jane - achieving a personal best of 2 hours and 18 seconds whilst Annette was just glad to get round in 2:32.

08/06/02 - Welsh Castles Relay.

Not your usual relay race this - a 211 mile relay from Caernarvon Castle to Cardiff Castle over 2 days makes it that bit different. However, not that it put our Pauline Dable off, she completed her leg - 12.4 miles from Drovers Arms to Brecon in driving rain and headwind all way - in a time of 1:41:12.

Pauline ran as one member of the Mewrcia Maidens team of runners who come from the Midlands. This relay race was held over the weekend and starts at Caernarvon Castle and finishes at Cardiff Castle and distance covered of 211 miles in two days.

09/06/02 - Midlands VetsTrack Championships.

Richard Elliot followed up his earlier efforts this year in Glasgow, where he won gold, silver and bronze medals, with another fine effort on the track at Solihull. This time he came second in the 800 metre race with a time of 2 minutes 13 seconds and then won the 1500 metre race in a time of 4 minutes 32 seconds, all in the over 50 age group.

09/06/02 - Coleshill Multi-terrain 5.

Tom and Pauline Dable tackled this multi-terrain race raun over five miles including the grounds of Maxstoke Castle. Tom clocked 36:58, Pauline 45:25

09/06/02 - Two Castles 10K.

In a field of over 900 entrants, Kenilworth acquitted themselves well with 3 in the top four. Mike Johnson continues to lead - finishing first, just ahead of Hans Smits and Lou Frondella. If only Mick Williams had got his number, Wayne wasn't on holiday and Martin was fit then we could have had an even better result! Hans and Lou were 1st and 2nd vets. Richard Steel finished 18th, and then there was a gap before Roland came in 41st. Overall we had 23 runners out of a feld of over 900 runners - the biggest field yet for this event. Making a welcome return to the "fold" were Clair Hobbs and Kristy Dable. Ladies cross country this year could be very interesting. Full results are below:

11/06/02 - East Midlands Grand Prix - Race 5, Weedon 10K.

The fifth race in the eight race East Midlands Grand Prix Road Race series was held at Weedon, just south of Daventry, in Northamptonshire. Five members of Kenilworth Runners took part in the race which is rated as the hardest in the series, a fact confirmed by all five after they had finished. The course can justly be claimed as picturesque for after four kilometres the road passes along a high plateau which gives glorious views over the Northamptonshire countryside. Not that many runners noticed this for the climb up to the heights was long and steep. Even after this climb the course was undulating with some long inclines but did provide a superb downhill finish, if that is, you forget the short painful climb just before the end. Despite the hardship of the course Kenilworth Runners acquitted themselves well being lead in by Roland Smythe who finished in 41 minutes 36 seconds in 81 st place overall. He was closely followed by Tom Dable (42.40, 104th), John Woodrow (47.51, 184th), Mick Morris (51.00, 240th) and Pauline Dable, showing no signs of her Welsh run, (52.06, 247th).

18/06/02 - East Midlands Grand Prix - Race 6, Banbury 5.

Five Kenilworth Runners travelled to Banbury to take part in this the sixth race of the series. Richard Elliot led the Runners home with a magnificent run to finish with a time of 28:08 for 24th position overall. He was followed by Roland Smythe, who had yet another good run, 32:28, (103rd) just edging out Tom Dable by two seconds, (104th). Pauline Dable was 276th with 39:22 and Mick Morris 301st with 40:56. Richard Elliots' run was good enough for second place in the over 50 category.

23/06/02 - Goyt Valley Challenge.

Stef Shillington swapped pace for endurance as he tackled the Goyt Valley Challenge, a daunting 26 mile cross country walk in the Peak District. The Race attracted 400 runners and walkers. Stef got off to a steady start and finished fifth among those opting to walk the event in a time of 6 hours and 20 minutes. Starting in Buxton, the race took in the landmarks including Axe Edge, Three Shires Heads, Shining Tor, Pyms's Chair and Windgatherer Rocks. It also included a notorious long climb to the mountain rescue post.

23/06/02 - Nuneaton 5.

Four runners tackled the inaugural Nuneaton 5 mile road race on Sunday, held in aid of the Mary Evans Hospice. John McNally was the first Runner back in 30:27 for 10th place overall and first over 45 male. Tom Dable was next in 33:15, with Jan McNally achieving a personal best of 38:39. Pauline Dable finished in 39:15 and gained first over 45 female prize.

25/06/02 - East Midlands Grand Prix - Race 7, Harborough 5.

Three club members travelled to Leicestershire to take part in the seventh of the eight East Midlands Grand Prix series of road races. This took place near the picturesque village of Foxton, noted for the magnificent series of canal locks, at the Prison that is located some mile or so to the east of the village. Conditions on the night were near perfect with a slight cooling breeze and clear weather. The 5 mile course has a nice downhill in the first mile to reach the village of Lubenham where it turns right along a leafy lane which despite its pleasant nature requires considerable effort to climb steadily until it turns right again into a lane past the famous Foxton Locks and thence back to the start near the Prison. Tom Dable lead the Kenilworth contingent with a fine run in 32 minutes and 44 seconds giving him 11th position in the over 50 age group and 102nd overall. He was followed by Mick Morris, who had his best run so far this year, finishing in 38 minutes and 59 seconds giving him 4th position in the over 65 age group and 234th overall. Pauline Dable also had a good run finishing in 39 minutes and 23 seconds giving her 5th position in the over 45 ladies group and 240th overall. There were 292 finishers in the race.

27/06/02 - Summer League Race 3, Wootton Wander.

29 members of Kenilworth Runners turned out for the third race in the Summer Series which is known as 'The Wootton Wander' as it passes through Leek Wootton Village. This four mile race started outside the Gauntlet Inn in Caesar Road, Kenilworth. The course took the runners down Caesar Road, left into Fishponds Road and then up Rounds Hill to turn right into Rouncil Lane and so, after half a mile, to the left turn into Woodcote Lane and Leek Wooton Village. After turning left onto the Coventry Road the runners passed the Caravan Park before climbing up the steady hill into Kenilworth and after a left turn into Rouncil Lane and then a right to go along Mortimer Road turning left at the Chip Shop and so back along Oaks Road to the finish outside the Gauntlet Inn. Zoe Greenhalf and Barbara Naronha took part in their first race and of this series. Each turned in good performances to take 50 & 49 points respectivly. Alex Preston and Julian Tombs played their jokers (this doubles their points tally on the night) and as a result have leapt to first place in their respective group. After this race there is little between the top three in each group so the series is wide open. After three races the positions are as follows:-

Group A: Alex Preston 141; Pauline Dable 127; Bob Griffiths 127

Group B: Julian Tombs 138; Roger Wilkes 129; Mike Cruickshank 115

Group C: Richard Steel 128: Tom Dable 112: Mick Williams 107

The fourth race in the series takes place on the 4th July 2002, starting outside the Red Lion Inn in Hunningham.

29/06/02 - Malvern 35 Mile Marathon

Stef Shillington took to the hills again, this time to tackle the popular Malvern Midsummer Marathon. Whilst called a Marathon this cross country event is 35 mile long and tougher than the standard Marathon but in compensation it covers some of the most picturesque countryside in England. The start is in Great Malvern at the Wytche Institute and the route goes directly to the top of Worcestershire Beacon and then to the imposing North Hill. It leaves the northern end of Malverns at this point and goes on up to the River Teme at Lulsey at the northern point of the route. It returns via Cradley to Ledbury over Oyster Hill and in doing so passes through some exquisite woodland. Leaving Ledbury the route passes Eastnor Castle to the most southern end of the Malverns. 29 miles have been completed at this point but the last 6 miles are the toughest - Chase End Hill, Ragged Hill, Midsummer Hill, Herefordshire Beacon , British Camp and on to the finish at the Institute. A day of magnificent views and a little excitement - being chased by a bull! Stef was pleased to finish 5th out of a field of 150, in a time of 9hrs 35mins.

30/06/02 - Race for Life 5K - Coventry War Memorial Park

A race for the ladies - some 2,000 in fact turned up for this 5K race. Amongst them were 8 members of Kenilworth Runners - 7 running and 1 walking. Leading the Ladies home in a time of 27:18 were Pam and Helen Wilkes. Following on were Barbara Noronha 33:30; Ann Lewis 34: 22; Lynne Groves and Yvonne Shillington 35:45; Sue Kincaid 40:11. For the walkers, Carol Smythe completed the two lap course in 49:59. The two lap course was never going to offer a fast time as by the time the runners were on their second lap, they were catching up the walkers still on their first. The ladies were ably supported by Robin Groves, Gerry Lewis, Roland Smythe and Sam Kincaid - who presented his wife Sue with a bunch of flowers at the finish!

Pam and Helen Wilkes lead the way   Carol Smythe takes the easier route   All smiles at the end!
