02/05/02 The Charlton-on-Otmoor 4 mile race

Pauline and Tom Dable both run in this 4 mile (actually it was 4 miles and 31 yards) race in Oxfordshire which is part of the Oxford Motivation series of races. On a flat course in near ideal conditions they both had good runs with Tom finishing in 25 minutes 50 seconds (25.50) and Pauline in 31.18.

04/05/02 - Chelmsley Wood Grand Prix 5mMile race.

Not daunted by their excursion to Oxford town days earlier Pauline and Tom Dable took on this 5 mile race which is also part of a series of races. Again on a flat course Tom finished in a splendid 32.46 with Pauline in 39.50.

04/05/02 Rhayader Mountain Trail 28 mile race

Further a field Stef Shillington took on this daunting challenge walk in Wales. The course circumnavigates the Elan Valley Reservoirs on high, wide trackless mountainsides, climbing some 6,500 feet in all, and is set in stunningly beautiful country. These events are attended by a small but dedicated group of athletes and less than 100 took part, however the stiff task, the determined competitors, and the long distance did not bother Stef who came in the first of the walkers in 7 hours and 45 minutes.

07/05/02 - East Midlands Grand Prix 1 - Silverstone Grand Prix 10K.

Five club members travelled to Northamptonshire to take part in the first race of the East Midlands Grand Prix race series. There was a fantastic field in this evening race with 957 runners actually finishing. The race is a two lap event run over the motor race track circuit and is very flat and conducive to fast running. Mick Williams lead the Kenilworth team in with a storming run to finish in 34 minutes 59 seconds and 39th position. He was followed by Tom Dable (40.11, 201st), Roland Smythe (40.54, 234th), John Woodrow (46.57, 535th) and Pauline Dable (48.46, 642nd).

08/05/02 - Kingsbury Classic Multi terrain 10K.

Four members of the club travelled to Kingsbury Park in Birmingham to run in this attractive multi terrain race. This two lap 10 kilometre course runs alongside the lakes and down the river to provide a most enjoyable run on a pleasant evening. There were 120 finishers in the race. Mick Williams again lead the Kenilworth team with yet another blistering run finishing in 35 minutes and 24 seconds and gaining 3rd position. He was followed by Tom Dable (40.50, 24th), Roger Wilkes (45.08, 57th) and Pauline Dable (50.22, 90th). All the times were excellent for one race but for Mick, Tom and Pauline this was their third race in three days, a remarkable performance. Roger Wilkes set a new course record for the over sixty category demolishing the old one by nearly three minutes and taking second over sixty position.

11/05/02 - The Iknield Way Multi Terrain Half Marathon.

Three Kenilworth Runners attended this tough race which was held at Chinnor a village in Oxfordshire which lies on the flanks of the Chiltern Hills. On a bright and warm evening Mike Johnson lead the group in with yet another spectacular run finishing in first position (again) in 1 hour, sixteen minutes and 47 seconds. His run was the fastest time that for some years. He was followed by Tom Dable (1.35.35, 20th) and Pauline Dable (2.07.05).

11/05/02 - Playtex Moon Walk.

Carol Smythe travelled to London to join many thousands of other walkers in this marathon distance (26.2 miles) walk. The event starts in the evening and continues throughout the night. The figure of eight course travels through Battersea Park and along the Embankment. A strong walker Carol finished the race in the remarkable time of 7 hours and 30 minutes.

12/05/02 - Halesowen Multi-terrain 10.

Two of Kenilworth Runners ladies attended this arduous race in Halesowen. Celia Mills lead them in with a splendid run in 1 hour and 24 minutes. She was followed by Mary Joyce who also had a great run finishing in 1 hour and 31 minutes.

15/05/02 - East Midlands Grand Prix 2 - Rugby 6

Six club members travelled to Rugby on Tuesday evening to take part in the second race of the East Midlands Grand Prix race series. 280 runners finished the undulating course of whom 63 were lady runners. As in many previous races Kenilworth Runners ladies were the stars of the show with Jo Everatt taking the first Lady Veterans prize with a superb run finishing in 41 minutes 59 seconds and in 140th runner overall. Again Mick Williams was the first Kenilworth Runner to finish with his trade mark powerful run in 34 minutes 31 seconds and 25th position and 4th male veteran. He was followed by Roland Smythe (39.54, 102nd), Tom Dable (40.20, 113th), Pauline Dable (47.55, 226th) and Jane McNally (50.58, 249th).

16/05/02 - Summer League 1 - Five Ways Frolic.

Thursday evening brought the first race in the highly competitive Kenilworth Runners Summer Handicap League. As with the Winter League this is based upon runners previous performances from which a handicap rating is established and points are awarded in accordance with each runners performance against their handicap. A bonus system allows each runner to choose a race in which they might perform well and the points gained on the evening are doubled. This is the 'Joker' system. The first race is known to club members as 'The Five Ways Frolic' as the course starts just along Case Lane a short distance from the 'Five Ways' traffic Island on the A4141, near Hatton. The course heads back to the Island before turning sharp right into Five Ways Road along which it proceeds until turning right into Quarry Lane and head towards Mousley End until another right turn past Mousley Hill Farm and, as the name implies, climbs sharply up to Case Lane and so back to the start.

36 members, over a third of the membership, took part on the evening and Stan Alexander took maximum points with a storming run. The other groups positions are as follows:-

A Group Alex Preston 47 points

B Group Martin Carter 49 points

C Group Richard Steel 45 points

With 7 more races to go the competition looks tough. The next race will be held on the Thursday 30th May next starting at 7.30 pm in the Abbey Fields Car Park.

Roger Homes leads the way home, ahead of Lynn, Roy & Robin   While Mike Cahill finds it hard going to keep ahead of Will and Matthew   Whereas Mike & Ken try a bit of synchronised running

Mick, finds time to wave to the camera, while Lou tries to take him on the outside   Roland - in front of Tom for a change - but booked a blower shortly after this shot was taken, and lost to him again

22/05/02 - East Midlands Grand Prix 3 - Corby 5

It's only 55 miles to Corby! Still, 4 intrepid runners made it over to the Rockingham Speedway circuit - a somewhat new stadium on the outskirts of Corby. The course was a two lap affair twisting and turning on itself and open to a fierce headwind on the start and finishing staight. This was the first time that this circuit had been used, and although not as famous as Silverstone - or as scenic - it may catch on as it gives the runners the chance to run on a traffic free road. There were 392 finishers in the race which proves what an attraction this series of races is. Tom Dable lead the Kenilworth group finishing in the splendid time of 31 minutes and 54 seconds and in 110th position overall. He was followed closely by Roland Smythe (32.13, 118th), Pauline Dable (39.40, 309th) and Mick Morris (41.08, 336th). Pauline came third in the Ladies over 50 group against very strong opposition.

27/05/02 - Cotswolds Hilly 100.

Two teams entered this years event - making a welcome return after last years cancellation due to foot and mouth restrictions.
The B-team were the first to start - at 6 o'clock in the morning - with Richard Greenhalf leading them off for a time of 72:25. The A-team started an hour later, with Roland Smythe trying to emulate Lou Frondella's time of 58 minutes - but failing miserably - 67:45. At this point in the day the weather was ideal - dry and cool with hardly a cloud in the sky. However as the early legs progressed, the weather started to turn so by mid morning the showers were following the runners round.
It was not until legs 6 & 7 that the heavy showers began to hamper them and the change over at the Swan in Moreton in Marsh was more suitable for ducks. Still for those of us in the Swan - we didn't care - we could look out of the windows! Leg 10 probably got the worst of the weather - and for Roger Homes stepping in for Simon Vine at the last moment - the expression drowned rat comes to mind.

Not one of our better efforts from the A team - Roland taking a wrong turn on leg 1, Captain Mick telling Tom Dable to take the wrong direction and Lou Frondella missing his start by 5 minutes. Still, mustn't grumble - it is still a great day out and we will put it right next year!

Performance of the day went to Mike Johnson - who had given up the chance of a barbeque in Manchester - to make his debut on leg 4. His time of 57:55 has got to be amongst the quickest ever for that leg and it helped move the team up from last place to 3rd.The A team clawed back the hours advantage that the B-team had by the middle of leg 5 and from then on managed to pull away quite easily - finishing some 2 hours 20 ahead at the end. For the record, Leamington A won in a time of 10:15:40.

30/05/02 - Summer League 2 - The Figure of Eight

The Summer Handicap League Race Thursday evening brought the second race in the highly competitive Kenilworth Runners Summer Handicap League.
This race is known to club members as ’The Figure of eight’ from its twisting route arround the old part of Kenilworth. The start is by the bus stop at the top of Abbey Fields from where it goes downhill to the traffic lights and then left up High Street to Malthouse Lane. The course then goes to Beehive Hill, Clinton Lane and so back to High Street and then up Fieldgate Lane to Malthouse Lane and so back to the start via Forest Road. Quite an easy course to get lost on! 36 members took part on the evening both running and in the essential marshalling of the race.
Jane McNally was the star of the race for in her first Summer League Race she beat her handicap by 1 minute and 55 seconds to take the maximum 50 points on the evening. Lou Frondella, Mick Williams, Richard Steel and Julian Tombs also beat their handicaps.

As a result of the second race the positions are as follows:-

GROUP A Pauline Dable 83, Bob Griffiths 82, Pam Wilkes 76

GROUP B Martin Carter 94, Roger Wilkes 84, Mick Cruickshank 82, Steve Lee 82

GROUP C Richard Steel 92, Martin Dorrill 90, Lou Frondella 80

With 6 more races to go the competition is getting fierce. The next race will be held on the Thursday 27th June 2002 and starts outside the Gauntlet Public House in Ceaser Road. It is a four mile run to Leek Wooton and back.
