Andy Biss and Martin Carter were the clubs repesentatives at this race with Andy completing the course in 2:46 just three minutes behind Martin.

03/03/02 Daffodil Run Half Marathon.

Annette Robinson was our sole representative at this race - missed off the calender last year because of foot and mouth. In preparation for the trip over to Holland at the end of the month and treating this as a guide to her progress, Annette clocked a time of just under two hours.

10/03/02 Grizzly - Joker in the Pack.

Six runners spent Sunday running The Grizzly. This is a very tough race starting in Seaton running along a shingle beach before turning onto the promenade to start one of the many steep climbs out of Seaton. Once leaving Seaton the race goes over multiterain being knee deep in either water or thick gooey mud at one stage, taking in Branscombe and Beer following the cliff path at times and with a Force 9 Gale blowing it made it even more difficult to run across, dropping back to the beach at Branscombe another shingle run, another climb out at times to steep to contemplate running, then the climb up Stairway to Heaven before dropping back into Beer for the final climb to the cliff path before dropping back for the final run along the shingle beach to the finish. A total of somewhere between 18 and 20 miles completed by:

Mick Williams 11th 2.08.25; Stan Alexander 255th 2.44.18; Celia Mills 316th 2.48.24; Kerry Waine 371st 2.52.25; Roger Wilkes 396th 2.53.58; Robert Griffiths 1164th 3.52.57;

A total of 1306 runners completed the race a very commendable effort by these runners.

10/03/02 Stef Shillington - intrepid explorer!

On 3rd March Kenilworth Runners Stef Shillington contested a new challenge walk in the Chilterns called ‘The Wendover Gap‘. A field of less than a hundred completed the muddy, undulating and scenic 26 mile event, but after an eighteen month lay-off Stef was pleased to finish in 6hrs 25mins an excellent effort that called for relentless application given the difficult conditions and which put him in a prestigious position among the first five finishers. Undaunted by this effort, last Saturday, Stef travelled north to Derbyshire to compete in a race called ‘The Grindleford Gallop’. This 21 mile event is marked by steep climbs and descents in the picturesque Chatsworth Park area. Over a hundred runners contested the event, made particularly challenging by the atrocious weather. Again Stef had a good event and finished the race in an impressive 3hrs 52mins, an excellent time for such a difficult event.

17/03/02 Winter League Race 8 - Shillington's Shally.

On Sunday morning a group of Kenilworth Runners travelled to Norton Lindsey to take part in the 8th and final event in the Winter Road Race Handicap League. The course for this six mile race starts and ends outside The New Inn in the village and proceeds to Snitterfied where after two sharp right hand turns the course follows the mainly uphill road through Wolverton and to the cross roads near Langley Green before turning right to return to Norton Lindsey. Being the last event of the series the final positions are withheld until the Club’s annual general meeting in April, however on the day Richard Steel was the first past the post with a splendid run in 40 minutes and 38 seconds. He was followed by Mike Cruickshank in 43.26 and Stef Shillington in 43.57. Roger Wilkes was the only runner to beat his handicap time with a most impressive run on a difficult course and so earned the full 50 points.

What a fine bunch of runners! Note Tim Payne's one step ahead already!   Mike Cruickshank leads Stef at mile 1   Tony Knowles at mile 2

Stef now leads Mike & Roger at mile 4   Julian, fast on the heels of Stef at mile 4   Is this the smile of a winner?

17/03/02 Ashby 20.

After yesterdays race, Mick Williams and Lou Frondella tackled this traditional pre London Marathon race ably assisted by John McNally, and in doing so took third place in the team event. The course was altered this year due to the construction of the Ashby by pass which meant that instead of the one 20 mile circuit, it was broken down into two. Not that it stopped our intrepid duo of Mick & Lou who completed the course together in 2:11 for 37th= place.(Mick would actually say he beat Lou in the run in - but we know Mick). John McNally, warming up for this weekends trip to Holland finished in a very creditable 2:14. Also running were Terry Dyer (2:29) & Andy Biss (2:45)

17/03/02 Bath Half Marathon

Further away in the picturesque City of Bath Gwyn Davies was running in the prestigious Bath Half Marathon. The race comprises two laps which are generally flat and conducive to fast running. Gwyn had an impressive run finishing in the time of 1 hour 29 minutes.

23/03/02 - Richard Elliot - A National Hero.

Richard Elliot became the first member of the Kenilworth Runners Club to hold a National Title when, on the 17th March 2002 at Glasgow Kelvin Hall indoor track, he came first in the over 50 veterans 3000 metre race, clocking the magnificent time of 9 minutes and 50 seconds.

On the previous day he came second in the 1500 metre race with a time of 4 minutes and 35 seconds and was only denied the first place by 0.7 of a second. He added the third of his trio of medals by winning the 3rd place in the 800 metre race which again was a very close finish with barely a second between the first three runners. Not satisfied with this superb achievement on Saturday 23rd March 2002 he went to Berry Hill, Mansfield to run in the National Veterans Cross Country Championships and on a fast 10 kilometre course took 15th place in a select field of 150 runners with a storming run of 37 minutes and 13 seconds

24/03/02 - City Pier City.

The Motley Crew   It's catch the motor bike at the start of the 10K   What, Derby 1-0 up already!
