03/02/02 Dewsbury 10K.

Wayne Oakes and Lisa Rodda took on the challenge of the Dewsbury 10 kilometre Classic road race. In a field of 954 finishers, the conditions for the race which is run over a flat and normally fast course were far from ideal with strong winds preventing fast times. Non the less both had excellent runs with Wayne Oakes completing the race with a strong run in an official time of 36:28 for 101st place. Lisa Rodda in her first major race fro some time, finished in 41:23 with an equally impressive run for 289th place.

03/02/02 Bowline

Four Runners made it over to Bradgate Park in Leicestershire for this annual 12 and a half mile, Class B fell race. It certainly didn't disappoint, although Celia was a bit downhearted at the lack of hills! Conditions were windy to say the least and as for the mud.....well it could have been worse. The race was restricted to 275 runners, although in the end only 241 actually ran. This was a great pity as there was a spot prize of 8 cans of beer for the runner who came in 261st! We were rather hoping that Mick Morris might obliged us, but he was too quick.

Mick Williams seems to like this event as his 17th place earned him 2nd V40 spot although his time of 1:31:52 was slower than last year. Roland Smythe managed to complete the course this time for 78th place and a time of 1:44:26 (12th in the V45 category). Celia Mills did remarkably well considering there were no hills (!) for 148th place in a time of 1:54:57 (7th F35). Mick Morris, hanging back deliberately for the beer, but failing miserably, finished in 2:11:46.

A great race and if you want to find out more about it, visit the website: Charnwood

10/02/02 Winter League Race 6 - Preston Bagot Bash.

On one of our better winter mornings, 12 runners turned out for the sixth race in the series - but where are the rest of you? The course had to be changed slightly due to the recent rains which made running through the ford on part of the circuit too muddy. As a result the race was cut down to four miles instead of five. Paul Dable made a welcome return by charging round the course in some 22 minutes!. Not bad seeing as he represented Warwickshire in the County Championships yesterday for the U20's - finishing 86th, and he has just come back from 3 months in Kenya training with John Mutai amongst others. The closest most of us got to him was at the start. Tim Payne's position at the top could be under threat as it looks as if the marshals may get 50 points - and Mick Morris was one of them. Tim appeared a worried man at the start - can his chance of glory be snatched away from him at the last moment? Gerry Lewis was also making a return and was even brave enough to sport his Welsh Rugby Union hat - good job Mike Cahill didn't turn up, but events of last Sunday were to prove too much for him as after a mile he was forced to retire and make the lonely way back to the start. So, the scores on the doors.............

Leader of the pack - Tim Payne 298 points

GROUP A Mick Morris 292; Pam Wilkes 251; Bob Griffiths 226

GROUP B Stef Shillington 273; Roger Wilkes 223; Gerry Lewis 175

GROUP C Richard Steel 206; Roland Smythe 203; Gary Bradbury 70

Paul Dable finds the going tough after yesterday   Tim grimaces - as he ponders, can he retain top position?

17/02/02 Dursley Dozen.

Three members of the club travelled to Dursley in Gloucestershire to compete in the gruelling 12 mile cross country race call-1ed the 'Dursley Dozen'. This is a very hard race with plenty of steep climbs up and down the picturesque Cotswolds with one climb so steep that the organisers provide a rope to help the runners get up the climb. None the less all three runners did well with Stan Alexander leading them in in 1hour 43 minutes 50 seconds. He was closely followed by Lady runner Celia Mills in 1 hour 48 minutes 5 seconds with John Jones making up the team with a resolute 2 hours 37 minutes.

23/02/02 Belvoir Challenge.

11 members travelled up the M1 to the village of Harby in Leicestershire where they took part in the annual Belvoir Challenge race.

This is a very tough event and competitors can chose between two distances, 15 miles or the full marathon distance of 26 miles. Competitors can walk or run the event and on the day two runners elected to run the 15 miles, three walked this distance whilst two ran the marathon distance with four walking it.

The vale of Belvoir is one of the outstanding and beautiful areas of countryside in the UK but on the day proved very strenuous as many sections were very muddy. The first two miles pass along the Grantham Canal where the mud was ankle deep in places. After leaving the village of Plungar the route of the event climbs up onto the Belvoir Escarpment where competitors were hit by a blizzard as they crossed towards Belvoir Castle. Here the 15 mile route headed towards Eaton and Stathem and so back to Harby whilst the marathon route passed through several Leicestershire villages before returning to Harby.

Stan Alexander and Celia Mills ran the 15 mile distance in the magnificent time of 2 hours and 55 minutes. Ted Hatwood, Pam and Helen Wilkes walked this distance in a steady 5 hours and 19 minutes whilst John Jones and Bridget Welsh ran the marathon distance in an excellent 7 hours and 15 minutes followed by Robin Groves, Roger Wilkes, Joyce Hatwood and Fiona Stone walking the same distance in 8 hours and 47 minutes. In trying conditions these were all very commendable times.

24/02/02 Winter League Race 7 Barford Super Belter.

On Sunday morning, under low cloudy skies, the club held the 7th of their Winter Handicap Series of road races.

This time the venue was Barford and a new course of 6 miles. 13 members turned out for the event which starts and ends in Barford. The course starts in Wasperton Lane and follows this pleasant byroad until it turns left by the crematorium and so onto the Banbury Road to turn left again and over the M40 to reach Hareway Lane and over the M40 again and back to Barford and end in Wasperton Lane.

Tim Payne held onto his top position with a strong run which keeps him 6 points ahead of Mick Morris and with only one race left in the series it will take some effort to overhaul him. There is tough battle taking place for the title of Group B leader with Roger Wilkes overtaking Stef Shillington but with everything to play for in the last race.

Leading positions:

Group A:- Mick Morris 297; Pam Wilkes 266; Bob Griffiths 232.

Group B:- Roger Wilkes 287; Stef Shillington 280; Gerry Lewis 189.

Group C:- Richard Steel 222; Roland Smythe 203; Gary Bradbury 70.
