02/09/01 Wolverhampton Marathon

Pride of place must go to Simon Vine who ran in the Wolverhampton Marathon and brought back a veterans prize. On Sunday Simon Vine completed the grueling 26.2 mile Wolverhampton Marathon in the remarkable time of 2hrs. 47 mins. 46 secs for 4th place overall which was only 8 minutes behind the winner. Simons outstanding run not only put Kenilworth Runners name in amongst some of the top clubs in the country but earned him a veterans prize. There were 243 finishers on this difficult course which taxes the best runners and Simon’s performance was outstanding and will rate high in the clubs records.

05/09/01 Race against Stratford - 5.5 miles Hampton Lucy Lurker

On the evening of Wednesday 5th September a large group of Kenilworth and Stratford upon Avon Running Club members held their annual competition with a 5.5 mile race at Charlcote. The course chosen for the event was the picturesque route from Charlcote through Hampton Lucy to Hatton Bank Lane and back to Charlcote via Hampton Lucy. The winners are based upon a points system and Stratford won the Ladies race and Kenilworth won the Men's. For Kenilworth Runners Mike Johnson was first to finish in a splendid 30.15 minutes followed by Hans Smit (30.38 mins) and Martin Dorrill (30.52 mins). In the Ladies race Jo Everitt and Lisa Rodda finished joint first in 38.26 minutes followed by Pamela Wilkes (45.29 mins).

08/09/01 Birchfield 5 Mile

On Saturday evening 8th September three members of the club took part in a race at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham.

The Birchfield Harriers 5 mile event is a three lap race around the park adjacent to Alexander Stadium and is best described as ’undulating’. Conditions were windy making the going tough. None the less the Kenilworth Runners put in good performances with Wayne Oakes finishing in 28.56 minutes in 11th position, Roland Smythe in 30.43 minutes for 22nd position and Mark Caddick in 38:17 minutes for 45 place out of a field of 63.

09/09/01 Flintshire 10K

On Sunday 9th September Matthew Dyer, whose father Terry also runs for the club, showed a fine turn of speed when he went to Wales to run in the hilly Flintshire 10 kilometre road race. He smashed his previous best time by 6 minutes and completed the distance in an impressive 40.55 minutes and in 52nd position in a field of 400.

16/09/01 Lancaster & Morecombe Half Marathon

Kenilworth Runners were represented in the Lancaster & Morecombe Half on Sunday when Liam Berney ran a very creditable 1:41. Having moved up to Gargrave in North Yorkshire it is reassuring to know that the green; white and black of Kenilworth is still being worn.....or is it that there isn't a running club in Gargrave? Well done Liam. If I was Mike Cahill I would start to look over my shoulder......he's coming back

29/09/01 Summer League Presentations

Kenilworth Cricket Club was the venue for Kenilworth Runners to present the winners of the various categories in their Summer League competition with their awards and reveal the closest kept secret of all - the overall winner of this very competitive series of road races.

On Saturday evening last members were honoured by the presence of the Lady Mayor, Felicity Bunker, who kindly presented the prizes. The overall winner of the series, Roland Smythe, came from a difficult start to the year caused by an injury to his leg but quietly progressed up the league and burst into poll position in the eighth and final race of the series with a blistering run at Honiley and earning 46 points which were doubled by his cunning use of the Joker. He won the league with 297 points just beating his nearest challengers.

The other category winners were:- A Group Bob Griffiths 258 points Pam Wilkes 252 points Mick Morris 232 points B Group Mike Cahill 281 points John Woodrow 272 points Roger Wilkes 288 points C Group Martin Dorrill 290 points Mick Williams 271 points Richard Steel 244 points

At this presentation a further award was made to the club member who, in the view of the Chairman, contributed most to the club in the past twelve months. With complete agreement from members this was awarded to Roger Wilkes for his sterling services running the league and in particular for his tremendous hard work in organising the first Kenilworth Runners Half Marathon to be held next Sunday.

29/09/01 Midland 6 Stage Relays

In the curtain raiser for the forth coming cross country season, a team of six runners made it over to Sutton Park for the Midland 6 stage 5.5K lap relay race. However, the overall time for the event of 2:06:31 was only 2 seconds faster than last year and three runners ran slower than last year. This prompted us to think that the course was in fact slightly longer - at 5.8K.

That being said, Mike Johnson ran a storming first leg to finish 14th out of 103 teams that started in a time of 19:10 - only 1 minute and 40 seconds behind leg winner John Mutai. The conditions were now brilliant sunshine and a total contrast to the downpour earlier on in the day. Next off was Martin Dorrill who returned 20:33 and 27th place. Wayne Oakes followed with a time of 20:53, and held onto 27th place, whilst fourth leg man, Mick Williams came in in 21:20 and 29th place. The fifth and sixth runners were Richard Steel and Roland Smythe, who after last weeks battle over the Nuneaton 10 in which Roland won resumed their normal roles today. Richard came home in 21:49 and 32nd place, whilst Roland lost a further 4 places for his 22:42. If you compare this year with last you can see that Wayne, Richard and Roland all returned slower times this year - or is it we are just getting older?

30/09/01 Nottingham Half Marathon

In contrast to yesterdays glorious weather, this was a very grey and wet day. The start was held up by 25 five minutes to allow late arrivals to get into the parking area. Not that this spoilt the occasion for the runners who made the 60 odd mile up the motorway to Nottingham.

The field for the half marathon was just over 6,000 competitors with just over 1,300 in the full marathon. In an altered course from previous years - Wollaton Park was excluded - meaning a detour around the edge - it was Mick Williams who led the runners back in 1:24. Next was Roland Smythe in 1:27, followed by Andy Groves 1:34; Robb Carr, running in his first half, 1:38; Andy Biss 1:42 and Gerry Lewis 1:52. Annette Robinson, Pete and Pat Southall were also running but no information was available at the time of writing.
