05/07/01 - Race 5 Summer League - Stoneleigh Shuffle.

On Thursday evening last Kenilworth Runners held the fifth race of their Summer Series of races.

Again a course record was beaten, this time by visiting runner Mike Johnson, who set a new record by finishing in 28.08 minutes.

The race is known to club members as “The Stoneleigh Shuffle” but Mike’s run was anything but a “Shuffle” as he powered smoothly round this undulating five mile course. The race starts in Spring Lane and heads out along Whitemoor Road to Leyes Lane and then, after a short but painful little hill in Glasshouse Lane, turns right into Crewe Lane which brings blessed relief until the Stoneleigh Road is reached. After a mile along this another hill is reached in Rocky Lane which leads the runners to Birches Lane and so into Warwick Road to Waverley Road and so to the end near the stop sign in Priory Road. This is a handicap race so that all abilities (and ages) are catered for.

There are normally three separate starts to the race with the A group of runners being followed after 5 minutes by the medium paced runners of B group followed again after 5 minutes by the fast runners of C group. There was a good turn out on the night with 25 runners and marshals.

The league positions after Race 5 are as follows:- Overall Leader at Race 5 Lou Frondella 232 points (He got the 50 pints for best handicap) A group leader Bob Griffiths 213 points B group leader Barry Elkington 204 points C group leader Martin Dorrill 211 .

Lou Frondella and Roland Smythe sharing a joke at the start but it was Lou who had the last laugh as, in the absence of the previous leader Mick Williams, he leapt into the overall lead. But will he still be overall leader after race 8? Kenilworth Runners next race will be held on Thursday 19th July next and the start is by the phone booth in the village of Beausale. Anybody who fancies a run is very welcome to come along and join in the race for as you see all abilities are catered for in our races and competitive racing combined with fun is our objective. The race starts at 7.30 pm.

18/07/01 - Hungerton 7 Mile - Leicester.

On Wednesday evening last Mick Morris travelled to Hungerton a village north of Leicester and ran in the seven mile race there. The race is notorious for its hills starting in the village with an immediate climb until a short undulating road is reached and a steep down hill followed by an even steeper uphill. After a fairly flat section the steep hill theme is repeated until the sharp downhill into the village and the finish line. Mick Morris finished in 54.54 minutes for the seven miles.

19/07/01 - Race 6 Summer League - Beausale Bandit.

On Thursday evening last Kenilworth Runners held the sixth race of their Summer Series. This was a four mile pursuit race where each runner starts according to a carefully calculated handicap time and, in theory at least, all runners should end the race together.

The race is known to club members as “The Beausale Bandit”. The race started by the telephone box in Beausale and headed out towards Hatton before turning right towards and through Haseley Green and then to Haseley Knob and so to return to Beausale. On an excellent night for running 26 runners and marshals took part in this race and most of the runners managed to beat their predicted time.

Setting new records has become a habit in this years series and this time it was Martin Dorrill who powered around the four miles for a new course record of 22.19 minutes and by doing so leapt into the overall lead in the series. The ladies were also in excellent form with Pam Wilkes speeding around the course to take the prize of the 50 points for the first runner to cross the finish line as well as putting in a stern challenge for A group honours.

The league positions after Race 6 are as follows:- Overall Leader at Race 6 is Martin Dorrill with 238 points A group leader Bob Griffiths 217 points followed by Mick Morris 214 points and Pam Wilkes 210 points B group leader Roger Wilkes 221 points followed by Barry Elkington 217 points and Gwyn Davies 202 points C group leader Lou Frondella 232 points followed by Roland Smythe 228 points and Mick Williams 210 points

With only two races to go it is even more difficult to predict the eventual winner of the series as now ten runners are covered by a mere 30 points and with many still to play their “Joker”, which doubles the points for a race, anything can happen!

28-29/07/01 Le Touquet Races - Kenilworth Runners win team prize in Course des Oyats

Just to prove that it wasn't a figment of everybody's imagination - we made it   And if you still don't believe it......the beach at Le Touquet   The bus - yes it got us there without a hitch - if you exclude the Jones's and their attempts to sabotage us!! - Just don't mention passports and money

Jane & Annette taking in the scenery on lap two of the 10K race.   John Jones also taking it easy....   John Woodrow - leading a not inconsiderable number of runners on the second lap

Martin Dorrill looking cool and good enough for 65th place   Roland Smythe trying hard to catch Martin, but failing miserably!   Stan Alexander trying hard to make up ground

Tim Payne stands proud on the finishing rostrum - because it was there - shortly afterwards he was carried away by officials kicking and screaming!   And so to the beach and Course Des Oyats......   Martin, head down, surges towards the finish.

Roland, still trying to catch Martin and still failing miserably   Having escaped the officials, Tim comes in off the beach, only just behind John J and John W.   Stan tries to summon once last ounce of energy in the final push to the finish.

John Jones, head down makes one last stroll to the finish.....   John Woodrow gives it his all in the final 100 metres.   And finally, all good things must come to an end...but wait a minute, where's Roland - pass over picture to find out!

A team of Kenilworth Runners visited the French sea side resort of Le Touquet some 30 kilometres south of Boulogne last weekend. They took part in two races the first being a 10 kilometre race held last Saturday evening the second a 8.7 kilometre race held last Sunday morning. Nine runners took part in Saturday evening’s 10K road race. The course was composed of two flat laps run through the pleasant French countryside around Le Touquet. It proved rather tougher than had been expected due to the weather which was in the high 80's and not really conducive to running or for obtaining personal bests, nevertheless, in a field of over 1,200 runners, Martin Dorrill finished 62nd in a time of 36:26 confirming his recent excellent form. As this race was a qualifying race for the French Championships, Martin’s performance was outstanding. There was a good crowd to cheer on the runners and following Martin was Roland Smythe who finished the course in 40:20 closely followed by Gwyn Davies 42:05; Stan Alexander 44:03; John Woodrow 48:25; John Jones 50:01; Tim Payne 55:02, Annette Robinson 61:17 and Jane McNally 61:19.

On Sunday morning the race moved to the seaside for the 8.7 kilometre Sand Dune race. This was again a two lap course, the difference being it was run amongst the soft sand and the dunes of the beach. In a much smaller field than the 10K race, Martin Dorrill was again first home in a time of 33:33 for a top twenty finish. Roland Smythe, still not able to catch him up, was 40th in a time of 36: 13 Four other club members completed this tough challenge, John Woodrow 42.20; Stan Alexander 42:25; John Jones 47:00 and Tim Payne 47:12. Despite their efforts the evening before these runners still completed a very difficult race with good times. It was only after the race when it was announced over the PA System that the Runners realised they had won the team trophy.

It was an unexpected bonus and rounded off an excellent weekends racing. After the heady exploits and success in France it is back to the Summer League schedule again on Thursday evening with the 7th race of the series and with the burning question. Can anybody catch Martin Dorrill?
