05/09/2000 - Kenilworth lose to Stratford in annual Club Race!

Kenilworth have finally been beaten by Stratford in the Club race after several years of victories. But it was close. More details will follow when I can bear to write it up!

12/09/2000 - Mixed fortunes in Nuneaton.

Kenilworth Runners had to field an understrengh side for the fifth race in the Warwickshire Road Race Series at Wolvey today. However, when you consider that the race was also host to the Warwickshire 10 mile championship, the Midland Vets 10 mile Championship and a Leicester League Road Race we did remarkably well to finish fourth overall in the team event.

With Martin Dorrill, Sam Kincaid, Matthew Kingston, Simon Vine and Richard Elliot all missing through injury or illness the Club still put in a good performance.

The race at Wolvey was a two lap undulating course that proved very deceptive. Wayne, Mick and Roland could all have done better, but I suppose you cannot always perform to your expectations - e.g. Simon Lessing in todays triathlon. That being said, Lou Frondella still manages to confound the critics and put in a storming run and break the hour in 59:15. That time was good enough to give him 25 place out of a field of just under 300. He was just behind Wayne Oakes who completed the course in 58:48 and 23rd place. Richard Steel came in next in a time of 60:59 (42nd); followed by Mick Williams 61:43 (50th); John McNally 64:30 (86th); Roland Smythe 68:42 (142nd); Angus McIntyre - preparing for the New York Marathon - 70:53 (175th); Richard Greenhalf 71:57 (186th); John Woodrow 77:53 (246th) and Mick Morris 82:10 (270th).

(Many thanks also goes to Jane McNally for taking the photographs)

24/09/2000 - Lou smashes 1:20 barrier at today's Nottingham Half Marathon.

Lou Frondella ran a superbly tactical race in today's half marathon at Nottingham by not only beating the 1:20 barrier, but also setting himself up for a personal best of 1:17:38. Not even Mick Williams, who normally keeps place with him could keep up with Lou's blistering pace. A total of 8 runners completed in the half marathon with two going the full distance.

For those of us who tackled the half, the rain held off, but for those doing the marathon, the heavens opened some three hours into the race and resulted in all athletes getting thoroughly soaked.

Apart from Lou's excellent time, there were also good performances from John McNally, running his best time for three years, and from Roger Wilkes, who, making a return after a back injury forced him to take a back seat, ran a steady race and was thoroughly pleased with his time. Perhaps the only minus point in an otherwise well organised race was the positioning of the mile markers. Mile marker 9 was on the wrong side of the road, whilst all of the runners would have run a mile in a world record time between 10 and 11 - the signs being less than half a mile apart! From 12 to the finish was also short. Towards the end of the race, this is the last thing you need.

Perhaps a few other people will have noticed the errors and bent the organisers ears. So I suppose we will all just have to back again next year to see if they are in the right place!

30/09/2000 - Runners finish 59th in Midlands Relays

Kenilworth Runners could only manage to field one team at last weeks 6 stage relay over at Sutton Park in Birmingham. Despite this the team still managed to finish the race in 59th place, out of 93 teams competing, in a time of 2 hours 6 minutes and 33 seconds - only 22 minutes behind the eventual winners - Birchfield Harriers.

Wayne Oakes led the team off on the first of the 5.5 kilometre legs in a time of 19:34 finishing a creditable 49th. Gary Bradbury took over, but suffering from a heavy cold could only manage 23:31 and the team dropped to 82nd place. Richard Steele was the next runner and moved the team up to 73rd place with a time of 20:32. Roland Smythe was next off and despite a time of 21:46, still managed to claw back another two places. Simon Vine continued the improvement with a time of 20:48 and a finish position of 67th and it was left to Roger Homes on the anchor leg to pull the team up to the final position of 59th in a time of 20:22.
