Kenilworth Runners enjoyed a cracking weekend at Tywyn on the west coast of Wales by regaining the Team trophy they last
won in 1998. With the first three counting, the Runners were led home by Mick Williams - 1:34:32; Martin Dorrill - 1:34:47 (Incidentally
the exact same time he achieved last year); and Lou Frondella - making his debut - 1:39:12. These times were good enough for finishing places
24th; 27th and 56th out of a field of over 1,000 runners. Overall an excellent performance and coupled with the success of capturing the Warwickshire
Half Marathon Championship at Stratford earlier in the year, this winters cross country leagues should be very exciting. Not to be outdone,
Roland Smythe, making his third appearance after a gap of 8 years also beat the train in a time of 1:44:15 to finish in 108th place and beat
the train by 56 seconds. (As a useless piece of information for you statisticians out there - his previous two times were 1991 - 1:44:53,
169th place and missed the train by 40 seconds; 1992 - 1:43:40, 145th place and beat the train by 1 minute 25 seconds. Consistent if nothing
else)
Altogether 10 Runners completed the 14.1 mile course on a very dry and hot day. The sheep track this year was particularly "hairy"
with passing opportunities few and far between and even after we had come off this, the couple of miles following were also difficult with
the hard rutted ground playing havoc with your ankles. Terry Dyer - also making his debut - found the going a bit too tough at the beginning
and was forced to ease back and eventually finished in a time of 1:49 exactly and 168 place. Other finishers were Stan Alexander, who turned up
at the campsite at midnight and had to pitch his tent aided only by the light of this headlamps, in 1:56:27 (284th); Gwyn Davies 1:59:35 (330th);
Celia Mills 2:00:38 (342nd and 21st lady overall); Kerry Waine 2:03:01 (378th) and Andy Biss 2:03:03 (379th).
Our only representative in the 10K event was Daniel Biss who finished in 72nd place out of
208 in a time of 51:36 and also managed to beat
the train in the process. Next year he is eligible
for the Senior race - so then we will find out
what he is really made of!

| After a gap of 8 years, Roland finds it doesn't get any easier - but it still feels good to beat the train. |
