07/07/2000 Temple Trot - Summer league

Terry Dyer played a shrewd joker last night to take a firm grip of this years summer league. With the weather conditions being absolutely terrible, it was more like running in mid winter than mid summer. So the 5th race in the Summer League now has a new leader in the guise of Terry Dyer. Once again the course has changed from previous years to ensure that it measures an even distance. It is now 5 miles as opposed to 4.7 - which is a bit of a blow to Lou, who ran a superb race to take the honours in a time of 28:53, and who thought that he had set a course record. (Actually Steve Jones held the old course record in a time of 25:25 set in 1989 and even allowing for the extra ¼ mile, it still wouldn't have been quick enough.) The long awaited "tussle" of the evening between Terry Dyer and Roland Smythe failed to materialise as Roland was unable to keep up with Terry's explosive first mile and finished some 18 seconds down. It will just have to wait until the next race to see if Roland can narrow the 4-1 deficit. The winner of the handicap was Jane McNally who managed to beat her predicted time by some 2 minutes and 5 seconds. For her efforts she picks up the 50 points. Denise Cheetham also did well, beating her time by 1 minute 45 seconds. Tactical race of the evening went to Matthew Kingston - who ran a slowish race in order to establish a rather "slow" handicap. (Watch this space for who picks up 50 points in the next race!!).

The next race is the White Horse Gallop on the 20th July, so Terry has at least two weeks to enjoy that top slot. Hot on his heels are - for the A's Mick Morris with 254 points - just two points behind Terry. In the B's it is Gwyn Davies on 219 points whilst the C's sees Mick Williams on top with 239 points.

09/07/2000 Kenilworth Runners welcome Tara Brendle from New York Road Runners.

The power of the web came into being this week when Tara, who is on a two week conference at Warwick University, surfed the net and came up with our name. She is hoping to compete in this autumn's Philadelphia marathon and so wanted to train with a local club whilst over here. When we received her e-mail we said that we would be more than happy for her to train with us. Having arrived at the University on Saturday mid afternoon, it did not give her much time to acclimatize to the time difference before joining us on Sunday morning at 8 o'clock for a steady 10 mile run. Not that it made much difference as she soon settled in and found the experience thoroughly enjoyable. The off road sections were particularly interesting, as being based in New York there is not much of an opportunity to go off road - Central Park doesn't count!

She said that she would like to join us during the week - when we go off road for the whole session - so we'll find out then if she stills enjoys it as much.

20/07/2000 White Horse Gallop

Terry Dyer lost top place tonight to Mick Williams. But it wasn't through lack of effort; no unfortunately, he had to retire after a mile with a pulled hamstring. Not that it should keep him out for too long, and he hopes to be fully recovered before the next race in two weeks time. So the sixth race ends up with yet another leader of the pack. Not that he was given an easy race - Martin Dorrill pushed him all the way and was unfortunate to lose out by just a second. In fact Mick was only one of 4 runners to beat their time on a glorious evening for running. In some respects it was a bit too perfect - especially in the last mile when the stillness seemed to take away any breath of wind. The other runners to beat their predict time were - Helen Wilkes, who collected her second consecutive 50 points, Stan Alexander - who arrived on time for once - and Roger Clay, who playing his joker managed to double his 48 points up to 96. Once again the course was considerably changed from previous occasions, and the mile across the fields could have caused some confusion if it had not been for some well positioned arrows put out by Roger Wilkes. As a result no one got lost. Unfortunately with Terry dropping out, it meant that the awaited tussle between Roland Smythe and Terry has had to be postponed until the next race (I reckon I've sussed him out myself....) Gerry Lewis was granted special permission to complete the course before anyone else as he reckoned he had to be back at Warwick University by 8 o'clock as there was a leaving party for his wife Anne, who will be taking up a new post over in Birmingham. As it happened he was a little late as his time was a modest 30:20 over the 4 mile course.

So where does that leave us now after round 6?

Leader of the pack is Mick Williams with 269 points. The A's is led by Mick Morris 268 points, B's Gwyn Davies 232 points and the C's Terry Dyer with 261 points. The next race at Burton Green on the 3rd August is a pursuit race and so there is still everything to play for. Don't forget the last race of the summer league is now on the 10th September - the Beausale Bandit.

Finally Tara Brindle returned to New York over the weekend, but not before she took part in Thursdays race and was presented with a Club running vest. She thoroughly enjoyed her sessions with the Club and was very impressed by the friendliness shown towards her. She will remember us in dispatches!
