14/05/2000 - Hilly Challenge

For the crowd that had come to Abbey Fields on a glorious Sunday morning for the Fun Run and Hilly Challenge, they were to witness a stunning display of fluent and effortless running from one Julius Kimtai. With John Mutai being unable to run this year - he is back in Nairobi, where his wife is expecting their first child - it was left to fellow Kenyan athlete Julius to challenge for the record. In the relatively small field of just over 100 runners, Julius wasted no time in establishing himself at the front. The 3 lap course over Abbey fields is considered one of the toughest off road 10K races in the Midlands, yet when the leader completed the first lap in 10 minutes 39 seconds, you knew you were watching something special. With the second lap being only slightly slower, the distance between first and second place was already a staggering 4 minutes. At the start of the third lap, Julius was already lapping the slower runners and as he made his way down the hill to the finish for the last time, he had increased his lead to just under 6 minutes. He received a tremendous ovation from the crowd as he sped down the finishing straight, breaking John Mutai's 1997 record by 37 seconds. The crowd were still buzzing when second place man Gary Payne proceeded down the finishing straight, just ahead of Dave Clark. Now it was almost as if there was another race going on as the runners came over the finish line with only a few seconds rather than minutes between them.

Apart from the winning three there were also notable performances from Graham Patton who finished in 4th place and 1st overall in the Mens over 55 category. Lynne Sherrin was the first lady back, whilst Chris Johnson was 1st Lady back in the Ladies over 50 category. Mick Williams was the first male Kenilworth runner home, whilst Pauline Dable was the first female Kenilworth runner.

26/05/2000 - Hampton Lucy Lurker

The first 50 points went to Martin Carter, who doubled them up to 100 by playing his joker. Karen Carter, not wanting to be outdone, picked up 48 points, whilst sandwiched in the middle was Gerry Lewis with 49. This opening race of the summer series was a pursuit race - a format that seems well appreciated by everyone .....except the timekeepers. This time proved no exception, but everyone was counted out and everyone counted back in! Good to see so many new faces. You will have to do another race to qualify for a handicap time, and then we can see how good you really are! The next race is another 5 miler - at the Running Club, this Thursday night - 1st June - at 7:30 - The Stoneleigh Shuffle.

28/05/2000 - Hilly 100

Three Kenilworth teams completed this years Hilly 100 relay race around the Cotswolds on Saturday with the A team covering the 100 miles in 10 hours 31 minutes and 31 seconds - just two minutes slower than last years time. However, the course this year was 0.4 of a mile longer than last year due to changes on leg 5, so this years time was almost spot on to last year. The B team completed the course in 12 hours, 10 minutes and 47 seconds, whilst the C team made it round in 13 hours 38 minutes and 47 seconds. The weather conditions for the day could not have been worse. Whilst it may have started off sunny, by the time we had got to mid morning, the heavens opened and the wind was blowing a gale. So much so that on the exposed parts of the course, the runners were running head long into driving rain and wind. In order for the teams to finish at about the same time, all three of them started off at different times. The C team were first off at 5 o'clock in the morning, the B team were an hour later whilst the A team started at 7 o'clock. Unfortunately even the best laid plans are prone to error and by the end of leg 5 all the teams changed over in the space of a minute! Still it made for an exciting start to leg 6. Because of the inclement weather it made following the runners quite hazardous - especially along some of the narrow country lanes. It would definitely not have suited the mini bus.

The highlight of the day is normally reserved for the end of leg 7 which finishes outside the Swan Pub in Moreton in Marsh. On this occasion, because of the weather and the fact that they had stopped serving food at two o'clock meant that it was not so much of a highlight this year. Apart from this slight hiccup, the rest of the day passed off fairly uneventful, apart from when the cricket match at the end got little fraught when a batsman laid the bowler out cold with a well aimed punch. The ensuing melee of ambulances and a police car made for an interesting end to a rather cold and wet day.

Still, all runners did very well and to take part in this unique race is well worth it. For the record, the A-Team finished in 3rd position overall, whilst the B's finished in 4th out of the B teams and the C's last in their section.

anybody has the results from previous years, could you let me have a copy of them as I want to try and build up a hall of fame of the best times for each of the legs over the years.
