- Leyland Millenium Marathon
John Jones has joined an exclusive athletics club!
The Kenilworth Runners long distance specialist went to Lancashire on Monday and completed his 100 career marathon, finishing the Leyland event
in 3 hours and 56 minutes.
John has reached the century in less than 12 years,
returning to athletics in 1987 aftera lay off, and a year later clocking his first marathon, the London in 3:20. Twelve months later he went
back and ran a superb 2:28 time which remains his personal best.
Since then he has completed the classic distance at venues all over the country, including Stratford, Snowdon and Nottingham - his home town.
This years London will be his seventh. He has the Taunton race before that and will possibly get in a first timer abroad. had a very good first 16 miles at Leyland
he said but struggled over the last 10. Knowing that this was number 100 ensured that there was no way I was going to pull out.
The achievement is intrinsically recognised by a medal and by a trophy which he will keep until passing it on to the next
athlete who reaches the marathon century.
Two other Runners completed at Leyland - John Woodrow recorded 3:53 for the marathon, whilst Sam Kincaid, opting for the
half in his debut at the event, completed the course in 1:21 to finish 14th.
