Rugby - Nearly 10 Print E-mail

Three members headed to Barby to take part in the Rugby 'Nearly 10'. With Draycote Water unavailable, Rugby & Northampton Running Club reverted to a modified version of the classic 10 mile course used for many years prior to Draycote. With a new start location at Barby, the course was officially 15km (Around 9.3 miles), which offered many competitors a sure-fire personal best over a seldom run distance.

After avoiding an early morning deluge and impeccably observing a moment's silence on Remembrance Sunday, the field enjoyed mostly agreeable conditions with watery Autumn sunshine and a cooling breeze. The course was gently downhill for the first half of the race but contained a sting in the tail as the final four kilometres was nearly all uphill, proving a stern test of stamina and will. There was an unexpected challenge for the first 50 or so finishers as they were diverted at 7km by a Policeman to avoid a Remembrance Sunday parade. This added approximately an extra 400m to the course and a steep hill to boot, although it did not affect finishing positions.

Matthew Kingston-Lee was first Kenilworth Runner home in 13th position, his time of 57:42 a new best over 15(.4)km. Tom Dable ran a fine race enjoying a return to form coming home in 70:31. Wife Pauline Dable battled a heavy cold as she finished in a fine 83:43.
