London - Ballbuster Duathlon Print E-mail

Kenilworth Runner Matthew Kingston-Lee made his multi-discipline race debut when he competed in the quaintly named Ballbuster Duathlon.

Held at the popular haunt for London cyclists Box Hill, the run-bike-run event took in five laps of a grueling eight mile circuit, with two laps of running coming each side of a three lap bike section. The sting in each lap's tail was a 1.5 mile climb up Box Hill, infamous amongst cyclists for its resemblance to an alpine climb, with no less than four hairpins to negotiate.

On a cold and cloudy, but dry morning, Matthew fought valiantly against far more seasoned multi-eventers to finish 65th overall in a field of over 350 competitors. With splits of 52:52, 1:23:53 and 57:09 for the three sections (Which included a lengthy transition period for the second and third splits) he agreed with the organisers that the event was tough as a marathon as he struggled to walk for the next couple of days!
