Kenilworth Runners members, Sue Taylor and Justin Lindsey Noble, travelled north to the Derbyshire Spa Town of Buxton to run in the High Peak 40 race, a popular running and walking event. This is a very tough and challenging event which takes a circular route from Buxton via the Goyt Valley, Mam Tor, Castleton and Tideswell Dale, and with 2000 metres of ascent, this is no place for the faint hearted. The race started at 8 am with around 150 runners and walkers taking part, in perfect running conditions, blue skies with low lying mist and an anticipated top temperature of 17°C. The route quickly reached open moor land and beautiful views of Fernilee reservoir with the view getting better and better as the route climbed up a stony track and along Rushup Edge. At 20 miles the route descended from Mam Tor into Castleton and the ascent up Cave Dale. The route then dropped down into Tideswell at 26 miles and further down into Monsal Dale. The last 10 miles are very hard as they included a 3 mile long uphill drag of road section to Chelmorton and then a short but vicious descent and re-ascent across the aptly named Deep Dale. The event finished where it started in Buxton. On such a tough course and against top opponents, Sue Taylor showed her class coming 3rd lady in 7 hours 19 minutes, in 28th position overall. On his first long distance race, Justin Lindsey Noble excelled and finished in 7 hours 39 minutes finishing in 37th position overall. There were 121 finishers. |
