Race Report

Ben Jones and Sue Harrison were the winners of the thirteenth Kenilworth Half Marathon on Sunday 3rd September 2013, an event which saw 717 competitors complete the 13.1 mile race, which incorporates
the Warwickshire Half Marathon Championships and is the 9th race in the Warwickshire Road Race League.
The picturesque route, run on quiet rural roads around Kenilworth is not without its challenges. The course sees runners tackling steady
undulations over the first half of the race, until they reach the highest point at mile eight at Beausale. Some respite is offered after this, but only for a mile or so until participants begin climbing again in the final stages of the race at miles 10 and 12, as the route bring them back into to Kenilworth to the race headquarters at Castle Farm.

Once again the event received unanimous positive feedback on popular running forums such as Runners World and across social media, helped by the good weather conditions, friendly marshalls and volunteers and well stocked water stations along the route.

In the men’s race, Ben Jones of Godiva Harriers opened up an early lead. He kept up a strong pace throughout the race, which saw him crossing the line in first place over five minutes ahead of his rivals in a course record time of 1:08:54. He was followed by Kenilworth’s Andrew Siggers who also ran a fairly lonely race, finishing in a new personal best time of 1:14:06, three minutes ahead of Paul Little from Droitwich AC who finished in 1:17:06.

The ladies race was much closer than the men’s and was won by Sue Harrison, leading the victorious Leamington C&AC ladies team. Sue’s time of 1:20:32 was just 22 seconds ahead of Hannah Howard of Eastleigh AC who crossed the line in 1:20:54, setting herself a new Half Marathon PB despite being deep in training ahead of the forthcoming Amsterdam Marathon. The third lady home was the evergreen Kate Wright from Stratford AC in 1:23:01. Kenilworth’s Nardia Poole came home in 5th place in a time of 1:27:16. The team races were both incredibly close with Knowle and Dorridge AC being squeezed out of both races by just two points, narrowly beaten by Lichfield’s men and Leamington C&AC’s ladies.

A fantastic reception greeted all finishers at Castle Farm Sports Centre with spectators lining the home straight to cheer everyone across the line. This year saw finishers being awarded with a high-vis commemorative long sleeve technical t-shirt in additional to a well-stocked goody bag. As in previous years, runners then retired to the Sports Hall to enjoy a fantastic selection of cakes and refreshments laid on by club members, before prizes were awarded.

The Kenilworth Half Marathon could not take place without the hard work of volunteers who help organise the event, the kind assistance of our title sponsor Towergate Insurance and our race partners Brooks Running, Tudor Physiotherapy, Joe Richards Greengrocer & Fruiterer, High5 Sports Nutrition, Warwick Sports, YourRaceDay Photography and Warwick District Council.

Club Chairman and Race Director Peter Bryan writes:

“Thankfully the thirteenth running of our race was blessed with perfect conditions & a new course record.  Huge thanks to all of our willing & enthusiastic volunteers who help create such  a great atmosphere around the event.  Also to our sponsors who contribute their energy & their money towards giving the runners real value for their entry fee.  Kenilworth Runners, in conjunction with Joe Richards Greengrocer who supplied the generous goody bags & bottled water will be making a contribution to Myton Hospice, from the proceeds of the race, together with further donations to local good causes. This year's race was a sell-out - we'll be opening entries early in 2014, so make a note to enter early & we'll see some of you next year!”
