Victory for Chataway and Fowler in Record Breaking Kenilworth Half Marathon

Matthew Chataway and Eleanor Fowler were the winners of the twelfth Kenilworth Half Marathon on Sunday 2 September 2012, an event which saw a record 713 competitors complete the 13.1 mile race.  The race, which incorporated the Warwickshire Half Marathon Championships and was the ninth race of the Warwickshire Road Race League, has received a deluge of unanimously positive feedback on the UK’s largest running website runnersworld.co.uk indicating that the sell out 2012 edition was the best yet for the Kenilworth Runners hosted event.

Blessed with lovely spectating weather, if not marginally warmer than ideal for the runners, the picturesque route run on quiet rural roads around Kenilworth presents an honest test for the competitors. The undulating course climbs steadily over the first half of the race, with only a few gentle descents until it reaches its highest point at mile eight at Beausale. The runners have a mile or so respite with a steady descent until two punishing final climbs at ten and twelve miles tire already weary legs as runners make their way back into Kenilworth.

Entrants were able for the first time this year to collect their race numbers and timing chips on the Saturday before the event. Once the remainder of the entrants had collected theirs on race day, warmed up, perhaps enjoyed a coffee and said farewell to their loved ones, it was time for the small matter of tackling the half marathon which lay ahead.

Following a well received and informative pre-race safety brief, the race was soon underway with the usual charge from Castle Farm Sports Centre by enthusiastic runners, all guided by the lead car provided by the Kenilworth Half Marathon’s title sponsors Johnsons Hyundai of Coventry.

The men's race saw a strategic battle unfold with runners hesitant to take the lead of the group from eventual winner Matthew Chataway. By five miles the lead group had been whittled down to five and by eight miles just the three podium finishers were locked in a tense battle for victory. Chataway lead the group from start to finish, surviving a handful of failed attempts by second placed finisher Richard Simkiss of Kenilworth Runners to break away. Matthew eased away in the closing stages to finish in 1:13:34, fourteen seconds clear of Richard and twenty one seconds ahead of third placed Damian Carr of Coventry Godiva Harriers. Simkiss was crowned Warwickshire County Half Marathon Champion for the third year in succession ahead of his team mate Phil McCorquodale, who ran a massive new personal best, knocking nearly five minutes from his previous half marathon effort and finishing fourth overall. A successful day for the race hosts Kenilworth Runners was cemented with seventh position overall for Phil Gould and tenth position for Andrew Siggers securing the team competition.

In the ladies race Eleanor Fowler of Nuneaton Harriers ran 1:22:42 to add the Warwickshire Country Half Marathon crown to the 10K and 5 mile championships she won earlier this summer.  She finished six minutes clear of second placed Myshola Kirkham of Coventry Godiva Harriers, a previous winner of the Kenilworth Half Marathon. Third placed Amanda Deavey of Northbrook AC struggled with stomach cramps  during the race but soldiered on to narrowly beat Carolyn Wilkinson of Spa Striders who is returning to form following a spell away from competitive running following childbirth.

A fantastic reception awaited all competitors as they returned to Castle Farm Sports Centre for the race finish with spectators lining both sides of the course to cheer everyone across the finish line. Finishers were awarded a high-vis commemorative long sleeve technical running top to see them training safely through the winter months in addition to a well-deserved goody bag. Runners then retired to the Sports Hall to enjoy a  fantastic selection of cakes and other refreshments on sale before the events prizes were awarded.

The Kenilworth Half Marathon, hosted by Kenilworth Runners could not take place without the volunteers who help to organise the event and marshal the race, and the kind assistance of our title sponsor Johnsons Hyundai of Coventry and our race partners: Brooks; Joe Richards Fruiterer & Greengrocer; Warwick Sports; yourraceday.co.uk; runbritain.com; Tudor Physiotherapy; and Spa Remedial.

The race has in past years raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities and good causes, many of them local to Kenilworth and the surrounding region. Proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to Warwickshire & Northampton Air Ambulance (WNAA) and Myton Hospice.Selected Results:
