A new daytime running group is to start in Kenilworth in the New Year, to help support those resolving to become more active in 2012. The group, which will meet outside The Almanack, will be led by experienced runners Joan Mason and Arthur Smith who have both recently become qualified group leaders. The first session is on Wednesday 4 January from 9.30-10.30am, with runners encouraged to stay for a coffee afterwards !
Joan says "We want to offer a supportive, group environment for those who find it more convenient to run during the daytime. The group will be suitable for all standards of runners, as well as those looking to take up the sport for the very first time." Joan is available on 07957 872473 for more information or you can speak to Arthur on 07972 761621.
Sessions will be just £2 a session, with no joining fee and the plan will be to get runners initially up to a 5K distance, then potentially up to 10K. There is no commitment to attend every session, just turn up & run when you can. This will act as a stepping stone for anyone entering the Two Castles who will need a bit of help with their training, or those who just want to run for pleasure or to improve their fitness. Those who are more experienced will also be welcome to come along.
The group will be registered under the Run England scheme as soon as possible.
In the spring, Kenilworth Runners will be offering a '10 weeks to 10K' course to provide additional support to aspiring Two Castles runners.

Over 170 guests attended Kenilworth Runners Twenty Fifth Anniversary Party, held at The Warwickshire Golf Club in Leek Wootton. Club members past and present enjoyed a fantastic four course meal before listening to a captivating talk from local athletics legend David Moorcroft.
Before guests danced the night away, David Moorcroft awarded life memberships to two of the twelve founding members of the club Mike Cahill and Stef Shillington. He also presented two awards created in memory of a fellow founding member of the club Mick Morris, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Michael Johnson won the Mick Morris Memorial Shield for the best age graded performance of the year and Clive Pearce won the Mick Morris Memorial Trophy for winning the 2011 Club League series of races.
The party marked the culmination of a year of celebratory events for the popular running club, which has grown from its humble beginnings to become one of the most successful clubs in the local area.

It was mission accomplished and in some style as Kenilworth Runners dominated the 2011 Warwickshire Road Race League (WRRL). The Men’s Team scored the maximum possible score (120) in the senior and veterans categories to win the team competition; the senior men filled the top three in the individual competition and took first place in three of the five age categories. The ladies team played their part in a most successful campaign with three individual third place finishes in their respective age groups.
At the end of 2010, Kenilworth Runners’ Men’s Captain Phil Gould stated his intention to make the 2011 WRRL a priority for 2011. The nine race series began in April with the Regency 10k and ended in October with the Rugby 10 mile race. The league incorporated the cream of local road races, including the phenomenally popular Two Castles 10k race, and the longest race in the league - the Kenilworth Half Marathon. The shortest race was the BRAT 5km race held in Birmingham in July. In both team and individual competitions, it was the best six results from the nine races which counted.
Richard Simkiss was the overall league champion; clocking two victories and four second positions to crown another excellent season. He was followed by team mate Phil Gould and Connor Carson, who also dominated the V40 category with a perfect score of six victories. Mick Williams was second in the V50 category and the club showed its strength across the generations with Tom Dable winning the V60 category and Arthur Smith taking the V70 title. Moreover, Andrew Holbrook finished third in the V40 category and Clive Pearce had an excellent run of results to finish fourth in the same age group.
The ladies team also had a solid campaign with Ros Matthews finishing seventh overall and third in the LV35 category; Sarah Stein finished third in the Senior category and Pauline Dable was third in the LV55 age group.
There were also numerous examples of fine performances from members of Kenilworth Runners who were unable to compete in enough races to be placed highly in the overall league standings, including top ten race finishes from Andrew Siggers, Stuart Hopkins, Matthew Kingston-Lee and Jim Sawle.
Attentions of the club are now focused on the cross country season and in particular the Birmingham League Cross Country which commences this coming weekend at Leamington. The men are hoping to improve on their twelfth position in Division One in 2010/11 and the ladies are looking to improve on a promising campaign last year in the Midlands League.

Saturday 14 May 2011 will see the first running of the Kenilworth Festival 10k. The demanding off-road race held at Abbey Fields, hosted by Kenilworth Runners for many years as the Kenilworth Hilly Challenge, will, as in 2010, coincide with the Kenilworth Festival - a week long series of events in and around the Kenilworth area from 7-14 May.
The Festival 10k will start at 10am and for the first time there will be a team relay for those not wanting to take on the demands of the full 10km race. Following the Festival 10k, at 12pm there will be a Schools Challenge for year 5 and 6 students and at 12:30pm a family fun run. The latter two events are approximately one mile long.
Affiliated members can enter the Festival 10k for £7 (£9 for non-affiliated entrants) and entries to the Schools Challenge and family fun run are just £2. Relay team entries (A team has three members) are £12. Finishers of the Festival 10k and the Schools Challenge will receive a medal.
The Kenilworth Runners website has more information on the Festival 10k and runners wishing to enter any of the events can do so via the Kenilworth Runners website: http://www.kenilworthrunners.co.uk/races/kenilworth-festival-races.html
