Runners who decided to enter this years race late were to be disappointed for the “Entries Closed” notice appeared some time ago on the Kenilworth Runners Web Site. More prudent applicants who entered early were able to join 93 entrants for the Marathon (26.2 miles) or for the really tough competitors, 114 who opted for the full 35 miles, which to put it into prospective, is the distance from Coventry to Wolverhampton! They were rewarded for their determination by a great course around Draycote Reservoir and a magnificent day of sun and calm conditions - ideal for such tough events.
Roger Wilkes race organiser greeted and started the runners under ideal conditions for the race, being able to start the events from two different start points one on the upper road the other on the lower road was quite spectacular.
The Marathon is a new innovation to the Draycote races and involves, only! 5 laps of the course around Draycote Water whereas the traditional 35 mile event means another two laps making 7 in all. The course as usual followed the boundary road around the reservoir which offers many excellent views over the water and the local countryside, views that all those who completed the races were very familiar with when they finished.
It was the ladies who were the top stars on the day, with no less than TWO, Adela Salt and Fiona Davies, breaking the course record, by over ten minutes! Two truly excellent runs.
