Road Race Rankings 2010 - Marathon Print E-mail
The marathon has seen something of a resurgence after a quiet 2009 amongst the men and it saw a battle royal between the two leading protagonists of the year. For the ladies it was another quiet year after a flurry of efforts in 2009.

2008 Top 3 Runners: 1st Stuart Hopkins 2:48:19; 2nd Matthew Kingston-Lee 2:54:11; 3rd Martin Dorrill 2:55:49.
2009 Top 3 Runners: 1st Richard Simkiss 2:52:38; 2nd Stuart Hopkins 2:58:43; 3rd Connor Carson 2:59:26.

As I predicted when producing last year’s stats, there was indeed a number of runners who sought to run sub 2:50 in 2010. That two of them wound up knocking on the doors of a sub 2:40 shows the strength of improvements amongst our runners. Richard was the faster of the two at London, but Stuart returned in September with a sensational performance at Nottingham to claim the fastest marathon time by just twelve seconds. This run must vie for run of the year with Rich’s half time at Birmingham, especially as Nottingham is not the fastest marathon course and it must’ve been a lonely run to third position compared to running at London.   My biggest regret of the year was undoubtedly not going sub 2:50 at London – that 2:55 came on the back of a tortuous journey back from Shanghai courtesy of that pesky Icelandic volcano. Connor Carson was our fourth runner to break three hours this year and his efforts are notable for two reasons: 1. He ran the most marathons in 2010 – four - and 2. He ran the fastest time in costume when he clocked 3:22 at London dressed as a mosquito!

Women Marathon
Position Rank Name Time Where When
1 1 Ros Matthews 4:15:30 Llanberris (Snowdonia) 30 October 2010
2 2 Joan Mason 4:38:52 London 25 April 2010

2008 Top 2 Runners: 1st Jacqueline Hobson 4:26:06; 2nd Joan Mason 4:26:09.
2009 Top 3 Runners: 1st Ros Matthews 3:41:54; 2 Gill Tugman 3:58:30; 3rd Mandy Crust 4:02:07. #

Just two efforts by our ladies but both excellent runs – Ros couldn’t match her times of 2009 but fought an injury plagued build up and conquered one of the toughest marathons on the calendar.  Joan continued to impress with her efforts and enthusiasm, posting a time that would please women less than half her age.

WMA / WAVA (Using tables formulated by Howard Grubb)
Marathon
Position Name Grade
1 Stuart Hopkins 77.01%
2 Richard Simkiss 76.92%
3 Martin Belcher 72.06%
4 Connor Carson 71.43%
5 Matthew Kingston-Lee 71.35%
6 Pete Bryan 68.70%
7 Joan Mason 68.28%
8 Mark Hall 66.99%
9 Andrew Holbrook 65.25%
10 Sean Mitchell 64.41%
11 Marcus Leek 63.08%
12 Andreas Ruhnke 55.13%
13 Ros Matthews 53.36%
14 Anton Raath 53.23%
15 Rod Goodwin 53.06%
16 Frank Walsh 52.32%
17 Martin Broomfield 39.37%
Behind the top two it is Martin Belcher who moves the most dramatically from our ninth fastest runner to our third best age graded performer. Joan Mason was our best lady runner age graded setting the seventh pest performance. Note too that for those chasing high WAVA grades the marathon may not provide good value for money – despite clearly excellent performances by many athletes, grades in this event are typically lower than for other distances.
